Expanded Roster info

Several of us, myself included, have asked about the new expanded roster rules. See below, from MLB.com. if you click the link they profile a few prospects that could be called up, Jung is included.

Expanded rosters are coming. Expanded rosters are coming.

OK, sure, this isn't the tidal wave of player additions that came in past years, but Sept. 1 remains a large date on the baseball calendar as Major League rosters swell just in time for final playoff pushes.
Here's what you need to know ahead of roster expansion on Thursday:

Roster limits
From Opening Day to May 1 this year, Major League clubs were allowed to carry 28 players before slimming back to normal 26-man levels from May 2 onwards. Until now. From Sept. 1 through the rest of the season, active rosters will expand again to cover 28 players, no more no less. Teams can carry 14 pitchers at most too to cut down on the endless parade of bullpen arms that often made September games a slog.
The hard cap at 28 is an important distinction from Septembers of old. Previously, clubs could call up any member of the 40-man roster for the month. That is no longer the case, though even a boost of two extra players should be helpful for the stretch run.

Minor League schedule
Typically, the Minor League Baseball season has ended around Labor Day. Now, Single-A and High-A regular seasons will end one week later on Sept. 11, Double-A on Sept. 18 and Triple-A all the way on Sept. 28. There won't be as much a concern that any farmhands close to the Majors aren't fresh or in game shape throughout the month ahead.

Rookie eligibility
In another change from previous years, any service time, at-bats or innings pitched accrued in September do count toward rookie eligibility. In other words, there will be prospect graduations coming in the weeks ahead.
That said, any prospect called up within the last few days -- such as Corbin Carroll or Cade Cavalli -- or moving forward is unlikely to hit the 45-day requirement to lose rookie status. (They could still reach 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched, but that is also improbable.) So even if we see an onslaught of prospect promotions shortly, then don't expect the callups to take players out of the running for 2023 Rookie of the Year Awards. That brings us to the next point …

Effect of new CBA
The collective bargaining agreement signed by MLB and the MLBPA in the spring instituted a new policy for 2022 aimed at curbing service-time manipulation. A club that starts a top prospect on its Opening Day roster while he retains rookie status is eligible to receive an extra Draft pick if the player gets sufficient award consideration before he becomes arbitration-eligible. It's likely part of why we saw big names like Julio Rodrguez, Bobby Witt Jr. and Spencer Torkelson make Major League rosters out of the gate back in the spring.

That's all well and good for Opening Day 2023, but how does it affect September 2022?
Well if clubs are considering starting their top prospects out of the gate next year, they might be more likely to give them their debuts now, in order to experience the Majors for the first time and make whatever adjustments necessary in the offseason to hit the ground running in late March.

Buckle up. Carroll and Cavalli may have just been the start. We could see an onrush of more prospects over the next month.

In response to both posts directly above, first, I am glad that service time manipulation was addressed so heavily in the negotiations. These young stud prospects like Julio, Bobby Witt Jr., Corbin Carroll need to be playing! Gone are the days that these top guys spend four+ years in the minors in order to squeeze an extra year of control out of them. Transforming this game from an old mans sport of 32+ year old men to a younger mans game should be an extreme priority!

Second, the batting and pitching aren't surprising at all. The fielding on the other hand, is unacceptable. And I know Nate Lowe has been less than stellar at 1st, but he isn't the only reason we are 25th. I also understand that Corey Seager isn't a gold glover at short, but the metrics think he's fine. Semien also isn't great, but wow I didn't think our team defense wasn't that poor.

I will say this, Heim did look like a damned little league catcher receiving that pitch. He didn't help

It literally crossed the inside part of the plate. There should have been no need to frame it. Was a strike the whole way

I realize this. That's why I posted what I did before. But he basically anti-framed it. His glove goes flying out of the zone and he basically heeled/thumbed the ball. It was bad catching and worse umpiring

God stop swinging at that *****! That breaking ball hasn't hit the zone a single time.

MLB has to be able to grab some say so over the umpires union.... Hernandez shows up for a series..... both teams say "nope" not with him out there.
If they are afraid of the union ..... pay him but not assign him any games!!!

I honestly think he likes the power he has over MLB and if he loses it he will cause issues.

the fake catchers interference was worse than any ball strike. First he awards the batter 1st on a foul ball..... Heim says wtf???? no way....then Ump takes the catchers inference away..... then motions for Houston bench to challenge the call..... just inept!!!!

The Dallas Morning News has been all over the Rangers top prospects recently. They have an update currently on their page about Jack Leiter. Over his last six starts, he has pitched 30 and 2/3's innings, given up 11 runs for an ERA of 3.23, and has 35 strikeouts to 11 walks. The numbers let on that he is starting to settle in and get comfortable with professional baseball. I would still like him to clean up his efficiency more, but I am beginning to think that he is just an aggressive guy on the mound, so being slightly inefficient comes with the territory unless your name is DeGrom.

I was thinking of a comparison for Leiter while looking at his baseball reference page, and believe that Dylan Cease from the White Sox (Cy Young candidate) is just about as perfect as it gets. They both have tremendous "stuff," with awesome strikeout numbers. However, they both maintain significant walk numbers and are relatively inefficient.

At the end of the update about Leiter they mentioned what Cole Winn has been up too recently, and my god it has been ugly. He's moving into some very deep waters that I am not sure he will get out of. No idea what the Rangers do here, but they need to do something pretty quick.

With Cole Winn, he has been struggling since he took a hard line drive off of his heel in April-May. I genuinely wonder if there are lingering effects (physically & psychologically) from that hit that caused a mechanical change in his delivery. Something is majorly off and if I was the Rangers I would shut him down.

SOmething is definitely up with Winn. Scott Lucas has commented a few times that his velo is there, that's it's a command type issue. Maybe the issue is between his ears (psychological as you mentioned). Hopefully they can get him straightened out, he was one of the top pitching prospects but has definitely taken a step back this year.
