I'm on the fence. I assume a trade like that would have to include Leiter which I have no interest in. We'll see.

Duran is probably more "5-tool" than Jung, but Jung's hit ability is darn near elite from what people say. Jung is also supposed to be a great defender. It's at least nice to have both!

Jung absolutely has a great bat. Not a "great" defender at 3rd based on what I've read/heard....I've heard him described as "adequate" defensively. Doesn't have an elite 3rd base arm. Solid, not an error machine....but he's not going to remind anybody of Beltre defensively.

If Lowe were to get traded, Jung would probably be an elite player at first.

Regardless, as long as he's not a liability defensively, his offense will more than make up for not being a gold glove caliber fielder.

Been a pretty disappointing trade deadline so far. Castillo was the only name that has moved the needle.

I apologize in advance for all my stupid questions. I know nothing about baseball. Maybe I should google instead but what does a 4/5 or 2/3 mean?
Yukon,

I'd like to respond to your 3 posts collectively.

First, Baseball is a different sport than most others. Baseball is a social sport. Ask questions. Learn. Most on here are more than happy to give you their opinion. We'll differ, and others will tell me when/where I'm wrong. That's part of it. As you can tell with the Soto trade commentary.

Baseball is a game built on failure. A .250 batting average (25% success) mean the player failed 75%. That player could make millions.

So what you're saying is I can get in early haha

Garcia and heim seem good ya?
Baseball is cyclical. Ups and downs. Rangers are about to be really good for a long stretch and will be fun to watch. Lots of young talent stepping up.

Quote:

I just started watching baseball for the first time in my life when the Aggies were in the SEC tournament. Followed that up with an incredibly thrilling post season. My daughter of nearly 2 years started with wanting to watch "ball". The Aggie season being over I found I had the Bally channel showing all the ranger games. We've been watching the Rangers. I've really started enjoying watching baseball.
Awesome to hear. Playing catch is very therapeutic. So, get her a glove.

Quote:

So let me ask this. Are the rangers a disappointing team to be a fan of? I can back out now
Yes and No.

As your daughter gets older... one of the best things to do (with any sport) is get her emotionally attached to a player. Many of us Rangers fans grew up watching the Rangers and are attached to different players as much as the team.

I learned a good way to get females interested in baseball is to make it personal. Introduce them to players. Heim (27) and Adolis (29) are possibilities. The question for me would be will they be on the team in 5 years when she really starts to recognize them.

Seager (28) and Semien (31) were two big FAs the Rangers signed.

Players like Duran (23) and Taveras (23) are young rookies having success. Duran should be quickly rising in the fan awareness. He looks like a guy that will be clutch and deliver big moments. But then, he could hit a slump and never play in the bigs again.

If you are in DFW... I'd recommend going with the Rangers because you'll be able to take her to games. Frisco is their AA team. You can get great seats there on top of the action and the players are usually pretty approachable. Sidenote... each MLB team has a minor league system comprised of AAA, AA, A+, A, Rk (in descending order).

Enough for now.

I'm glad.

His agent probably told him that every time he says "I really want to stay with the Rangers. It is like home." it lessens other team's interest in him.

I've thrown plenty of opinions out there, but in the end, if the Rangers don't do anything and then extend Perez, I'd consider it a good trade deadline.

If we could trade some of our Rule V guys for SP that are Serfs or younger, I'd be fine with that, as well. We have too many Rule V guys that I'm concerned we could lose 3+.

The Rangers only had 3 players to move - Perez, Moore, and Culberson. Bunch of Rule V guys.

We still have 24 hrs, or so... a flurry could happen.

Castillo only made sense if the Rangers were still in on Soto AND were not expected to extend Perez.

I mentioned early on that JD would likely trade for a Dunning type SP. I said it disparagingly because the GM Speak was that we were in on controllable pitching and long-term upgrades. **wink wink nod nod** It was translated as we're going after Soto and Big SPs possibly to compete for this season.

My comment was that he was likely going after a mid-tier SP that was controllable. Which goes back to the comments about my posts. JD tries to give this appearance of playing a bigger game than he is. He pretends to be at the High Roller table, but in the end, he is just at the swap-meet.

I'm fine with being at the swap-meet, but don't try to give this illusion that you're in on Castillo or Rendon when you know you don't have the money in your pocket. Just go to the $5 Blackjack table. Don't loiter around the $1K Blackjack table when you know you have $5 chips.

I'm not expecting the Rangers to make any huge moves. Having said that, the trade deadline is tomorrow at 6pm. I would expect that the really significant trades (if any) will occur tomorrow, likely in the afternoon.

At this point teams are still waiting for the other side to blink.

I'm still not convinced Soto goes anywhere. If I were buying the Nats, I'd want a player like Soto to market and there is a good chance you could sign him.

We commit to $500 million on two players less than 10 months ago and you're already banging the drum about how JD only shops at the bargain stores?

One day you're lauding a team for "driving up another team's price" on a player by keeping their name in the hat.

Next day you're chastising Daniels for not alerting the media every time they aren't in on a player.

Not sure why you can't understand that a GM alerting the league to their honest financial intentions on every player serves zero purpose.

I think Soto moves in the offseason, but not now. The prospect price is crazy. Anyone willing to pay it is going to want to agree on extension terms. That just seems like way too much to happen in a short window

Most have attributed the $500M to CY not JD.

Am I wrong?

Tell me about the last big purchase JD made before CY.

If CY was responsible for the $500M signings, then logic would lead one to assume that he is making the personnel decisions and not JD.

If that's the case, and JD is no longer doing anything other than approving trades & signings, then isn't it irrelevant what he did or didn't do in the past? This is CY's team now (personnel wise) IMO, and to keep trotting out the same old tired criticisms of JD (as warranted as they may be) is pointless and really kind of silly.

Let's see what else CY does going forward, and quit focusing so much attention to the rear view mirror where JD resides.

Looks like Padres extended Musgrove - 5yr/$100M with no-trade clauses. That could be about where Perez lands.

I'm just surprised that Preller with the Padres was able to negotiate trades at the deadline AND have time to discuss contract extensions. Pretty impressive /tongue in cheek.

You are aware this money isn't coming out of their personal bank account, right?

When JD is shopping with the owners' money, he is only allowed to buy off the bargain shelves -- but when CY is shopping with the owners' money he can spend $500M?

It's all so illogical. Reads like the "Team Nolan" or "Team Daniels" talk of yester-year (which for the most part was just Engel and his brethren looking to generate hot topics for clicks). You're on Team Nolan and a good move is made? It was all Nolan. A bad move? All JD.

If you think Daniels needs to let everyone know his intentions during negotiations, then remind me to always take you up on an offer to play poker.

I'm in the boat that the owners were the ones who decided to go in on free agents this past cycle. They're the money, so they're the ones pushing that.

It's possible that CY is better at the art of persuasion than JD and the owners were willing to open the pocketbook a little wider.

My take:

- JD's issue has been the draft, not FA or trades
- I think ownership largely drove the bus on budget. At the same time, it made no sense to spend when the franchise was on the decline. 1-2 big signings isn't changing your fortune. See Juando and Arod in the early 2000s. May as well set yourself up to draft Leiter and Rocker type talent.

Anytime a GM doesn't "get" a guy they are in talks with, it's chalked up as a loss.

DallasAg knocks/knocked Daniels for claiming we were "in on Rendon" but not actually being in the ballpark of what he ended up getting from Anaheim.

Shouldn't we be praising him for that?

You can try to mis-characterize my comments if it makes you feel better.

You say JD doesn't telegraph his moves, but all he did in 2019 was declare we were going to fill 3B externally. All comments were focused on Rendon. It was a ruse. The new stadium was opening in 2020 and he knew he had to create buzz in order to sell ticket.

Pressure was mounting because the Rangers got a $500M bond passed for a new stadium and immediately dismantled the team. You can't deny that everyone on here and in DFW that follows the Rangers were excited about a raised payroll expected to reach $165M and become competitive.

I said multiple times that they would land at $140-145M. And they did.
It was well known there was a 7yr offer on the table to the tune of $200M+

It was later reported that the Rangers never really made the offer to the Agent. Why would a GM (JD) go to an agent and offer less years and less money if the GM was serious about signing the player?!

Yes... I'm still a bit pissed that the Rangers played the fans and JD was the front-man. They knew with a new stadium, they didn't need to field a competitive team and pretended like they tried. They did the same thing with a SP that season. They came in at 3yr/less AAV than the 4yr already known on the table.
