How long do you want to ignore this user?
CoachRTM said:

I understand that some on this thread hate him, but the players seem to like him and we won the West again. Why would we think Dusty would be out? (unless it's just his time to retire if we win the whole thing)

Some on this thread also said that we "Hinch'ed" games and hated him, but would now take him back in a heartbeat.

(Edit : I'm not giving my opinion on whether or not he *should* be back, just asking what kind of indications, at all, have we been given that he wouldn't be?)
because they won it in spite of him, not because of him. he's always making the wrong decision, and when it doesn't blow up in his face, people think he's a genius...or at least a good manager, lol.

He grinds bullpens to dust.

All of these are reasons why you think he *shouldn't* be back. Again, what indications have we ever been given that he wouldn't? The players like him, I haven't heard anything negative from Click about him, etc.

There's a reason he's won a division title for a record 6 teams and hasn't won a WS. This year that trend ends but it does exist.

And not to mention he was fired after winning the division for WAS.

Ok, I'm going to drop this because it's playoff day, but you guys are missing my point. I understand the reasons why this thread WANTS him to not be back next year.

What I don't understand is why anyone would be surprised that the news is coming out that he'll probably be back next year.

Anyway - on to focusing on the White Sox and the start of a WS run

The biggest indication we have is that he was never extended at any time during the season, or before it.

Not sure what's going on with the second part, but the first part is definitely true. I don't know how the players do it when I get this nervous just watching as a fan.

It's hard for me to imagine Dusty will be back next year but I guess you never know.

I don't put too much stock into his performance/decision-making this year. Sure there were some questionable decisions but overall we performed well enough. We won the division and have all our weapons rested and ready to go for October. That's the main regular season goal when we start the year.

It's more about fit into the organizational culture. The Astros run on analytics and the baseball ops nerds guide alot of decision making. Dusty is old school and allegedly doesn't work that way.

Hinch was close to an ideal Astros manager because he was a great intermediary between the baseball ops nerds and the players. Most of the best managers in baseball right now serve that facilitator role. Our Dusty replacement will probably fit that mold. Maybe it's Espada. Maybe it's someone external. We'll see.

Crane hired him (without the input of a GM) because it was good PR at a time when the Astros really needed good PR. And not just cuz he was an unemployed black manager. He gave the image of manager who wouldn't tolerate shenanigans and helped clean up the image of the team. I'm guessing Dusty also added value in helping the players deal with all the road animosity this year.

Dusty's utility with the club seems to have come and gone. I don't imagine that Click would choose to bring him back if the decision was entirely up to him. But with that said, maybe Dusty has embraced the analytics behind the scenes more than has been let on. And maybe his experience has added value to the Astros' decision making processes in some way.

It would be awesome to see Dusty's career end with a ring though.

I haven't been around for much lineup talk recently, so apologies if all this has been hashed out.

Tucker is our best hitter and seems like he needs to be hitting near the top of the order.

Castro is much much better at hitting than Maldy and seems like he needs to be getting more reps behind the plate. Will he start today?

Chas vs Jake in CF is wildly close statistically. Not sure who we start. My gut says Chazzy baseball will shine under the October lights.

If anyone opposes this lineup, fight me.

1) Altuve
2) Tucker
3) Bregman
4) Alvarez
5) Correa
6) Brantley
7) Yuli
8) Chas
9) Castro

I can't see any way Machete doesn't start. His arm and catching/preparation is too valuable. They will live with the lower offensive output.

I like Jake in CF but I think it's close. I just think he's the better defender and it's a big field out there.

I agree. Maldonado is trash at the plate. However, the consensus based on stars on this thread is that Maldonado's experience behind the plate is worth another .050 or so points on his batting average.

Maldy definitely starts. Chisox are a running team with Robert and Anderson.

Haven't seen the ALDS roster announced, anyone have that info?

As much as that makes sense. I think Dusty goes back to what he feels comfortable with

Altuve
Brantley
Bregman
Alvarez
Correa
Tucker
Gurriel
Chas (better against righties)
Maldonado

No Castro
No major shakeups even if they make sense

Plus Lance is pitching

No way in hell does Lance throw to Castro. Maldy is his dude all the way

If yall haven't noticed Dustyu has quietly platooned Jake and Chas for lefty-righty matchups.

Both hit lefties better, but Jake hits righties much worse than Chas.

However, Jake is the better fastball hitter. Maybe that gives him the edge over Chas today.

I understand the preferred pitcher/catcher dynamics and that's certainly worth something. But the fact that Castro's OPS+ (118) is more than double Maldy's (58) should factor into the decision too IMO.

Agree that Maldy will likely get the start today. Just wonder how deeply Dusty and the organization are considering more full time PT for Castro.

Hadn't we seen Brantley out of the 7 hole after he came back from the DL?

I wonder if he bats in the back third of lineup

Farmer1906

I did a quick check, Lance has thrown to Castro 3x this year.

April 14 vs DET: 3.2 IP, 6 ER, 3 K, 3 BB
Jun 26 @ DET: 5.1 IP, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB
Jul 2 @ CLE: 5.1 IP, 2 ER, 8 K, 4 BB

It is a small sample size, but none of Lance's best work.

Just another reason why they'll play it safe here. I don't blame them at this point. If Castro was part of the plan then he should have caught more guys more often. It's too late to make this kind of change now. I but that on Dusty.

Since he came back he's batted 2nd, 7th, 2nd, 2nd.

I think they value his pinch hitting ability more

Altuve
Bregman
Yordan
Yuli
Tucker
Correa
Brantley
McCormick
Machete

My guess
