Go get a hybrid 1B/LF. Bell or Cooper. Bell is better but will cost more. He also hits into a crap ton of DPs. 18 already this season and 22 last year.

If the Reds called and said Castillo is yours if you're willing to part with Brown + some marginal prospects, do you do it?

I guess I'm to the point where I'd strongly consider. Agree that I'd rather see Urquidy dealt than Brown. I'd have to think about LuAce. To me, Javier's playoff flexibility (ability to start, bridge and even multi-inning close) makes him a bit too valuable to include in a Castillo deal.
I do agree that Javier is the best of that batch but he has also showed a lot of streakiness. It would need to really lessen the haul to include him. Urquidy would be first dealt for me.

I'm going to be vulnerable here and just say it, I cant stand to watch Garcia pitch. That motion is such a pain in the azz that it makes the loss easier for me.

I cant agree with this, but I do like watching him pitch more when there's a runner on base and he does the abbreviated rock the baby. I absolutely refuse to pitch with him on MLB the show because it takes too long.

Garcia and Urquidy both sort of suffer from limited effectiveness, too.

For their careers:

Garcia - 3rd time facing order, batting average jumps from .220 to .260. 6th inning BA jumps to .280
Urquidy - 2nd time facing order .240, 3rd time .260.

I can say I prefer someone who works quickly, but I have no issue with his movements. While he's the slowest of the Astros starters, he's 60th slowest pitcher in baseball. Stanek is slower (24th). LuACE actually works much more slowly with runners on when he isn't rocking the baby.

Completely off topic but I got curious this morning and did some digging.

Albert Pujols has played on the same field as Jesse Orsoco (born in 1957) as well as Michael Harris and Wander Franco (born in 2001).

Think of it this way. He played against a guy who was born when Eisenhower was President, and he also played against a guy who wasn't born yet when Dale Earnhardt died.

Today's the 36-year anniversary of my favorite regular-season game ever. July 20, 1986 - Astros 9, Mets 8 in 15 innings.

The Mets came to the Dome for a 4-game series. The Mets were already 59-25 on the year, cruising in the NL East up 13.5 games on second-place Montreal. The Astros were 47-42, two games behind the Giants for first in the West and coming off a very blah 14-15 June.

The Thursday opener was an embarrassment, a 13-2 Mets win that got them to 60-25. The Astros were up 1-0 through six, then gave up all 13 runs in the last 3 innings.

On Friday night, Bob Knepper pitched a 3-hit shutout for a 3-0 victory. It was the first time the Mets had been shutout in the first 86 games of the year. They'd only be shutout 4 times in the whole regular season.

On Saturday night, in front of the Astros biggest crowd of the season (44K), the good guys blew a 4-0 lead in the top of the ninth, then won it 5-4 on a walkoff home with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th by Craig Reynolds.

That night, of course, Tim Teufel, Ron Darling, Bob Ojeda, and Rick Aguilera got into the scuffle with the off-duty cops at Cooter's and got arrested.

Sunday, in a 5 hour 29 minute game, the Astros won 9-8 on a walkoff fielder's choice with the bases loaded by Kevin Bass.

Amazingly, some guy on YouTube has the whole damn original broadcast from Channel 20 online edited for commercials. If you don't have 5 hours to commit today to watching this, skip to the last 5 minutes and revel in the joy of watching Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez, and Davey Johnson collectively piss their pants whining to the umpire about the last play of the game.

The thing that sucks is, lets say we go and sweep the Mariners, the media and Seattle fans will chalk it up to coming off the All star break.
No matter what!
Epstein didn't do, you know, the thing...

Royals released Brad Peacock

Looks like he was in their system on a MiL deal

Quote:

Unfortunately, injuries limited him to just 2 1/3 innings in 2020 and he wasn't able to get things back on track last year. He signed a minor league deal with the Royals prior to this season and has thrown 38 1/3 excellent innings with the Storm Chasers. He has a 1.64 ERA on the year, along with a 27.6% strikeout rate, 9.8% walk rate and 50% ground ball rate. Despite that solid showing, the Royals have decided to cut him loose, perhaps to give his innings to younger up-and-coming pitchers.

He should be on a competing team

Agree

Not sure we have a spot for him but he seems like he should be somewhere pitching meaningful innings.

Always liked Peacock. Check that...I liked Peacock after he stopped sucking. His turnaround was nothing short of miraculous and I'll always root for his success (unless it's against the Good Guys).

Sign him to a minors deal. If he does well, call him up in September with one of the extra spots to see what he can do.

Yep

Or sign him to MiL deal with the understanding that if things work out and we clear space at the trade deadline he'll be looked at for a spot on the big league club.

Basically stash him in Sugar Land on a MiL deal and if we move someone he slots in.

Did anyone purchase All Star gear? My son was interested in a jersey, but went down to the team store today and couldn't find any. I looked on MLB shop website and they had all star jerseys for a bunch of teams, but nothing for the Astros. The closest thing they had for the Astros was a t-shirt in the same charcoal color scheme.

The Astros and their 1 gal bag and 1 bottle of water per person make it bearable.

But yeah it's a crazy.

One thing too...If you have kids there's no reason not join Astro Buddies and use the four tickets included with the membership.

My dad and I were at that game. It was a thing of beauty. Though I wish Bob had saved that one for the NLCS.

You aren't used to it at this point? We will get zero respect from everyone, especially the media, the latter half of the year, when we sweep the darling Jays, beat the Yankees in 5, and when we destroy the Dodgers all while we are booed along the way. F 'em all.

Exactly, screw 'em all.

When we finish with the best record in baseball, and then we run right through the playoffs and series - they can all EAD.

Once we get back to healthy I don't really see how anyone can doubt we are the best team.

One potential team rumored to be after soto is the White Sox. That would be perfect because there is no way that team can overcome the awfulness that is Tony Larussa. He'll never win anything there.
