I don't think they will sit the season out.
They can wait until an injury happens or a bad stat happens. Imagine if the Yankees have a bad April and then Cole ends up needing TJ.
Or imagine if JV doesn't recover in time.
That's not to mention if any other contender has a major injury to a #1 or #2

Worst case for these guys is they wait until after the draft and sign somewhere after the QO requirement drops.
Montgomery has no QO attached so it already doesn't impact his value.

I wouldn't say any possible deal is off but there would have to be a large jump in the yearly cost to land him.Gut feeling here. But, I think Crane is going to possibly up the offer at some point. We need another starting pitcher desperately. It doesnāt feel like anyone is in a hurry to sign Snell at what heās asking for currently.

Schwab is so cringy and Ben is way too dramatic.
The #Astros interest in Snell is a shorter team deal with high AAV with the same type blueprint as the Boras Corporation did with Bellinger. #Giants #Angels #Yankees have also been linked to him at different times this offseason.They are not interested in a Nola-type contract

Two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell has informed the Houston Astros that he's willing to sign a short-term deal to join them, but is seeking at least a two-year guarantee for $66 million, that includes an opt-out after the 2024 season.
The Astros are intrigued, club officials says, but are the latest team to balk at his asking price.
The Astros, who began exchanging proposals with agent Scott Boras earlier in the week, are waiting to see if the price-tag drops. The Astros' concern is that they will be over the third luxury tax threshold if they sign Snell.
They have a projected luxury payroll of $256.828 million, according to Cot's Contracts, and will eclipse the second tax threshold of $277 million (45% surcharge) if they sign Snell to a contract exceeding $20 million a year.
The San Francisco Giants remain in the picture for Snell, but also are waiting for Snell to lower his demands, just as they did when they signed third baseman Matt Chapman to a three-year, $52 million contract with opt-outs after each year.

Remember Crane doesn't like opt outs. He was really against it with Correa, Said he doesn't feel like you can build a roster that way.
It's far from over guys. Like I said last night, it's 50/50 which hasn't changed since a couple nights ago when those stories came out. We're in contact with Boras almost every day.
I am with Crane and Brown on this one. It's dumb to give him an opt out after 1 year if the price tag is 33 M. Lower it to 25ish and then we're talking. Maybe something like:

They (front office) have been pretty strict on vision in terms of contract years so that doesn't surprise me. It's one of the reasons we didn't re-sign Neris. He wanted an extra year that we weren't willing to give. Then he goes to the Cubs for a one year guarantee w/ second year player option.
Might have to play a little chicken with Snell and Boras, but I'm optimistic it will happen. It'll give Crane some good PR to pimp when he's making his media rounds at the Houston Open in about a week.

Think he gets that player option if a certain number of appearances occur. Either way I thought it was funny that he was hung up on the years and couldn't get it elsewhere.
Loperfido could make the roster. Not likely but he has a shot. He'll contribute at some point this year.
The organization is pretty split on Melton. He has tremendous power and elite speed.. legitimate 30/30 upside. The problem with him is his K rate and swing and miss. He's also pretty old for someone who has only played a handful of games in AA.
It's possible he makes adjustments and takes the next step this year and ends up on the big club. But I lean a 2025 debut for him.
