Thinking of making the trip there this summer. Curious for those who've been to Tampa what the area is like around the field. Good place to hang out and walk around, or is it pretty isolated?

Do you need a car in Tampa to get around? Wife and I prefer places like Boston where subway is easy, fun to walk around everywhere, etc. Generally I prefer to not rent a car if I don't have to.



Going off the same kinda questions above what would be some other great places to visit. Keep in mind we'd be following the yankees so generally A.L. ballparks. I have it somewhat narrowed down to Tampa, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, or Minnesota.

FWIW New York would be where we would go but the COVID crap is making impossible as of right now since we aren't jabbed.

Baltimore is a fantastic baseball atmosphere but don't wonder around too much after dark. Not a great city. There's a couple bars right across the street from the ballpark that are a lot of fun. Pickles Pub is the name of one. And the harbor is cool to visit during the day.

Baltimore is a great baseball venue, the surroundings are awful. Definitely recommend a day game there.

Pittsburgh is top notch. Several bars across the street from PNC, and you can walk across the bridge to downtown for all kinds of other stuff.

I might be in the minority, but I found the Mets to be a more enjoyable experience than the Yankees. Bonus for NY is the train/subway drops you off right outside the stadium at both places.

Minnesota wasnt bad when I went, however that was 16 years ago. Their new park is supposedly nice but cant vouch for its surroundings.

Philly is a cool stadium, the open concourses are great there. You can also take the train right outside their pro athletics area.

I think I've read that Tampa's park is in a terrible location away from the city and only accessible by one route. I'm sure trip advisor or something can confirm that for you.

Ditto on Camden Yards being a great environment in the daytime. Hard to beat Boston, Chicago, Frisco, San Diego for me among the others I've been to.

I have been to St. Petersburg, which is where you're going to see the Tampa Bay Rays play.

It is a LONG way from the airport to the south end of St. Pete where the stadium is. Like a 30 minute drive. With no traffic. On a workday? 45 minutes to an hour.

If you want to stay in St. Pete, the are east of the stadium is really cool with lots of bars, restaurants and night life. The beaches are all right there. Just depends on what you want to do while in the area.

A day game at Target Field in the summer is fantastic. Great experience back in 2016.

As a baseball fan I could never say "Don't go to Camden Yards" as every true fan should. But if a night game my advice is stay VERY close to the stadium.

Did Pittsburgh in August and highly recommend. Stay in downtown and walk the bridge to the game and back. Sit behind home even in upper deck and enjoy the view.

Yep. I went to a night game and hung out near the stadium afterwards and was fine. My hotel was about 20-30 minutes away in a much better area. Can't remember exactly where. Just don't wander off. It gets rough.

The Inner Harbor, as well as the nearby Fells Point/Canton/basically all the neighborhoods wrapping around the harbor, are safe areas, some are plenty touristy, with a lot of bars, food etc. It gets a little rough as you wonder away from those neighborhoods.

If you're spooked by Baltimore, luckily, day games are usually pretty awesome at Camden Yards.

Pittsburgh is definitely do-able without a car. Stay at the Wyndham by Fort Duquesne there's a ton of bars and restaurants close by and you just walk across the river to PNC.

My first time in Pittsburgh as an adult was when I was living & working in DC. A fellow Ag and I drove up for the A&M-Pitt game in 2002. I was expecting a rusted-out, grimy city but it was really cool. They've done a lot of work revitalizing downtown and there's all kinds of cool, old school art deco architecture and stuff going back to the Gilded Age with Carnegie and so forth. Folks were surprisingly friendly for Yankees in all the bars we went to. Especially when my buddy and I got lost and ended up in some pretty divey locals-only places.

Agree, no need for a car. Stay downtown with lots of bars and restaurants. Can walk or Uber over to the Heinz History Center to learn all about Western PA and Western PA sports museum in same building.

I am in Pittsburgh very often for work and yes its a much cooler place than people expect. Downtown area is very walkable, stuff to do, great park. Would be an easy one for sure and definitely worth visiting as well.

good to know. Thinking Pitt might be our stop this summer, depending if the schedule doesn't get jacked around and revised because of a delayed start to the season.

If you have kids, might be worth it to join their kids club. Comes with some tickets and some other goodies. Think we took four people to a game for around 30 bucks.

I visited Tropicana Field several years ago.

the scariest part was driving on the Skyway Bridge after the game.

I plan to go see the Rangers in Colorado this summer. Want to go to Pittsburgh someday.

I'm always pleasantly surprised when i visit Cincinnati, decent downtown area around the ballpark, casino is nice too. Not sure how "family friendly" it is, but it's worth looking at, again, if you're just staying downtown for the weekend. Yankees host the Reds in 2022, but don't visit the Great American Ballpark, unfortunately.

The area around Coors Field is fun. Lots of fun bars and if it's the right time of year the weather should be fantastic. We stayed in an AirBNB about 15 minutes away.

Do we know the away interleague schedule yet? Cause Pittsburgh would be in the other league.

I used to go to several series in Seattle every year. Loved it. But things have changed quite a bit in what used to be a beautiful city.

thats the problem...If the lockout drags on schedules could get revamped. Makes planning tough right now.
