Can't be mad at that half inning at all... ball don't lie.

I'm mad at that half.

2 walks, 3 hits ... 1 run

2 barreled balls. Can't always control where they go, just have to hit em hard.

Didn't say I was mad at our guys. Just mad in general that we get 5 baserunners and only 1 run

No as frustrating as it is, it is games like the past two which makes baseball great.

AT LEAST WORK THE COUNT JESUS

Why the hell should bregman work the count in that situation? To get a pitch to hit? Better than the one he got? Highly unlikely. He was sitting on a pitch, got it, and hit it hard. The obsession of this thread with not swinging at the first pitch is tiring.

Did I see that correct that the guy just threw 8 straight balls and Bregs swung at the first pitch?

Bregman absolutely should have swung. If he hadn't, we'd be mad that he watched a meatball

If springer hadn't grounded into a DP, that would have been a sac fly at least

Why? To continue to put pressure on the guy
The rays had no one warming up in the pen
Bregs bailed him out

Love this comment from Dusty.

If we continue to do what we've been doing and they co to us what they have, I wouldn't be shocked if we won in 6 and didn't see a single high leverage spot. That's how much better we've been than they are, but this is baseball.

We should've told Bregman to hit a 30 foot dribbler down the third base line

Why didn't Bregman do this

Bench him

You can also put pressure on a guy by swinging at a great pitch to hit. Sometimes they just don't fall where you want them too. Absolutely nothing wrong with that swing. No reason to think he'd get a better pitch to hit when down 0-1.

3 ER in 16 innings. Down 0-2.

Also no reason not to think he might have drawn a walk if he had actually worked the count, either. Differing philosophies.

I actually feel really good about the pitching staff moving forward at least.

Grienke seems like excess at this point, given his performances. Goal #1 has to be get Whitley back on track.

Good point. We've seen almost all of their relievers. They've seen just a few of ours. They still haven't seen Urquidy or Javier.

We've also taken their two starters to about 100 pitches. If TB keeps having to lean on its bullpen like it has the last two games, I like our chances.

That's true. One philosophy is swing at a great pitch to either tie or take the lead. The other is to hope to draw a walk when down 0-1 with one of your best hitters. It wasn't miles straw up there...you take your chances with Bregman. Ball was just hit right at someone, like a bunch of others today.

Yeah, you can sit on a fastball over the outter half of the plate, just below the belt or you can can go down 0-1 and now have to defend breaking balls, the corners, etc.

I feel like if given a large enough sample size, would win most of the time.

I just hope that sample size is 7 games.

Frustrating. Same thing with the Nats last year.

I'm fine with Bregman's at-bat. Look at his stats:

1st inning lineout, 106.8 EV, .670 xBA
3rd inning groundout, 99.5 EV, .330 xBA
5th inning groundout, 103.0 EV, .380 xBA
8th inning groundout, 103.1 EV, .330 xBA
9th inning lineout, 98.4 EV, .430 xBA

Dude was smacking the ball all game. Unluckily, it was at some one each time. 9th inning, bases juiced, with a guy that was crushing it all game? He's obviously seeing it well. Let him rip. Little less launch angle, and it's a 3 run double. Little more launch angle, and he could've put it over the fence.

It's crazy how much luck is involved in each game. Looks like they honestly out pitched and out hit the Rays both days, but the 'stros are down 0-2. Sequencing of hits, hard hit balls right at someone, great defense by the Rays, and errors have been the downfall.
