I guess the good thing with Scherzer is who knows if it goes that long. He also was supposed to be done for the year when he went out last year and then came back for the playoffs.
We have 3 2H SPs to expect back.
All 3 should get to the 60IL, so we'll have more roster spots once the season starts, but what until then?
This is probably more dependence than I want for Bradford, White, Leiter, and Porter. It will be interesting to see if CY and Bochy agree. Perez? It may be worth it to him to remain in North Texas for the "right amount." He got married a year or so ago and had a kid.
Still want a couple MLB SPs signed to minor league deals that we can call upon if necessary to start the season, or release after 15-20 games into the season so they can try elsewhere.

I'm hoping this was the primary source of his arm issue. It isn't uncommon to have a back issue that causes a player to adjust his throwing motion and tweaks something. IIRC, Tampa had 2 SPs last season that went down with arm fatigue because of back issues. Didn't Framber (or another Astro) do the same?
That being the case, by Sept/Oct he should be good. It also gives us the inside info on his health if 2025 is worth considering, if he plans to still pitch.

Honestly, that's not a terrible rotation to get us thru 3-4 months. Especially if Dunning pitches like he did last year
It doesn't change the budget issue with Bally's.

Anyone that thought max was gonna give us an entire season of starts was living a pipe dream at this point. Hopefully we have the offense to carry the club again.
Bradford will be their fifth starter...
If CY and Ray still don't want to go over the tax I think the only option is to bring out a minor leaguer or two and see who can earn a spot or at the least eat up innings to hold us over till July. Perez is a good option but with how close we are to the tax I don't think it's possible to retain him for the money he will demand.
An article on the Astros got me to thinking. The article pointed out Altuve and Bregman are FAs after 2024 and as such, if they make it that far and decline a QO, they return a draft pick in the 2nd Rd... but IF they are over the CBT, that becomes a 4th Rd pick. That could be used to justify staying under the CBT threshold.
For the Rangers, Scherzer, Heaney, and potentially Eovaldi (v opt) are FAs that could be extended a QO and if declined an extra Draft pick. Leclerc is a FA, as well, but not sure he'd get a QO.
It was an issue for the Halos and Ohtani. The Halos ultimately got under the CBT.
Interesting data point whether it is incentive enough or not.

Having said that... if you were to sign Perez, as an example, we have some trade options when the other 3 start to return. The rest of Perez money comes off the books for 2024 if traded.

Honestly probably better for Max to have surgery now, as I think many were expecting he wasn't going to make it through more than a handful of starts before hitting the IL anyways.

There is a lot of salary that comes off in 2025 and Mahle is cheap for 2024, so I'm not ruling it out. But definitely seems like chances are declining big-time.

True but... that seems to be market rates for a quality starter. And we have one who wants to stay, and proved himself clutch for this squad all postseason.
Figure out a way to stretch the dollar for a guy like that instead of signing a bunch of disabled list all stars.
If the Balleys crap is still hosing us then figure out a way to structure his deal in line with when you expect cash flow to open up.
Just defer that money 2 years from now like Ohtani. If the Dodgers can do it anyone can do it. Be creative.
