I'm not DallasAg, but I can say with certainty that they will profit and do extremely well in terms of revenue etc. I would go so far as to say they'll have the highest revenue in the MLB next season. It's going to be the hottest ticket in LA, which is hard to do.

Think so even as just a DH?

I get the name and his brand, but I felt a big part of why he blew up last year was cause he finally did both at an MVP Level last year. Could definitely see it being that way in 2025 when he's back on the bump

This is just my personal opinion, but I don't think people really care about him as a pitcher. People go see him because they want to watch him flick opposite field bombs, or yank one 450. Ohtani is already an all-timer at the plate, and what you get from him on the mound is icing on top.

Ohtani is also a sneaky baserunner. Hopefully LA utilizes that aspect of his game more this next season.

Crazy! You're better at number crunching than I am, do you think LAD will profit off him with increased ticket, jersey, concession etc. sales in addition to his valued production?
I hope you don't think I was trying to "better" what you provided. If I get criticized about anything it is providing too many numbers. Second to that is taking stats out of context or cherry-picking. And I don't do many of the advanced sabremetrics. For pitching, I'm generally ERA, WHIP, BB9, SO9, IP. Hitting - .avg, HR, SB, OBP or OPS.

Analyzing numbers is both a curse and a benefit. I do it here, because my career hasn't needed that "muscle" and I like to use it.

The LAD and any other team would profit off Ohtani, if they were savvy. Probably more so the LAD over others. IMO, signing Ohtani was less about winning and more about money/revenue.

Winning would have been signing Montgomery and Yamamoto. And they may still do it.

In the 2023 playoffs, the LAD started with Kershaw knowing his Velo was down 3-4mph and he was still gimpy. He gave up 6ER and got 1 Out. Then, 24 yo rookie Bobby Miller got lit up in G2. Lance Lynn was G3. They had 12 P... all SP, IIRC, on the 60IL when I checked in August. They picked up Lynn I think to bridge to the recovery of guys like Urias, whom they were working back from injury. It would have been like us relying on Scherzer, Bradford, and Perez.

In 2024, they have 1 SP currently that has more than 150 IP and 4 guys who are rookies, IIRC.

On the money side, the Dodgers have 8,629 seats to reach capacity if the 56K number is accurate. That means they are limited to adding 700K in attendance. At $100 per ticket, if they sellout every game, they've broken even. Technically, you could lower the bar to say if they add 700K in attendance each person need only spend $100 including the cost of the ticket, parking, and food.

From this site, the average Dodgers fan is already at about $55.
Quote:

  • The Los Angeles Dodgers are the most costly team to see, costing $219 for a family of four.

Also, I believe the Dodgers also have their own media, similar to TNT/Braves, Yes/NYY, WGN/CHC, so if they control that, they'll easly make money.

LAAA is just so dysfunctional. Sad that Trout and Ohtani were wasted there.

$5M well spent.

And if they don't... they'll flip him at the trade deadline for prospects they'll turn into Aces.

I think the two-way status does garner attention, but I'm not sure if the LAAA saw attendance spike when he pitched.

Quote:

"Ohtani did not provide much of an attendance boost for the Angels, who during his six seasons averaged only 163 fans more when he was the starting pitcher at home than when he was not, according to STATS Perform.
The Dodgers have limited increase overall, for attendance, mentioned prior.

My concern with the LAD and Ohtani is his personality, which I only know from what is reported. Supposedly he didn't like post-game interviews and kept his distance from the media. His "secrecy" in FA negotiations were along that line. Was that because they were controlling the message or that he just doesn't like the extra attention of being a star.

Seager seems to be a private person who leads quietly and isn't a real "rah rah" guy.

LA in terms of Los Angeles and the Dodgers is as different from LA in terms of Anaheim and the Angels is about as different as what he'll get paid. At $70M in LA, I think he'll be expected to have more of a public presence than he could keep Anaheim. And he may not like that.

He is supposed to be living (during the season) in a place near the Angels stadium. Anaheim is in Orange County which has historically been very conservative and affluent. He will have to move or fly in a helicopter (similar to Kobe) to games.

I don't know if you saw Bryce Harper in the playoffs when he was at 1st and got his repaired elbow bumped. It was pretty concerning for the Phillies.

I don't think the Dodgers will have $70M TJ-recovering Ohtani stealing bases. You don't want him sliding into 2nd and putting unnecessary impact on that elbow.

Good points.

I always figured the secrecy with his FA Process was to avoid the Carlos Correa fiasco since he has a pretty significant injury history with all his surgeries. With double the money being thrown around, could've definitely been a circus.

Trying to look at it from his lense but then again he won't even tell us the name of his dog which just feels kinda weird right?
Tksymm7

No you don't, and I expect them to be somewhat cautious at the beginning of the season, but you also just spent 70 million on a guy who can do a lot of things, so I'd want to take advantage of what I paid for to the fullest extent possible.

He's not pitching next year and won't play the field at all, so second half of the season why not let him let him loose a little.
DallasAg 94

That was my expectation, as well, regarding Correa.

Pivoting a bit here…and I know Trout's contract is almost un-tradeable, but IF (key word here right lol) a deal were to happen with Philadelphia or another likely suitor, what could that possibly look like in terms of players, prospects and $$ being sent?
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I've always seen Trout as a Roid guy. 6'2"/235 plays CF with speed and power.

Some context: '21-23
Yearly Avg: 79G, .283, 22 HR, 2 SB, .382 OBP, .962 OPS
He was shutdown in '23 due to a hamate bone fracture.

He will be 32 in 2024 and is under contract for 7 more years.
From '24 to '30 (age 38) he is owed $37.12M per year.

I just don't think Trout will ever play over 100G again in a season. My biggest issue for not wanting him is that I'd want him for the playoffs more than the regular season and I just don't believe he'll ever be healthy at the end of the season. Anyone that takes Trout is transferring the risk and cost from the Angels to themselves and IMO, that is incredibly dumb. So... Philly, SDP, or NYMs?

FWIW, Rendon is owed $38.6M per for the next 3 years. He has averaged 49G per season for the past 3 years.

For reference... Juan Gonzalez avg 137G from age 26 to 31. Once he reached 31, he never played over 82G in a season.

Contract and injury history would make it a small return in my opinion. If someone were to pick up his contract I'd imagine a back of the rotation pitcher and a utility guy would get it done

Trout seems like he's about to move to being predominantly a DH with his injury history. If they did move him, they'd have to eat the bulk of his contract and still not get a ton. I suppose a team could take on more of his money to send less in the way of players, but it definitely seems unlikely a situation exists that would be conducive to a trade getting done.

Then again, Moreno is kind of a dumbass so who knows.

From '21-23 Avg:
D Trout : 79G, .283, 22 HR, 2 SB, .382 OBP, .962 OPS <$37.12M per year>
Rendon: 49G, .235, 4 HR, 0 SB, .338 OBP, .701 OPS <$38.6M per year>
Ohtani: 149G, .277, 41 HR, 19 SB, .379 OBP, .964 OPS <$70M per year>

They are both on the payroll for the next 3 years. $75.72M Total

I'm still amazed that, not only did they not try to trade Ohtani at the deadline like they should have, they actually became buyers.

The owner does not care about winning. Yes he is willing to spend a lot of money but I think he is more concerned with acquiring big names to stay relevant in the media than winning ball games.

I didn't bother reading it. The Chronicle has really run with there being a Yankees/Astros rivalry and then there was the World Series where Joe Buck wouldn't shut up about Soto's age. It's a reach on both counts and, to be fair, they've posted it a couple times and most of the comments are Houston people making fun of the articles.

Rangers sitting at 37 on the 40.

LAD @ 40
NYY @ 35

MLBTR reporting that the LAD are going to ship off 2 from their 40 to NYY for a minor leaguer not on 40, in order to add Ohtani and Joe Kelly.

The Dodgers' rotation projection now:
B. Miller (24): 22GS, 3.76 ERA, 124.1 IP, 119 SO <- extent of MLB
M Grove (26): 12GS, 18G, 6.13 ERA, 69.0 IP, 73 SO <-29.1IP/4.60ERA in '22
R Pepiot (25): 3GS, 8G, 2.14 ERA, 42 IP, 38 SO <-36.1/3.47 in '22
Sheehan (23): 11GS, 4.92 ERA, 60.1 IP, 64 SO <- extent of MLB
G. Stone (24): 4GS, 8G, 9.00 ERA, 31.0 IP, 22 SO <- extent of MLB

Gonsolin (29): 20GS, 4.98 ERA, 103 IP, 82 SO < TJ in Aug '23
Dust May (25): 9GS, 2.63 ERA, 48.0 IP, 34 SO <- TJ in July '23
Buehler: <- Likely 60IL to start season

60IL count on the 40 in the offseason and won't get moved off and to the 60 until the season starts. They have 23 P on their 40 and get 13 on their 26.

They will need 2 SPs... maybe 3. Which means they need to move even more players. This may take some time to sort out prolonging resolution on the SP market.

They could include one of the projected SP in a trade for say, Cease, or Tampa's guy.

I'd be ok with anyone in that rotation as a #5... maybe #4, but jeez... not 1-5.

We signed Jesus.

Quote:

The Rangers have agreed to a minor league contract with right-handed reliever Jesus Tinoco, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Presumably the Rep 1 client will head to big league camp this spring.

I expect a few more of these minor league type deals... hopefully SPs. I think the closer we get to ST, the more likely some borderline guys will accept a minor league deal with conditions. The Rangers had an advantage in the past because our rotation sucked and SPs knew they'd get a chance early in the season. With the depth and stability we have, there are better clubs to join.

Maybe we can trade the LAD for some guys recovering from TJ that we can stash on the 60IL until the end of the season.
