Classic Keuchel game where he can't locate. His cutter looks like a BP fastball. Also, the White Sox defensively played like trash that sequence. Anderson had what looked like to errors at SS, and Abreu missed a groundball.

11 true balls were called strikes, and 7 balls were called in his established zone. Consistently inconsistent.

I've seen a few comparisons like this implying that the balls are not traveling nearly as far as they were in years past. It is interesting how far down offenses across the league are so far this year

While this is very likely possible on the ball (and I think the MLB can't stop stepping on their own dick and probably did mess with the balls), but no way those two were hit the same.

Maybe it has to do with the spin on the ball, but no way those two hits maintained the same velocity. They look significantly different. I guarantee you Donaldson's had a crazy amount of top spin on it.

I'm not sure what the answer is on the dip in average, but a lot of the cause should be pointed at the quest for slugging. It's all about launch angles. You can point to the shift, but maybe batters should take advantage of the open fields and learn to take what the defense is giving them. Bunting is a completely lost art.

Not just because he was a HOF hitter, but will we ever see a Tony Gwynn again?

Combo of a lot of things.
Pitchers are filthier than ever.
The data on how to beat guys is readily available.
The data on where guy hit is readily available.
The balls are dead compared to 17-19.
The rosters are expanded so more available arms.
Defenders are more athletic than ever. Guys like Pena and Siri are stealing hits regularly.
Hitters are smarter too. They know a 40% shot of a bunt single the other way isn't better than a 10% chance of single + 10% chance of a double + 5% chance of a home run + 5% chance of a walk if they just hit away normally.

4 years ago Altuve had a roughly 40% chance. Injuries and covid have decimated that. He's 32 and needs more than 1200 hits. I don't see it happening unless he plays into his 40s. And even then it will be tough.

Yeah, I'm not sure I see a player on that list get there. Time, injuries, shifts, dead ball, no steroids, etc.
