Is he gonna be the 2022 Jake Meyers?
I'm not seeing the comparison. Jake was an older guy who kind of came out of nowhere. He was so damn good the org traded away a big league to make room for him.

Leon is a top prospect still acclimating to professional baseball after sitting out for a while. He's improving and getting hot, but he hasn't matched 2022 Meyers. I don't see room on the roster for a call up this season either.

If Jake doesn't establish himself in '22 then it should be wide open in '23.

I agree with all of that.

I also know that everyone was so sad about losing Myles Straw because he's a good dude and a hard worker and a clubhouse glue guy and I remember there was a lot of drama when he was traded...

But Myles Straw sucks and we are much better for having moved on from him.

I doubt the trade happens but if it does, everyone is going to be just fine the second they realize the new guy gives us a better chance to win.
At the end of the day, even though I side with Astros players/coaches and opposing coaches in advocating for Maldy's value, I'd be totally cool if we deal for Contreras.

But comparing Maldy's influence on this team to Myles Straw is deeply unfair. If Maldy's only contribution was that he worked hard and was a good clubhouse guy, I'd be totally with you. Good riddance. But he's had a very direct connection with the success of our elite pitching staff (players/coaches words, not mine) and tinkering with that is something that I'm sure our nerds are not taking lightly.

But if our nerds conclude that the pros of Contreras more than offset the loss of what Maldy brings, then LFG. I'm in. I just think there's a high degree of underselling Maldy's value around here today.
I don't think the primary reason the Astros are looking at Contreras is for Maldy. I think it's for Yordan and Brantley at DH with the ability to give Maldy relief.

If the Astros move for Contreras, I believe it's because the organization doesn't believe the team will have both Yordan and Brantley come postseason.

I believe the organization sees the path for Contreras as mostly DH with the ability to catch 2 games a week.

That may work, but how much does it matter. We're going to get a Contreras for October. If everyone is healthy then Maldonado needs to be the odd man out.

Do you think the organization is trading for Contreras regardless?

Yes, but obviously injuries would put more pressure to get a deal done. Even if they believe they'll both be healthy its a nice piece to keep everyone fresh and share time. Same with Bell or Mancini.

Went to the Water park today, came home to 237 unread messages - figured we had traded Castro and Siri for Juan Soto.

In other news, I picked up Lance in fantasy baseball today, ready for that nasty stuff to get set loose again on the AL!

If they believe Yordan and Brantley are going to be healthy, I think the organization would then look at who is going to cost more to get and who would be most likely to resign for the best deal the following year.

Who do you think that is between Contreras and Bell?

I think it's going to come down to their evaluation of Yordan and Brantley, and if they think those guys will stay healthy, who they will get the best deal on between Contreras and Bell.

At the end of the day, maybe they do both, but I don't see it.

Edit for I think the organization's primary target being Contreras says more about their concern over Yordan and Brantley than it does their value on Maldy.

If we're talking about the future, IMO, they need both 1B and C. Catcher will be cheaper, though. He should also be cheaper to get in a trade.

Two names to look for in the lineup tonight.

Yordan, New Jake.

Let's see just where the hand and elbow are at.

If I were GM I would go after Bell more than Contreras. Bell's bat in the lineup would more than make up for Maldy's lack of offense.I'm not confident that Brantley will be anytime soon and Yordan's hand could be an issue the remainder of the season. I would go for Castillo too in case an injury occurs with any of our current pitchers.

I'm totally fine throwing in the towel on Whitley at this point but not 100% sure I'd deal him for a three month rental. I'd be fine if I woke up tomorrow and saw that hypothetical trade though.

Yordan and New Jake in. Really good signs. I would have placed a small bet on New Jake not playing.

And Tucker getting a day off is not bad.

Didn't Whitley just recently get pulled from a game...is he not hurt? I don't recall hearing what the deal was there

Something with his shoulder or bicep, just a strain. Nothing major

For you other ballpark adventurers.

I am taking the family to Coors fields in mid-August. What section would you suggest?
