2022 Rangers have the second worst record of all time on 1 run differential.

That alone did it. He routinely made horrible decisions with the bullpen.

I have to wonder if his handling of the pitching staff had something to do with it. I noticed in the past few games he started letting the starters go longer/throw more pitches (Perez 100+ last night and likewise Dunning on Saturday). I've been arguing for that all season....he's routinely pulled pitchers early and the bullpen is toast as a result.

Was not expecting this today or even this season but it needed to happen.

So I'm not opposed to Michael Young - he strikes me as a very smart baseball man. That being said, he doesn't have any experience other than being a front office guy for the last - 6 years?

And can a team have a manager and GM with the same last name?

Woodward seemed like a good guy, but he really didn't add anything from his position to the roster. That being said I find the timing a bit strange, but if you were going to fire him anyways I guess it doesn't really matter when it happens

No way in hell we are bringing in someone with zero managing experience. If you do that, may as well stick with Woodward.

My prediction is we go after Madden

Make Colby Lewis player/manager. I am certain he could give us some innings right now at the age of 43 throwing 75 mile and hour fastballs

Maddon will be 69 years old on opening day next year. I doubt we're looking at a guy that probably only has a handful of more years left managing, and Maddon's personality does not strike me as one that would be interested in coming to manage in Texas.

The guy was a steward. No more, no less. He was always gonna get fired. The only surprise is it happened during the season.

Not like Young doesn't have 14 years of MLB playing experience

Woodward was a total disaster, but this is just 1 of about 20 steps this franchise needs to take before fielding a team that doesn't embarrass its fanbase.

But what do I know, I was hoping they would shoot him last year and I was laughed at.

I'm not even sure what a manager does in today's game

The analytics department produces probabilities on all sorts of matchups for the competing teams and dictates what to do. Type of shift, how to pitch guys, where to place the guys in the field - it all comes out of a computer. You just implement what the analytic models say to do.

I guess the manager has the final call, but seems like today's game makes the manager something he used not to be.

Michael Young is one of my favorite Rangers of all time. He is not going to be the next manager

The analytics dept isn't in the dugout making the calls.

Unless something happened behind the scenes, this feels like management is trying to pass the buck for their horrible performance and allowing the farm system to go to crap

That's the next step if the Rangers have a losing season in 2023. You can bet the farm on that

Not sure what your point is here, but the vast majority of MLB managers are former players. Not saying I'm for or against Michael Young but if he's CY's guy then so be it.

I still think he was always going to get the boot when the time came, even more so when Chris Young was hired. GM's like to hire their own guys so they can be in lock step with them.

My point is there are tons of former players with lots of playing experience. That doesn't always translate to being a great manager. Michael Young has been retired for 8 years. Why hasn't been a part of a coaching staff during that time?

Like I said before, there is no way the next manager will not have managerial experience.

Edit: that's not to say that MY couldn't blow them away in an interview, but that would be very shocking if he were selected as the next manager

And the vast majority of MLB managers were not great players.

Look at the managers considered "elite". Tommy Lasorda. Tony LaRussa. Maddon in his day. Billy Martin. Casey Stengel. None of them were exceptional players....Martin was probably the best of them, and he was just an average player.

For whatever reason, being a great player hasn't equated being a great manager. Sure, there's a few exceptions (Gil Hodges) but for the most part they haven't done well. The 1st manager of the Rangers was a pretty good ballplayer....guy by the name of Ted Williams. His high water mark as a manager was his first with the Senators, 86-76. Overall he was 273-364 in 4 seasons (3 Senators, 1 Rangers), which is a .429 win percentage.

Young might make a great manager, I don't know. But historical data suggests that he likely wouldn't.

He's a special assistant to the GM. Here is a list of the people that currently hold that title in the front office. Do you think any of them have any real impact on the decisions of the organization?

Michael Young
Brandon McCarthy
Darren Oliver
Ivan Rodriguez
Colby Lewis
Nick Hundley

I'm not for or against Michael Young as a manager.

But silly to think he couldn't do it. There ain't a whole lot to it. I think Maddon has been one of the few managers in the last 2 decades that you could analytically point out to being worth a significant win share.

MLB managers are 90% about keeping the clubhouse content and motivation. Far different than a NBA or NFL coach that might actually be implementing strategies/rotation/plays.
