Man, I know the money spent on Altuve could probably be used better, but there is just something right about rewarding one of the guys who helped build this team to where it is today by taking a more friendly contract earlier in his career and who has done it with a fantastic attitude.

As a Biggio guy growing up, Altuve is right there with him in my adult years. Couldn't be happier for the Astros and Altuve. I love that man.

Love signing Jose. The deal is fair on both sides. What is interesting to me is how much longer he can play 2B. Now that he has his money and doesn't have the pressure of searching for a deal, he could theoretically start moving to another position anytime. Wouldn't mind him getting time in LF next season, maybe even some this season to get Dubon time at 2B.
I wish he had the arm for 3rd.

This is random math based on nothing.

Say we take Jose Altuve's 162-game averages and we project that he gets to 80% of that every year over the next 6 years of his contract. Just a random number I made up based on injuries and a decline of abilities over time.

His 162-game averages are very salty. 103 runs, 199 hits, 39 2B, 20 HR, 73 RBI, etc.

So if he avoids major injuries over the next years and averages 130 games a year for the rest of his career, this is what he could end up looking like at the end of the 2029 season when he'll be 39 years old and set to turn 40 in May 2030. These would be his career totals estimated at that point, along with his place among all-time Astros and all-time MLB hitters.

Games played: 2,448.2nd all-time (Biggio 2,850); MLB 73rd all-time

At-Bats: 9,771. 2nd all-time (Biggio 10,876); MLB 39th all-time

Runs scored: 1,556 2nd all-time (Biggio 1,844); MLB 56th all-time

Hits: 3,002 2nd all-time (Biggio, 3060) MLB 33rd all-time

Doubles: 587 2nd all-time (Biggio 668); MLB 21st all-time

Home Runs: 305 3rd all-time (Bagwell 449); MLB 153rd all-time

RBI: 1,097 3rdd all-time (Bagwell 1,529); MLB 221st all-time

Curious as to what the going rate should have been? I know you look at a lot of stats that would probably factor into that line of thinking? Something like 5 years 100 mill?

I'm at the ball fields with my middle kiddo. But I'd guess this is probably the richest contract given to someone entering his age 34 season.

Per spotrac

Largest Contract Signed Age 34 or 35
DeGrom 5/185
Donaldson 4/92
Gray 3/75
Victor Martinez 4/68
Molina 3/60
Abreu 3/58.5
Cruz 4/57

I feel like 5/100 should be been enough to get this deal done. Or we should have tacked on another year to get the AAV down.

Don't mistake what I'm saying. Just because it isn't the perfect deal, doesn't mean I'm not ecstatic that Altuve is locked in forever. I literally love him.

He's a candidate for most overlooked talent of the past 20 years. Three really bad injuries hurt his career but he was still hitting laser beams late in his career led he AL in OPS (.974) and OBP (.409) inn 2014 at age 35. Had he stayed a catcher (although he sucked) and not suffered really bad injuries in 2008 and a torn ACL at the ened of 2011 that caused him to miss all of 2012, he was a borderline HOF - finished with 2,153 hits, 432 2B, 246 HR and a .295 BA

Some perspective on the 2nd base position in Houston for the last 30+ years.

Oh and those 03/04 teams had a pretty solid 2nd baseman as well. We've been spoiled at that position

Ok, so what's next on everyone's wish list? I'm "ok" if Altuve's extension is the last move. However, I'd feel better if we added an outfielder (Soler, Duvall, etc.). Either that or surprise the **** out of everyone with a King Tuck extension.

I think for this offseason I'm good. But if you can get a Tucker extension done, best news ever.

I don't see it happening this year though

Bregman is now your only potential free agent who will get a QO. We are over the luxury tax threshold so that is currently after the 4th round whereas if you get under the threshold it's at the end of the second. Given their moves this offseason it doesn't appear to be a priority for them but we are already losing a pick this year for the Hader move.

Ive resigned myself to the fact that Tucker doesn't want to be an Astro long term. If he did, it already would have happened.

Springer wanted to get paid, Correa wanted to get paid and be the man (0 for 2), Tucker seems like he wants to be a beach guy and enjoy life in a little slower setting. I know he's from Tampa. Seeing as how they're about to have Wander Franco's 11-year $182 million deal come off the books.

I'm surprised Bregman hasn't made a deal yet. His extra businesses around town and Htown's proximity to LSU and to New Mexico seem like a nice fit, but who knows with these guys?

A funny entry from This Day in Astros History

1994 - Public batting practice by retired NBA star Michael Jordan draws hundreds of reporters. Jordan looks to sign a deal with the Chicago White Sox as an outfielder but some Astros are quick to point out it won't be easy for him. At his home, Houston pitcher Todd Jones is so incensed with radio callers predicting baseball stardom that he calls the station himself to challenge the basketball champion.

Before this winter I was thinking we would stick to being just under or just over the first luxury tax mark and make small additions. Looking back, the Verlander trade signaled that doing that would be impossible if we wanted to continue being one of the best teams again this year and beyond. The Hader deal and the fact that we didn't insist on a home team discount with Jose makes it nearly impossible to get back under the tax for 2025 with only Bregman,Graveman and possibly Verlander as FA's.

So yeah, I could see another decent sized contract being added to fortify the bullpen or pitching staff either now or at the trade deadline.

I don't care about value or any other BS. Locking up Lil Gigante to finish his career here is a boss move. Even more so considering Altuve could have easily left for more years or money a couple of times.

I highly doubt we sign Bregman to an extension. They like Dezenzo a lot and think Bregman's best days are likely behind him. Those trade rumors this offseason were legit- but they ultimately decided to keep him. I think they see that money better spent in other areas.

2024 Records / Milestones to look out for.

Jose Altuve
  • 300 Stolen Bases (Currently 293)
  • All-Time Postseason HRs - 29 Manny Ramirez (Currently 27)
  • All-Time Postseason Double - 22 David Ortiz (4th), 23 Jorge Posada (3rd) (Currently 21)
  • All-Time Postseason RBI - 61 Derek Jeter & David Ortiz (tied for 5th) (Currently 55)
  • HOF Second Baseman WAR - 53.0 Bobby Doerr (15th), 55.1 Billy Herman (14th) (Currently 52.6) - it won't be in 2024 but next up is 59.9 Jackie Robinson, 60.4 Joe Gordon, & 60.9 Ryne Sandberg. Passing that group would be amazing.

Bumping since it is Jose Altuve Appreciation Day(s).

If we assume Altuve finishes his career at the end of his new deal, here is what he'll need to average to hit some milestones.

3,000 Hits - 159 Hits Per Year (3,001). In the last 2 seasons Jose has had 112 (injury) and 158. This is going to be a very tall task.

300 Home Runs - 16 HR per year (305). This seems very reasonable. Biggio ended with 291, Hornsby 301, Cano 335, Kent 377, & Soriano 412. Tuve would need 21-22 per to pass Cano. That's the stretch goal. Its not crazy either, he has 31, 31, and 28 in '19, '21, & '22.

1,000 RBI - 43 RBI per year (1,005). Very reasonable goal. 1,100 is probably attainable at 59 per. Some big names on the all time list Morgan 1133, Alomar 1134, Soriano 1159, Biggio 1175.

1,500 Runs - 73 Runs per year. Again, very reasonable goal. He topped 73 last year in a shortened year. As long as he leads off with sluggers like Yordan behind him, he'll score some runs. 1,600 would need 90 per. Biggio leads all-time (for 2B) at 1844.

60 WAR - 1.3 WAR per year. That seems insanely low, right? It kind of is, but kind of isn't. Altuve's never been a great baserunner (good base stealer) and his defensive metrics have declined. He's going to have to slug his was to the top. ZIPS 3 year projection has him at 3.4, 2.3, & 1.7 over the next 3 seasons. That gets him to 60. And 60 means he passes Jackie Robinson. He needs to average 2.2 per to match Biggio at 65.8. He can't afford to fall off at 38/39 and have a negative year like Maldonado or Abreu.

I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but I think contract year Bregman isn't anything special. Not that he's bad. He's about what he has been. Good defense. Gets on base. Doesn't hit for much power. ~120 wRC+. High 3 WAR.

There is a decent argument that he is the greatest playoff performer in history.

Jeter has more hits but tons more games. Otherwise Jose is basically top 2-5 in every category. He's made the most of his shots. Of course he's had all the opportunities too. Guys who only played in WS like Mantle or Berra could never amass the PAs to amass the counting stats.

I cannot imagine Tucker enjoying the right field fans at Yankee Stadium after one of his outfield misadventures.

I know Cole has a similar laidback beach guy kind of vibe, but he has a little killer inside. I've never seen that from Tucker and just don't think he would handle the New York spotlight that well. 100% conjecture.

Hard to believe how old that team was in 2004 when Biggio moved to LF. Beltran and Everett being the youngest position players at 27.
