I'm at the 6A state semifinal game between Pearland and Westlake. Batter for Westlake has two strikes, pitcher pitches it, batter clearly tips it and the catcher clearly misses it off his glove, as we see it go rolling away. Umpire also clearly makes a signal that it's been tipped.

However, a second later the ump also signals that the batter is out. Westlake coach and fans complain, to no avail. None of the rest of us are privy to the explanation.

Is there some scenario that could cause the batter to be out here?

Did they change the call that no contact was made?

Yeah, that's why we were all so confused. I just can't figure out if there's something obscure that could have happened that wasn't obvious to everyone else.

Maybe so, and we just couldn't see the ump negate it from where we were.

If the ump initially called it a foul tip, then decided it was a miss, the batter has still been shortchanged, since on a wild pitch or passed ball on Strike 3, the batter can run for first base.

Which he wouldn't do if the ump calls it foul.

Piece of info that didn't seem important at first, but in light of your comment: there was a runner on first. So if the ump decides it was a swing and a miss with a dropped ball, an out would be the correct call with a man on first.

That still doesn't explain why he changed his call, but at least the ruling seems correct now IF that's what happened.

I'd say he likely ended up saying no contact.

Possible he also said the catcher caught it and dropped it off the transfer?

Assuming it was less than 2 outs?

The batter could have stepped out of the box or got called out on catchers interference.

Catchers interference would award the batter first base, not cause an out.

Batters interference may be what you're talking about.....but kind of hard to interfere with a catcher making a throw to a base if he didn't have the ball....
