We have a higher payroll than Arlington.

But they have been more willing to spend freely on larger contracts. Ours is up there because of player longevity and it's taken a while. We have also been willing to let pieces walk. They have been willing to spend much more in the FA pool. Of course they had to because they weren't developing talent.

That's it. Crane should sell to somebody willing to spend.

Ah yes...The ole Crane is a tightwad take has appeared.

Honestly surprised we've made this long into the offseason without that hot take.

No one predicted anything close to that. I feel like that's paying for near ceiling.

A player with an ankle injury has an agreement with the giants, what did possibly go wrong?

Good grief. The Crane criticism is absurd. We CURRENTLY have a streak of LCS appearances unrivaled by any other team in the history of baseball save one, and we could tie that mark this year. The Astros have not just been really good under Crane, but historically so.

I still give Luhnow 90% credit and the effect of his regime is dwindling year by year

I agree, however, this team was built with a lot of young farm talent. We traded away a ton and don't seem to be willing to sign many or be willing to extend top tier offers to our top tier guys. Historically, that is.

I'm on the fence at this moment. Hoping he proves me wrong with Tucker, Bregman, etc.

Luhnow himself said he was gunning for a 10 year window. Crane hired Luhnow, btw. Wild Card in 2015 was the window opening.... so, here we are in 2024

Lunhow himself said how supportive Jim was. A GM can only do what the owner allows. It's more like 70/30. Jim definitely let and encouraged Jeff to go for some of the biggest transactions in franchise history in JV and ZG. One absolutely paid off and the second almost did.

The sad fact is that the players who followed Beltran over the cliff did irrepairable harm to the franchise, far more than Jim Crane has ever done. It sucks, but what a great run this has been.

Yes, let's ruin MLB the same way the NBA ruined itself. Smart.

How is this any different than what the Mets last year?

Remember when the Dodgers traded for Scherzer & Turner?

MLB seemed pretty successful when the Yankees just bought everyone from 95-2010.

You can buy wins in the regular season. It doesn't always work in October.

WGAF...Let em sign everyone. Better to put them all on one team from the other league then to let them go to multiple AL teams that we have to compete with.

They'll be stacked then get bounced before they get to the NLCS just like they have every year sans the clown COVID year.

You seriously don't think that losing all those draft picks hasn't hurt the depth of the farm system? Limiting potential trade pieces, not to mention depth that could have been developed? Yikes

I'm not worried. Everyone always complains about the big markets signing everyone, but MLB free agency is structured so that most players are only in their prime for a short period of time after they hit the market. A Dodgers super team will only be great for two or three years. After that, they'll be like the Yankees. Good, but not great. All of the dynasties for the past thirty years in the MLB were built by the farm systems. Even the Yankees of the late 90s/early 00s were built through the farm system.

It's amazing what flexibility LA has when they are basically getting Ohtani for free for 10 years.

This league is whacked.

Crane went into luxury tax territory to sign…checks notes…Victor Caratini.

And FTD, you can't help but hope they win nothing from here on.

I hear a rumor that the Dodgers are after the ghost of Lou Gehrig. Will play for same salary he did when alive.

And still defer 90%.

Yeah let's ignore we're paying Bregman, Altuve, Verlander, Javier, Abreu, McCullers, Alvarez, Pressly, Montero, & Graveman medium to big money on deals after their original team control.

Even if Ohtani cost 70 M in 2024, they're still about 20 M lower than where we are. They cut so much payroll to make this happen. Plus we know they have no problem going way way over it.

Folks are kidding themselves if they ever expected us to compete in spending with the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, etc.

Hell the Padres made it seem like anyone could spend like that, but that was strictly a dying rich guy that couldn't take him money with him. Now that he has passed you are seeing a financial retreat

Would love for MLB to get a hard cap or at least a stricter soft cap, but we all know that will never happen

So going back to an earlier comment about a "10 year window"

IMO the window really started in 2017 because that was their original plan.

So if it is a 10 season window, that means it ends after 2026… so 3 more seasons. How does the window finish the last 3 seasons? I'm going to say 2 more ALCS, and 1 pennant and.

That would be 5 Pennants, 2 titles and 9/10 playoff appearances

So which year are we not making the playoffs? 2026 I hope.

ALCS 9 years in a row sounds nice though.

I'd say mini-rebuild in 2026 post-Tucker, Pressly, JV and Framber. So either barely miss or an ALDS/WC exit.

That is assuming we don't extend Bregman, Tucker and Framber
