Was the betting on baseball?

Otherwise, I don't really care

At best Ohtani paid an illegal bookie.

He most likely had contact with that bookie even if covering for his pal. No way any bookie lets anyone carry a $4.5MM debt without some assurances from his backer.

Worst case is Ohtani was the one placing bets and they got sloppy in paying his bookie directly.

He seems like a very smart and savvy guy who knows what his brand is worth so while possible I doubt he was betting, but it's still not good that he most likely had contact and was in cahoots with an illegal bookie.

I'm not buying this theft theory they've thrown out there for one second.

It'll be intersting how they (Ohtani's team and MLB) try and make this go away. Ohtani's folks have already flipped stories multiple times.
This is kind of irrelevant....

Gambling addictions are real, regardless of your intelligence, resources, etc.

My FIL had a really good friend with a successful business lose his $1mm house and family because of sports betting.

The precident on paying an illegal bookie for non-baseball betting was set by Mansfield with a fine to Jarred Cosart in 2015 and no suspension.

It is a bigger concern than just him betting on baseball or his own baseball games.

I think when you look at the $4.5M...it shows what people are willing to do around gambling. People get in deeper than they realize they will and get desperate.

Here is why all of this is important to me. Almost everyone agrees that Ohtani and Mike Trout are two of... if not THE TWO best players in MLB. Generational players.

Ohtani joined LAAA in 2018 and they have NEVER had a winning record while he was on the team.

Six seasons and they consistently finished 4th out of 5 teams (1 season they finished 3rd) while you have Oakland in the Division and Texas was intentionally tanking. Most people have just said that the Angels are that poorly run. Maybe. Injuries to Trout, Pujols, Rendon, Ohtani, the death of the SP, drug problems. That is all true, but has always been suspicious.

Even if he wasn't betting on his own game, he could have put the fix in on the games and I would expect people would want to know if he "was on the take." I know... I know ... MVP-1, MVP-2, MVP-1 in the past 3 seasons. He doesn't have to throw the whole season... just a game here and there. As a SP AND DH... he had the ability to impact more games than anyone ever has. And not just Ws/Ls. Runs. HRs.

Topps has baseball card inserts where if you predict a player whose card you have hits a HR on a certain day, you get something. If an unusually large amount of money is bet on a player hitting a HR off Ohtani in a specific game, all Ohtani has to do is groove a couple balls to the player.

While Shoeless Joe hit well overall in the 1919 Black Sox WS scandal, people point to the fact his Defense wasn't as sharp and some of his hits that could have gone for extra bases were cut short. Every player has good and bad games and teams are more likely to win when your best player does well.
He was 6-for-11 (.545) in their 3 Ws.
He was 13-for-44 (.295) in their 4 Ls.
He went 0-8 in two of their Ls.
Nobody would look at that and conclude he was on the take. That would be normal.

Totally agree....if he bet on baseball or was manipulating games then he should be done in the game forever. 0 tolerance can be had for that.

But let's get upset about that when it comes to light.

Everything up to that point is just speculation that lines ESPN's pockets and distracts from the greatness that is the Opening Weekend.

But also, let's move baseball to Las Vegas!

They were pretty chummy in a dugout video Wed morning. So either all this hit the fan after that, or something is going on that doesn't seem to bother Ohtani in the least.

If someone stole $4 mill from me, or was using my account to gamble ANY amount, I'd be pretty pissed. If someone got me connected with a federal crime in ANY way, I'd be even more pissed.

Forgive my cynicism, but I'm not buying the reported stories -- and it seems they haven't gotten all the stories out there straight, anyway.

What's really concerning is that if he is proven to have cheated in the game of baseball, all Dodger fans will instantly cease rooting for him and renounce all runs, outs, and wins they get from him.

Ohtani was gambling but smartly had his fall guy ready to go. I don't think anything more will come out of this, but there is gonna be some stink on Ohtani for a lot of folks and it's gonna linger

Based on what's come out to date, this seems the most likely. In addition to the conflicting stories which don't seem very believable, I Just can't see a bookie letting the interpreter run up a 4.5 million dollar tab.

Ohtani was unhittable through 6, then gave up 6 runs in the 7th. The bet covered.

I'm sorry. I can't take that thread seriously. There's zero chance a bookie took this bet.

I dont trust it either but the first thing I thought was the dude was using dollars instead if yen. They would make more sense if it was in yen. Doesn't do his credibility any favors.

Could also be a translation error. Japanese number system is weird. They count by 10,000 instead of everyone else who uses 1,000. It really makes it hard for the uninitiated to understand large numbers.

10 million directly translated is one thousand ten thousands.

Michael Kay made a good point on his radio show the other day...

with regard to whether or not any bets were made on baseball.

when a gambler is sinking further and further into debt...won't he go to what he knows best (baseball in this case) to try to get out of the hole?

he also mentioned that wiring someone $500,000 is not a simple process

there are checks and double-checks and confirmations from the bank and so forth to make sure it's okay and intentional

I doubt Ohtani himself is doing his financial wiring. And wiring that amount is really just a 2-factor-authorization type thing, not some drawn out process.

So Ohtani's best defense going forward is that he's a total moron who has no idea what's going on with his own money.

While earning only $12 million in his first 6 years with the Angels. Now I'm sure he wasn't starving and his endorsement money has to be great, but he's not exactly been in a position where these amounts being discussed are peanuts to him. These amounts being kicked around are more than he made in entire seasons with the Angels. He's gonna have to play the moron role really well to sell it.

The bank is required to file with the Feds any transaction over $10K.

So, if he was dropping $500K payments, it would certainly have triggered a response. I believe $500K might be the limit.

The 1st one would have flagged... and each one from there.

Which brings up another good question... Does Ohtani just have $5M sitting in a checking account?! When I think of all those banks failing (Silicon Valley and First Republic) a couple years ago, I found it funny that people had more money in their accounts than they were insured through FDIC.

But, of course banks people like Ohtani use aren't your local branch BoA.
