What are y'all's thoughts on the Astros home struggles? It's weird. Is it too big of a sample size to be an anomaly?

Mental at this point IMO
Would agree. Seems to be a thing this year. Hopefully next year it reverts back to previous years.
Just one of those weird things?

It makes no sense other than mental, right? Cause it was both pitching and hitting at home. Although, wasn't there something about the centerfield backdrop messing with the hitters? Cause on the road you have the best team ERA and 2nd best team batting Average. But both were middle of the pack at home games.

That's what scares me about coming back to Arlington, cause our team ERA at home was 4.5 or something. We desparately need this game 2 for me to feel comfortable cause Scherzer throwing a rehab start in Game 3 scares the crap out of me with your road splits.

I think there were a lot of issues this year, mostly mental, but I do think the rift between Dusty and Dana contributed a lot too.

I think it's easier to focus on the road when you're away from the noise, and there has been a lot of it in Houston this year.

I think yesterday was just because Jordan was damn good.

Why did Carter get benched? He can't hit lefties?

Yes and Grossman is good against lefties. Carter will come in as soon as Framber is gone.

You don't know Dusty apparently. He will ride Framber past the 5th every time

Almost triple Eovaldi's last start vs Houston.

True. Giving Evo his rehab start against the Stros wasn't the brightest idea.

Crazy how much he stunk in Sept only to be great vs TB & BAL.

Health is a big factor and the fact he's been a completely different pitcher in the playoffs for his entire career.

He was brilliant in 2018. Astros got him pretty good in 2021 tho. Those 3 games were the outlier for him.

Oops, wrong thread.

Anyways, Harper follows.

To keep it to the thread. Whoever advances in the ALCS, if the face the Phillies, I hope they kick their ass.

So what should I be looking for in Javier's game today? As in, if he's on he's doing "this" really well, if he's off he's doing "that".

Didn't see his start against the Twins, but his stat line is an odd one with 5.0IP (solid), 9ks (wow), 1 H (wow), 5BB (huh?)

If he's walking guys, it'll be a short outing

His strikeout numbers are always good which also means his pitch count goes up. So if he's also walking guys it'll be no more than 5 innings

He's usually not a 6+ inning guy. Even last year the combined WS no hitter he started, he only went 6 innings.

Fastball at the top of the zone getting whiffs and flyballs, throwing a wipeout slider that is competitive enough to get swings. If there aren't whiffs and Ks then he's probably going to give up some long balls. Even when he's good he usually gives up some walks.

His strike #s went from elite to about average from '22 to '23. At the end of the season, he started to regain the '22 juju.

2021 - 30.7% K% (83 ERA-)
2022 - 33.2% K% (66 ERA -)
2023 - 23.1% K% (107 ERA-)
2023 9/20 to 10/1 - 33.9% (54 ERA-)
2023 Postseason - 40.9% K% (1 start) (0 ERA-)

He always walks guys
2021 - 12.5% BB%
2022 - 8.9% BB%
2023 - 9.0% BB%

I will give a majority of you Astros fans credit because in my experience, most are diehards. Y'all live and die by the Astros maybe it's because it's the only franchise you can count on. The Oilers left, no hockey team, and the Rockets (while great in the 80's & 90's) are just your run of the mill franchise with a similar all-time winning % as the Mavericks (11th and 13th respectively). And let's be honest, it's basketball in the state of Texas. Football and Baseball are king (outside of San Antonio). So the diehards are the diehards for a reason.

When I lived there back in 2011-2014, I really enjoyed going to Minute Maid as you could find a ticket for $5 and sit anywhere you want. Plus it was baseball, and who doesn't like going to a baseball game. Although it cost more to park down there than it was for a ticket, beer, and a hotdog combined. And then my cousin moved down from St. Louis to work in the sales office of the Astros and I was able to get a lot of cool perks/seats. Hell, I was one of the few thousand there when y'all broke up Darvish's perfect game in the 9th. The rivalry started there for me personally because I was so mad that I couldn't frame that ticket as a keepsake.

But just like any successful run, you're gonna get new fans and when those fans start talking trash is what pisses most people off. Seriously, you're talking trash and you didn't go through the terrible years in the early 10's or get your heart broken by the White Sox. That part isn't you diehard's fault, as you're just the recipient of those types of fans/people right now. Oh, and trying to brush the cheating scandal under the rug.

All that being said, I am truly happy a DFW team finally has a close rival. We had some good battles with the Angels over the years and everyone likes to claim the Yankees as a "rival", but it's so hard to get up for those series as they're halfway across the country. Same with the Stars closest rival being 9 hours away in either Nashville, Denver, or St Louis and the Cowboys playing in the East albeit having good history with every one of those teams it sucks they're 15 hours away. The only other rivalry I would put on par with this one was the Spurs in the 00's and early 10's. But again, it's basketball in the State of Texas.

All that to say, F the Astros!

I was hoping the light hearted nature of the post would lend context clues that I was being facetious. But apparently not, my bad.

The post fits better on the Trash Talking Thread, light hearted or not.

I disagree as I'm not trash talking anyone outside of the tongue in cheek reference at the end. I don't really know how anything what I said was trash talking or uncivil?

I was hoping to strike up a conversation surrounding that this series, while stressful as all get out, is fun as heck to have. Plus I was having a little bit of 'member berries reminiscing about my time in Houston.

Eh, as an Astros fan -- I disagree. It's fine here.

I got what he was saying. It was light-hearted.

I'd expect a Rangers fan to say Eff the 'Stros.

Fair enough. I still think it fits better on the Trash Talking Thread since that thread is specifically about the rivalry between the two. IMO this thread was started to allow baseball fans from either side to discuss baseball with each other without fear of a timeout due to the over zealous getting their panties in a wad on the team threads.

Heads up for anyone going to the game tonight, parking lots open at 3:30 and the gates open at 4:30.

If you didn't pre-purchase parking, game day parking will still be available at most lots surrounding the stadium. It will be limited, so I recommend getting there early. Then just go hang out at Texas Live for a bit.

Roof will be closed.

Be prepared for traffic to be an absolute nightmare leaving the game.
