That was fantastic, felt like a time machine back to my 20s.

One of the most valuable lessons of being a sportswriter for a # of years was realizing that in every sport, just about everyone's season ends with a loss. Really helped me mellow out over the years with my sports rage, which probably peaked with the early 90s Oilers.

The Astros recent stretch has been a gift that delivers again and again. Frustrated when we lose, but able to see good stuff in most games.

And I never once get mad about the Aggie football team anymore.

I was thinking about this Golden Era yesterday.

How nice has it been that we've followed up our WS wins with good teams?

Can't imagine how big of a buzzkill it is for Ranger fans showing up to the ballpark on replica ring night all pumped up only to watch a sub-500 struggling team.

Almost as bad up as going to MMP to get a LMJ bobble head.

Back in the 80s when I was really getting into the Astros, I would sneak my sony walkman into bed with me and try to listen to them on the radio when they played at LA or SF or SD. I very rarely made it all the way through.

The real gut punch would come the next morning when the game had gone too long and the score also wasn't in the newspaper.

Then I'd go until the 5 p.m. news to know if they had won or not.

My favorite was the LMJ 2022 ring giveaway. Love me some Lance but he played for like 1.5 months and might still be giving up homeruns in Philly as we speak.

His ALDS start was elite but he got lit up in game 4 of the ALCS and was historically bad in WS game 3

I say all that… and I have the ring proudly displayed on my bookshelf

Those are some pretty dramatic improvements. He does have a little bit of luck going for him. wOBA is +.063 vs xwOBA & a BABIP of .375 is high even with very good batted ball data.

His EV is above average but not great. Really good launch angle. If he's a heavy pull hitter he could be a Crawford specialist.

This day in Astros history is game I went to in 1996 right after I graduated, Astros v. Cubs May 24, 1996. Video is cued up for the bottom of the ninth.

Good guys got up 4-0 early ,then gave up 7 runs in 2 innings including a blown save by that dirty sip Greg Swindell to fall behind 7-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, with 1 on and 2 out, the good guys go:

2-run homer Biggio to cut it to 7-6
Walk by Jeff Bagwell
Walk by Derek Bell

The Cubs then replaced Turk Wendell with former 'Stro Doug Jones, who gave up an RBI single to Sean Berry to tie it 7-7.

In the bottom of the 10th, Ricky Gutierrez singled, stole second, and came home on an RBI single by John Cangelosi.

Terry Collins - batting Cangelosi leadoff and Biggio second. Pure genius

EDIT: Scott Servais is catching for the Cubs, gives us 4 stolen bases, and is called terrible by Steve Stone.

I think he's prepping their fans for the fact that after they sign Soto he's not going to sign most of their other FAs (e.g. Torres, Verdugo). They'll probably need to reset the luxury tax in the not too distant future too.

The Dodgers did it prior to signing Ohtani. I'll be curious if Soto accepts some deferred compensation (not as much, but not unlike Ohtani) since that loophole is still wide open.

Too funny with a payroll north of $300 million it's still only 2nd highest.

They are projected to be over the tax threshold even without signing Soto so they'd have to trade guys (or not offer them arbitration) to get under.
