Why am I so happy with the yankees, mets & dodgers all being eliminated from contention?

I'd be surprised that NYC doesn't explode when they finally realize their teams have been eliminated.
I'm running the NYC Marathon in 2 weeks. There were people in my running group going on and on about there possibly being a NYY vs. NYM World Series. They didn't like it very much when I said Yankee stadium wasn't gonna be hosting any games in early November.

One key addition for WS that we didn't have - hoping Gary "windmill"Pettis is back healthy. With him at 3rd, Alvarez wouldn't have missed chance to tag to third on Bregman's long fly to right, and maybe Altuve doesn't overslide 3rd and get out later on. Luckily it didn't matter as Alvarez ended up scoring and of course we won. Pettis is a steady hand on that 3rd base line.

Some fan talk out of Philadelphia:

Quote:

'm not trying to be a poor sport here, but 7 consecutive post season wins? 4 of them against the Yankees? I'm not saying it isn't possible, but...
Quote:

Astros are underratedly inconsistent. Altuve and Yordan couldn't buy a hit this series and those are their best two hitters. Their just isn't super consistent and the hot hitting will steamroll them this series
Quote:

EXACTLY. 106 wins? cool. Haven't lost in the postseason? great.

WE HAVE HARPER. Field leveled.
Quote:

Take 1 of the games in Houston and the Astros are in BIG TROUBLE. This is not a place you want to play as a visitor with your season hanging in the balance. If they come back to Philly 1-1, look out.
Quote:

We definitely need Wheeler and Nola to lead from the front. Astros haven't played here since 2017. Different team, different place, but this stadium and this crowd can absolutely un-nerve even the best. Your only starter that has ever pitched here is Verlander, and that was once. Your bullpen hasn't done well here at all. Stanek got knocked around, Maton got knocked around, Montero got knocked around, and don't get us started on Hector Neris.

The Phillies, like the Astros, haven't lost at home all post-season. One game breaking serve can be a problem. Ask the Braves and Padres all about that.

Philadelphia isn't a hostile environment. It's THE hostile environment. Even announcers are amazed at how hostile (and well educated on players' faults) the crowd is. Banging trash cans is NOTHING. Get ready.
Quote:

Astros dont scare me, they havent faced adversity all year, waltzed their way to 100 wins and waltzed their way through the playoffs. This series will be a repeat of the 2014 WS between the Tigers and Giants. Phils in 5.
Quote:

I can't stop thinking about how ironic it was when Phils captured last playoff spot in Houston. Houston put up a congrats Philadelphia on their scoreboard. Now we get to let them do it again potentially in a Game 6 or 7.
Quote:

The Astros are so ****ed lmfao
Quote:

Useless Yankees couldn't even win a game to help us out and burn out the Astros pitching a little bit.
Quote:

If ya'll could go ahead and beat the cheaters in the World Series, that would be super.
Quote:

I was kind of hoping for the poverty Yankees to pull off an unlikely ALCS win so we could get revenge for 2009, but oh well. I guess we'll just have to continue the tradition of NL East teams beating the Astros in the World Series.
Quote:

I just cannot be mad if we lose, but for the love of god if we can beat the Astros that would mean everything and then some.
Quote:

The Astros are a better team on paper. But so were the Cardinals. And the Braves. And the Padres.

This lineup can beat anyone, and Wheeler and Nola can shut down an offense even as good as the Astros. And we've got destiny on our side.

And my favorite so far:
Quote:

You know, after years of getting boo'd by everyone in both the regular season and deep in the playoffs, I think they might be better prepared for playoffs in Philly better than anyone. We better think of some truly unacceptable **** to scream at them.

Unless Pettis reached down and stopped Altuve, he would still have over slid. I think it was the goal from the beginning, catch the 3rd base napping and Tuve running full speed. The minute he had to alter his path because of the SS, he was out of position for the slide and just moving too fast.

Agreed. I was actually thinking Altuve should have leaned into the SS to make contact and guarantee the base from obstruction

Philthy fans are horrible across all sports, I believe they are on par or maybe worse than Jankee fans, so our guys better be prepared.

The fans believe they can't lose, and it's simply because of Harper. If we can shut him down, hoping we are going in up 2-0 because they are right, we don't want to go into Philly tied 1-1, and take game 3 in Philly we will have crushed their souls. Which is all I ever want for any Philly sports franchise.

They should be confident - they've been on an amazing run.

Right now, I don't have a clue how the series is going to go.

This is the only comment that stuck out to me:
Astros are underratedly inconsistent. Altuve and Yordan couldn't buy a hit this series and those are their best two hitters. Their just isn't super consistent and the hot hitting will steamroll them this series

Altuve and Yordan didn't hit well and we scored 4, 3, 5, and 6. If those two get hot for the entire series and Pena, Bregman and Yuli continue their postseasons....

They also seem to forget they have to face the pitching they will have seen all postseason.

Harper and how hot he is does make me nervous though. Just can't have anyone on base when he's up to bat.

They haven't been in the playoffs in over a decade then went and upset a couple of teams. They're on a crazy run and the fan base think they're unbreakable.

One thing, they don't have is depth. Not in the lineup. Not in the rotation. Not in the bullpen. We just need to lean on them and grind. If it goes 6 or 7, they won't be able to keep up without lesser players stepping way way way up. Nola & Wheeler can only make 4 starts. You let us see Alvarado, Dominguez, & Robertson 2, 3, or 4 times and they'll be figured out. We've seen it time and time again in a 7 game series.

Remember this post if things don't go perfectly the first 2-3 games.

Some early betting lines, randomly sourced:

-Title odds
  • Astros sweep +750
  • Astros in five, six or seven games +400
  • Phillies sweep +1400
  • Phillies in six or seven games +600

-MVP (no love for the ALCS MVP)
  • Yordan Alvarez +600
  • Bryce Harper +700
  • Justin Verlander, Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman +1000
  • Jose Altuve and Kyle Schwarber +1300 odds
  • Aaron Nola +1500

Houston is a -185 favorite over the Phillies (+160), which carries an implied probability of 64.9%.

I completely agree with this. This team can grind, and if it gets to the bullpen early in the series, going to be long for them.

Gotta focus on keeping Harper in check and no one on base before Schwarber.

When you get up at 5am like I do everyday for work it adds up. Also being on the east coast doesn't help
How was HotD yesterday? I plan to watch it tonight, my wife never even mentioned it last night.

In fact she ended up joining me on the couch for the last few innings of the game yesterday. I made sure she didn't have her phone, her favorite past time is photo/video me and send it in family group chats. Especially if I change shirts or seating spots for better team assistance

You forgot their defense. It's awful

And as we saw last night in close tight high leverage games you have to be solid on defense because as we've seen in years past you can't give the Astros extra outs because they will make you pay.

I really think we're gonna see their lackluster defense play a big role in a game or two.

Yankees have played 52 best of seven playoff series in franchise history (technically one was best of 9)

They have only been swept 5 times.

2022 - Houston, ALCS
2012, Detroit, ALCS
1976, Cincinnati, WS
1963, Los Angeles, WS
1922, New York Giants, WS*

I had to triple-take when I saw that this series was actually 4-0-1 with 1 game ending in a tie on account of darkness, although it appears both owners were cool with the tie because it meant more money from the gate. The two teams both played at The Polo Grounds because Yankee Stadium was being built at the time.

Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis, who would likely have carved into Rob Manfred's skull with a machete and drank his blood, called them on their bluff and ordered all of the gate, $120,000, given to World War I charities.

See, but that's why I would still pitch Javier befor LMJ. He's more likely to be ready to go in a game 7 scenario all things considered.

The way I see it, games 1 & 2, and 5 & 6 will be coin flip type games, and we'll be relatively heavy favorites in a game 3, 4, and 7. Gotta win one of the first two and I like our odds of ending up 3-1 or at least 3-2
