MLB chalking it up to COVID protocols that resulted in Rawlings (which is owned by MLB) sending out excess supply from previous years. A few notable points to this story:
- Clubs and Players were not informed of this, though you did have a few players speaking out about balls feeling different
- This was only discovered because someone independent of baseball examined balls used across multiple games in multiple parks
- With that in mind, you can probably expect this to be a talking point in the upcoming labor discussions, which were predicted a few months ago to already be heading toward a work stoppage
- If you want to get really tin-foily, it's worth pointing out that this is the first year that MLB was partnered with gambling organizations. But more likely, that's more a coincidence and this is another case of the Manfred regime being incompetent.
