Just don't get the wisdom in sending out that lineup when Wednesday is a day game. Followed by a day off Thursday and Friday is a very late night game.

You want rest? You're going to get a lot of it with the rest of Wednesday, all of Thursday, and 90% of Friday before the game starts. The team isn't traveling either. Just going right across the bridge.

It's not worth killing the winning streak, stopping our momentum, and giving the Astros a lift before their game just so we can get some extra rest when we have a lot coming.

Nope, rolling with career 0.200 hitter Josh Smith.

Thanks Bochy. 0-2 on punt games. Glad those games don't count in the standings.

It's not the end of the world. This team needs to get healthy for the stretch run and playoffs.

Maybe he doesn't realize if we're up in the division 3 games with 2 games to go, he can rest some guys then too.

Or that if we lose the division lead that we're going to playing 3 more games and that rest really wasn't worth it.

Sigh. You take the good with the bad and there's a lot more good than bad, but frustrating we run a punt lineup out there with an off day tomorrow.

I get we need to punt games but why not do it against a solid team where we don't have as good a chance of winning? Would really help gain ground when we beat teams were supposed to beat.

The Orioles are winning the next two games against the trash cans so we will be fine.

3 have come against Rangers..Ugh! Saw this coming when lineup posted.

I don't think this was about giving guys rest before the next game as much as it was having to let them sit because of previous games.

Garver and Seager are your only guys who "should" be starting, and you have to go easy on both of them. Not as much "need them full strength for SF" as much as it was "Garver just caught 3 straight and if he goes for another game he might die".

Yeah, this was a punt lineup, but it was the regulars that let us down.

The hits came from Jank, Huff, Grossman, and Smith. Would've scored some runs if Semien, Lowe, Garcia, or Leody did anything of note.

We should've punted the one in San Francisco against their ace. It seems like we face every teams ace now a days anyway.

Reminds me when we punted that game against the cardinals, opting to not sweep them so that we could go all out for a road series in Tampa where the rays actually shuffled their rotation to give us all their good pitchers.

This isn't college football, all these wins count the same. Beat up on the bad teams and take your chances against the good teams.

"Winning the series" is such an odd concept.

The standings that determine postseason play look at Games Won, not Series Won.

Sure, you win enough series you've likely won enough games -- but that Game 3 of a series you've already won the first 2 in counts just as much as Game 1 and 2 of the series.

I know our options are limited with Seager resting the hand, but you DH him in this game and just one hit is potentially the difference. Throw in giving Garver the off-day for Huff, even ignoring that production dip at the plate -- the A's took full advantage of the production dip behind the plate as well, playing their 1st run by taking advantage of Huff's poor accuracy on back to back steals.

It just winds up being another one of those games that it's not even that we gave a guy some rest, but that we managed to give just enough guys some rest to lose a winnable game. Seager DH's and we possibly win that game. Garver catches and we possibly win that game.

But we're gonna rest them both because we have an off-day coming tomorrow.

Until we lose the top spot in the West I'm gonna just go with Bochy's decisions.

Garver caught 76 games in 2018.

80 games in 2019.

55 games in 2021.

He's caught 21 games this year.

But he needs rest?

Yeah we all hope so. The unfortunate reality is all we can do is sit and wait until 9 pm Friday night and the lead could possibly be down to 1.5 games by then. Although I'd say that's very unlikely that the O's get swept in their own park.

Whooo life comes at you fast. Honestly felt like Florida last year. You saw who was playing and you know you're gonna lose but you somehow talk yourself into [insert bench player] is gonna finally perform. Nope.

I completely agree with resting against good teams if needed and not mailing it in on game three against a bad team just because we "won the series". All the wins count the same and at this point it's about just getting to the post season and racking up wins. So I try to get inside Boch's head. Could it be that he feels "going all out" against the good teams better prepares a team for a postseason run? Does focusing and playing your starters throughout the tough series give them something to revert back to during the postseason grind? I don't know I am just trying to find the reason for this strategy because it has driven me crazy all year and Boch obviously knows baseball better than I do.

Good points man. Maybe it's possible he doesn't want to kill a teams confidence if you punt tough games? Can't imagine that would make me feel too good as a player if he gave away games against the Astros, Rays, Orioles etc.

Losing 3 times to one of the worst teams in mlb history is probably not a great substitute. I'm assuming a lot here, but there is also a race for #1 in the AL that is also at stake and could be significant considering how well we play at home

I think it's simply that he believes over the course of the season giving guys off days here and there keeps the team fresh. I doubt there's any real kind of analytics behind it, as that's not really his style... But suddenly keeping Jung fresh or keeping Heim fresh... or keeping Seager fresh... Was it really that important? All 3 of those guys are going to play less than 120 regular season games this year.

Ron Washington used to do the same thing. It's a very "old school" way of managing, so much that you hear it from the telecast team as well as the commentators.

And Bochy could be right, you never really know. Maybe Seager said he couldn't go today. Maybe Garver said he couldn't go today. But I don't think it's a coincidence that we saw this same type of lineup against StL the get-away day a month or so back. This is a Bochy decision, not a player decision.

The guy has forgotten more baseball than we'll ever know, and he's got a trio of World Series titles... but just like any coach that doesn't mean he's always making the right move. He's a career sub-0.500 manager, so he's not above criticism.

And WHY didn't Seager pinch hit for Smith in the ninth?
