I didn't see anything to overturn. NY must have ahd a different view but I don't see how any angle changes that call.

Arihara with the shutout through 6

Well headed into this game, I would've said this would be his last start but now he may have just earned a longer leash.

Hearn is a whole different pitcher out of the bullpen. Closed out the last three innings today: 3IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 5K

I really hope we finish ahead of the Angels. That'd be both hilarious, and a positive step forward. Third in the division, within 10 games of .500 hopefully.

Loved him as a kid. Not sure if he's a good manager or not but he'd be a likable guy

I didn't see this before the game yesterday but Josh Smith was reassigned to AAA Round Rock. He was really struggling at the plate and he won't be getting play time once Jung is up. We need guys like him to be playing well come this offseason so their trade value can be as high as possible.

In regards to Mark DeRosa, I don't care either way. Most clubs are run by GM's and analytical departments, so we really just need a manager to hold guys accountable day to day while also building and massaging relationships with the players.

Telling. The Rangers are 2-0 since this tweet with Otto and Arihara being the GSers

I seem to recall the Rangers saying after the Trade Deadline, they'd discuss a Martin Perez extension.

Sadly quiet on that front.

This is from 2 months ago:

Bleacher Report projecting about 4yr/$64M. He is 31.

Thoughts on that projection?!

I don't mind the AAV of around 16, but I also don't want to be paying him for four years. Ideally I would sign him for two years, but because baseball is baseball and everyone gets longer contracts than they should, I would do three years max. If he is stubborn on four I'd let him walk and go out and get Carlos Rodon for four to five years.

Two things:

1) it would be absolutely foolish to let Perez just walk

2) Rodon is a real idea, but he still has to opt out of his contract with SF

For that insignificant amount of money I'd be completely fine with 4 years.

Rodon (29) is set for $22M in 2023. If he opts out, it is likely Boras already knows he'll get a $22M AAV. Likely 5-6 years.

Fantasy would put both on the team.

Rodon: 2.89 ERA
Perez: 2.80 ERA
Gray: 3.83 ERA
Otto: 4.66 ERA
Ragans: 5.02 ERA

You trade Dunning and his 4 yrs of team control for a couple prospects during the offseason.

During the season you trade Gray when Leiter or Rocker or Other is ready to be called up, assuming Otto and Ragans are holding-their-own. Get a couple more prospects. I think Gray is a health liability long-term.

Start building your next wave of prospects.

I don't want to let Perez walk either, as he has been a very solid guy to lean on this year and I bet he continues to pitch at a similar level (around a 3.00 ERA) for a few years. But I am tired of paying old guys significant money into their middle and late 30's. Unless Perez turns into Scherzer, Kershaw, Verlander, or Wainwright, I would guess that when he's 35 he will again be an average to below average MLB starter, so that is why I am not a fan of giving him a four year deal.

But if for some reason they do let him walk, they absolutely have to go out and get a Rodon type of pitcher. I personally would like them to go get Rodon even if they sign Perez again, and I fully expect Rodon to opt out of next year in order to secure a long term deal. Rodon is 29, so around two years younger than Perez, and he's a better pitcher who's been at a high level longer than Perez. But yes I agree I don't want Perez to walk if we can help it.

Edit: 16 million isn't that bad as said above, I guess I just think he will push for 20 because again, baseball is baseball and players are over-tenured and overpaid far too often. I'd like the Rangers to get on the Atlanta Braves track and start paying young guys for the years that they will be good, not paying old guys for years that they were good.

Semi-rhetorical question....

Why are Kole Calhoun and Brad Miller both still on the roster? Are we that desperate for left handed .200 hitters?

For Miller, I think he signed a two year contract, so they'd have to eat another year of contract to cut him. Not sure how much money we are talking, probably not enough to justify keeping him on the roster in 2023. Although they did note on the broadcast yesterday that he has been hitting well with 2 outs and men on base, so there's that.

I've got nothing on Calhoun, pretty positive he is on a one year deal. He struggled at the beginning of the season, got hot for about a month or so, and has struggled ever sense. I guess we don't have any LH bats in AAA or AA that are needing a shot at MLB level? I'm all for bring Jung up (RH bat, but who cares) and putting him in the lineup everyday to see how he does.
rbtexan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
S
Yeah, I get all that....I know that baseball has become all about the analytics, but it has never made sense to me to keep a LH bat (for instance) if the guy can't hit. Culberson, for example, at least at some point hit LH pitching really well and justified his existence on the roster with some offense. Just seems to me that if you have a RH hitter tearing it up in the minors like Jung, give him the ABs. Even if he only hits .225-230 against RH pitching, that's still as good as what were getting from Miller/Calhoun.

I guess Moreno finally realized he doesn't know anything about baseball and is willing to let someone else try to build the franchise into a winner.

If only Davis and Simpson would come to the same conclusion instead of cementing us into the cellar.

Moreno may be the dumbest MLB owner there is, and that's saying something.
