Rich Eisen is a wonderful podcast to listen, if ya'll are not. He makes a LOT of valid points here

The last point he makes is the best one...having this system in place provides the real-time correction, and lets face it, embarrassment to the HPU. That should drive the behavior we want, umps to recognize their own blind spots and work to correct them.

I do wonder if Angel would have called the next two pitches strikes after being humiliated on the first pitch but he's so arrogantly defiant I could see him being the lone HPU who wouldn't change. If you created a terrible umpire in the lab I'm not sure you could come up with a "better one" than Hernandez.

Only 3 challenges per game is criminally low though. Unless you get to keep the challenge if you are right.

Frankly just replace them all with robos

Unfortunately Whitely tore three tendons during a celebratory high 5 after getting the news

I have an interesting conversation at lunch. A Bregman had discussed with someone who provides a service to them about flying them out to whoever they end up. That means they're not expecting to stay in Houston (already in AZ).

Truly the best situation Whitley could have regarding the call up. Expectations for our bullpen are pretty low so can't be worse than other guys.

Of he does even mediocre, he sticks around for a while.

I'm happy for the kid to get a shot finally...

Not really shocking. Going to be an interesting next 18 months with so many core guys facing free agency and a bloated payroll.

I don't really see a situation where he stays unless he accept a short term deal. His production isn't good enough for the 10 year he wants and we won't give him a long term.

I thought the dude really battled. Got some tough breaks, in the 2nd inning, had a HBP, but he gutted it out.

I didn't get to see much of his first game, but he was consistently getting ahead of the Atlanta hitters and getting them to two strikes. As is pretty typical with rookie pitchers, especially ones who may not be exactly ready for MLB, he just needs to figure out how to get MLB hitters out. MLB hitters are still pretty darn good with two strikes.

I saw a lot I liked from Spencer. Hopefully this is a growth moment for him. He should feel really good that he can pitch at this level, especially once he can figure out how to get MLB hitters out when they get to two strikes.

I don't think it's criminally low....I mean I just extracted ump scorecards data for all games this year and the average missed calls is at 9 per game. Average for 2023 was right around 9 as well.

If we're being honest with ourselves, a lot of those are meaningless. And for every actual missed call you probably have 1 or 2 that players think were missed but are correct.

I think 3 is a good number. But yeah, assuming if you use 3 and all of them are correct that doesn't mean you're done....Actually, assuming you keep it if you get it right, I'd go to 2.

Exactly. To me he's a 5 year $100M type of player.

He's going to slash around .260/.360/.440 with
23-26 HR

That's definitely not the 10 years 300M that he wants.

At this point is he even a 23-26 HR guy? If so he better start heating up the power.

Breggy is top 5 all-time favorite Astro for me, but man I really hope we don't overpay for him. Let someone else eat that.

Arrighetti already showed improvement after his first start when things fell apart in the 3rd inning against KC by avoiding the big inning last night after Jeremy's error. I was negative about the offense or lack thereof but was pleased with his start. Hopefully Hunter bounces back today as well.

Headed to the game tonight with the wife and kids to sit in the Coca-Cola Corner!

It's a part of MMP I've never sat in so who knows. I do know it's a suite and food and drinks are on the house so late night and early morning be damned!!

Agreed. He probably thinks he's moving because he thinks he's getting a mega deal and already knows we have said nah we're good. Given how this offseason went, I will be surprised if he gets over $150M. Is he that much better than Chapman?

After watching him in Spring Training, I think there's some truth to this. The folks I talk to are slowly becoming less confident but insist it's all mental with him. Really hope he figures it out. It's sad to watch, but obviously, if this trend continues it's going to be time to move on.

A couple of favorite Yogi quotes come to mind:

"Slump? I ain't in no slump… I just ain't hitting."

"How can you think and hit at the same time?"

At his age, less may be more. Dial back the cage work. Maybe stop the Pilates, too, if he's still doing it. Eat some cheeseburgers, smoke some cigars, and take a shot or two of whiskey before the game.

It's not about knowing how to hit, it's about being physically capable of doing so. Bagwell retired at 37, same age Abreu is now (at a minimum)

Why not? It's his best position.

and of course Abreu is trying to play at age 37 without andro, creatine, and other such products

that were extremely popular during Bagwell's time

The difference is Bagwell's arthritic shoulder was being masked by steroid and possibly HGH use and that when testing happened and he stopped using the symptoms came back full bore.

Abreu just looks old. He is likely 47 in Cuban years.

Bregman is counting on finding a sucker

it only takes 1 of 30 teams

This is very likely due to his agent. Much like some of Boras's other clients, I think Bregman will likely overestimate his worth and will end up making much less than he anticipates.

Was hoping he may see the writing on the wall and switch agents.

Another possible option for 1B is Mountcastle from the Orioles. His batted ball metrics so far this year and last year well exceeded his actual production, so there's likely some meat left on that bone and he has a few years of control. The Orioles have O'Hearn and need to make room for Mayo and then Basallo soon.
