Let's not act like Pena is anywhere near Correa offensively this season.

Pena is a serviceable replacement because he plays a very strong SS and is surrounded by a very good lineup.

I'm not pulling the stats but how does Carlos season averages with us compare to what he did this year in Minn and vs what Peña did this year.

Correa

Career 129
2022 Minny 137
2017 Hou 152 (best season by far, but only 109 games)

Pena

2022 Hou 96 (4% below league avg)
2021 AAA 126

It's not even a little close.

You can go figure it out if you'd like. They're not going to tell a different story.

For all he has accomplished, for all the leadership he provided the organization coming out of the sign-stealing scandal, he deserves to go out on his own terms. Crane couldn't justify parting with him, even if he wanted to.

The only way this is remotely true is if we win it all this year, and Dusty sticks to his guns about "needing" to go out with two in a row. If the first condition is not fulfilled, we owe it to ourselves to move on.

Id say "not even a little close" is a bit too strong of a statement.... Especially since one is making 34 million more and without that anchor we can afford more additions (Like our CY starting pither)

Pena needs to walk more. He's as good or better in almost every other category. He just didn't hit as many singles as CC

Correa's rookie year he hit 22 HR and had 68 RBI and hit .279 in 99 games. That kind of offensive explosion suggests he had the chops of being a 35 HR, 100 RBI guy every year, but he never hit more than 26 HR and never drove in more than 96 during his Houston days. And he was constantly hurt. 50 missed games in 2017, 50 in 2018, 87 in 2019.
If he hadn't gone off in the 2020 post-season, I'm not sure a lot of people would have been upset if he had stayed or left after 2021.

Pena had a really nice year under multiple lenses: Playing for a team that wins a ton, playing a really high profile defensive position, and taking over for a beloved big-game player. Really interested to see what Pena gives in the playoffs, because I'm fearful it'll be too much for him and he'll strikeout 16 times in 19 at bats.

However if he can hit .255 with 20 HR and 70 RBI a year, I'll take that over and over.

obviously the Astros need Pena to improve at the plate from his rookie year.

perhaps a modest goal for next season would be to raise his OPS into the .750 range

Heard from a friend who golfed with someone in the know. Couple things were tossed out. Baker is done. Espada takes the job. Click is removed and hinch takes over as GM. Brantley is the number 1 OF target. Also if somehow it worked, Correa wants to come back and Peña moves to center.

Could all be total BS, but I'm just saying.

The way it was conveyed was he wants to come back and if it did somehow work, that is what would happen. It wasn't a statement saying he thinks this happens.

So that is what the meeting between Hinch and Correa was really about in Houston during the off-season….I'll go to Minny for a year, you get the GM job and I will be your first big signing……

Baker gone: Good
Espada: Good
Click gone: ehh
Hinch GM: Good
Brantley back: Good, the lower $ the better, I think it has to be less than 8mil/ year if it happens
Correa back: I think his ego is too big for that
Pena to center: I just don't see that. If him in the OF was a foreseeable proposition he would have been moved instead of Leon

Hinch as a GM with no front office experience. What a trainwreck that could be.

If we weren't interested in paying Correa last year, why on earth would we pay him a year later aka 1 less year of his prime?

Pena, an elite defensive SS, makes zero sense in CF.

Wasn't he a GM in ARZ prior to managing?

But yeah that sounds pretty out there regardless.

Not a GM, but some experience, I guess.

After the 2005 season, the Arizona Diamondbacks hired Hinch as their manager of minor league operations.[1] Even while playing, he was planning his post-playing career. He went so far as to go to the 2003 general manager's winter meetings to look for future job opportunities and contacts. In July 2006, Baseball America named him one of baseball's "10 to watch" in the next 10 years for his promise as a farm director and future general manager. In August 2006, the Diamondbacks named Hinch director of player development.

You don't stand behind someone you trusted and got hung out to dry by. Crane has made nothing but really solid moves from the get go. His pride and joy was tarnished and when the sh*t hit the fan, he got splattered. Who wouldn't be pissed and feel betrayed.
