He's NATE to me as I don't care what his momma said.

I personally would love to see somebody else at 1st and Lowe as the DH. He's a great hitter, but his fielding is average at best.

Same here. Just messing with you. I guess the Tampa announcers need to call her other son Joshua, not Josh. Heck why not first, middle, last.

Denis Santana started the year hot, but has been hot garbage since about the end of June. Nathaniel Lowe (still hate calling him that lol) is having one of the most underrated seasons across baseball. He does play an average 1st base, but you don't pay first baseman to win Gold Gloves, you pay them to hit and he is HITTING.

Idea situation would be to have Lowe primarily DH and play 1B occasionally. I would definitely sign him to a long term deal. His batting average is almost .040 higher than our second place guy, while hitting as many HRs as Garcia and Semien

By the way looking at our offensive stats is pretty brutal. Semien is 4th in BA on the team hitting .238. Jeez

In terms of average, yes our offense looks mundane. But look at slugging, OPS and OPS+, our top five guys are all having solid to good seasons. I would expect Semien and Seager to hit closer to the .275 mark in terms of average though, over the course of their contracts (especially once the shift gets seriously regulated). Seager in particular is having a great season slugging the ball, but it does bring up the fact that we need one more bat than can slug. Even if they bat .250, we need another guy who can slug .450+ and hit 25+ homers.

Then our Lowe would be David Nathaniel Lowe Jr.

I know it's not as bad as it looks on paper. I just wish we had like….. let's say 4 guys hitting above .250

That home run by Lowe was sick. Just exploded off the bat and the Rockies fans were like "aww ****".

Oh yeah - Martin was filthy today. Wish he'd gone longer than 6, but no reason to stretch him out with that lead.

Yep. Needed to see more pop from him this year. He has delivered.

If you ever get the chance to visit Denver and take in a Rockies game, I highly recommend it. Yes, the stadium is a little dated and dingy by now, by very friendly towards opposing team fans. And the weather is spectacular.

I was getting ready to say trip to Chicago is a must but it's early April. Wrigley sucks in early April.

Boston for 4th of July is a maybe

San Francisco in early August looks good too.

You never know about San Francisco weather. Mark Twain said something to the effect of "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco".

And we have always shied away from San Francisco because of that. May need to give it a try this year.

Lowe is an Arb1 next year and is one of the guys that will serve an Arb4. I forget what they call it.

At 27, we have him for 4 more years of team control. If we sign him, it likely won't be until after another year or two, I would think.

It's on my list for sure, especially with the Summer temps there. Been too busy with my own kids games over the Summer time for a number of years now, but in a couple of more years I'll have more time to see some different parks.

Night games can get pretty cold there, even in the Summer. Just make sure to bring a sweatshirt or jacket.

We made it to Candlestick, but haven't been to the new park yet, but I think it gets cold there too.

So what kind of haul could we get for somebody with that much team control in a trade? Call me crazy, but Lowe and a minor league middle infielder or two might be the ticket to upgrading our pitching staff.... assuming we could plug Jung in at 1B (and he can stay healthy of course).

Tksymm7

I get what you are going for here, but Jung has played almost no first base his entire career going back to Tech. I highly doubt they would up and trade Lowe and stick Jung at first going into next season, that feels negligent.

I like what Lowe is doing this season a ton and wouldn't trade him personally, because you can go after some good pitchers in FA this offseason. But if you could get a Shane Bieber level of pitcher, or a young guy in the MLB who profiles as an ace (Dustin May, McClanahan, Baz) I would at least entertain the conversation.

The only way you trade Lowe at this point is to get a bonafide #1 type starting pitcher, because it would take giving up some real stud players to get one.

Short of doing that, I don't think Lowe should be traded.

I think Jung played a couple rehab games this year at 1B, but mostly at 3B. I think he is going to stay at 3B.

Lowe is a cheap 1B which allows us to spend more on SP.

If you go back to the Rule V article I posted a few days ago, I think there are some good nuggets by Jamey N.

In terms of Org... the next hurdle is Rule V considerations. Jamey suggests moving a bunch of our Rule V guys to SD for Blake Snell. Snell is on for 2023 for $16.6M.

SD gets a much need infusion of talent after the Soto trade.
Tex gets a solid SP for next near, without costing us anything, assuming we'd likely not have enough roster spots for all of the guys we need to protect.

I'll dissect the Rule V stuff a little more. Tons to take in.

As a result of Rule V... I'm starting to think maybe it is an inhibitor to sign Perez early. Sign him after the Rule V draft and use that spot to protect another prospect.

I think we need to maximize our organizational talent into fewer and better players, without blocking the high ceiling players.

Very much agree with this take. Our biggest asset is a huge collection of good but not great talent. Our biggest need is high-end talent, particularly pitching. Only natural to find trade partners like that.
Tksymm7
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I couldn't agree more with the opinions above^. Our organizational strength is depth of talent and our biggest need is MLB ready high-end talent. Jung could be superstar, but we don't know that yet and if we're being honest he profiles as more of high-floor guy, although I hope he's freaking stud. Leiter, Rocker, and Evan Carter all profile as having more superstar qualities, but again, we don't know. Go out this offseason and get some DUDES, and with what has happened with Woodward and Daniels, I feel comfortable saying we are likely going to get a really interesting one.

Good ideas, but I'd have to have massive close pin to hold my nose to root for Blake Snell. That's one dude that irritates the hell out of me.

Sometimes I take a different approach to looking at improving a team.

For instance, the idea of replacing productivity (or lack of)

SP:
Hearn (27): 13 GS, 22G, 82.1 IP - 5.25 ERA.
Howard (25): 8 GS, 10 G, 37.2 IP - 7.41 ERA.

RP:
Santana (26): 47 G, 58.0 IP, 5.93 ERA
Richards (34): 32 G, 42.2 IP, 5.27 ERA

Combined: 203.2 IP, 131 ER, 5.79 ERA in what amounts to 22 CG
You could argue Santana was a hopeful, but the other 3... not so much. We just can't go into 2023 with guys like Howard and Hearn getting GSs.

Rangers were 8-6 in Games Hearn started, but he failed to reach the 6th inning in all but 1 GS. That's 3+ IP by the BP in 12 GS.
Rangers were 3-6 in Games Howard started. He never got more than 5.0 IP in 8GS. That's 4+ IP by the BP in 8GS.

Fix that, you fix the BP. Or improve, at least help. If Ragans can get 6+ IP and a 4.50 ERA... we fix some problems.

We are 10GB.

Snell isn't a guy I want. The post above this one mentioned GS and innings pitched. Snell has averaged 5.07 inning pitched per start in his entire career. We need guys, especially an "Ace", that routinely pitches at leat 6 innings. We've got a decent enough BP this year but I think they're gassed because of starters not getting deep enough. Some of that was on Woody. He talked about starters going deeper and then would pull an SP in the 5th inning after 76 pitches.

The problem is, besides Rodon, there isn't a good SP free agent crop this year so we are going to have make a trade I think.

ETA: Rodon is only a FA if he opts out so he may not even be available.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
But, you'd do better with a Snell who gets you consistent GS and 5-6 IP with a 4.24 ERA than what we saw with the repeated "Bullpen Days."

Each BP day was 9IP on the BP.

I agree, I don't necessarily like Snell. The article suggested a trade like that would cost the Rangers prospects that we might not be able to protect from Rule V.

It also might allow you to further trade a guy like Dunning who has 4 yrs of team control. Send Dunning for a LF

Tyler Glasnow (via trade) is a guy I'd be very interested in too. He's coming off of TJ, but he's a stud and Tampa doesn't usually pay their players. I believe they've already made it known that they won't be resigning him as well, or something along those lines.

We basically have a roster that is not going to win a division going away next season, but will have you in the hunt at the trade deadline and primed to make a big move that gets you where you want to be (eg. Lee in '10).
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I like where you are going with that. Having said that, 2023 would be his 1st year back which is usually a recovery year after TJ. You'd be lucky to get 150 IP. I think the recommended in around 100 IP.

But, he'd be a project. It is the kinda Tyson Ross deal JD liked.

2018: 111.2 IP
2019: 60.2 IP
2020: 57.1 IP
2021: 88.0 IP
2022: 0.0 IP

I'd say a 3 yr deal for cheap. That'd get him his 2023 rehab in minors. 2024 would be a risk year and extend his medical coverage. 2025 would be a year for him to breakout.
