It's called "understanding baseball." Bad sequencing happens to the best teams in baseball. We've just seen a a crazy distribution through 40 games.

Which, by the way, isn't a completely insignificant sample size, but it's not a very big one either. It's highly unlikely based off their careers that Tuve, Gattis, Gurriel, Reddick and Bregman are going to continue to hit the way they have. Gattis is already showing signs of life.

No GM or skipper worth their salt would make the knee jerk reactions some of you want. It's why they make the big monies while ya'll lose track of your emotions after every loss on the internet.

yep, something is seriously wrong in the minor leagues if both Fisher and Jake are on the big league roster.

can't carry both of those guys with a struggling offense

I've bwen on the Ted train for a while, but if you want want to bring him up then Kemp & Davis need another shot.

Yeah, isn't it funny that everyone with a 4.0 plus ERA becomes Juan Marichal when facing this lineup.
Good God some of you can overreact with the best of them.
you're right. Offense is good through the first quarter of the season. What were we thinking?
We are 5th in the majors in runs scored. 9th in OPS. That's pretty good, champ.

That doesn't paint the whole picture. Our standard division is too high. It's far too often all or nothing with the offense.

I understand baseball just fine. I can clearly see that when an offense gets shut down 30% of their games on the season there's more than just bad luck at play. Go ahead, keep beating your sequencing drum. And if you look up and there's 80 games passed and an issue still persists I guess we can just say we have the worst luck in major league history.

For the record, I'm not calling for knee jerk reactions. We aren't bad offensively because of Jake, Fisher, and Gattis. We are primarily bad because Altuve, Reddick, Gurriel, and Bregman can't do anything but hit an occasional single.

Finally, you do realize some of the list of guys you named in reference to their "careers", right? Yuli: 1 year career. Bregam: 1 full season. Reddick: .263 career hitter with a .762 OPS. Am I suppose to hang my hat on their track record??

I'll bet you 100 dollars right now that doesn't happen.

Breg's had a .791 OPS in 201 ABs in 16 and .827 OPS in 552 ABs in 17. Feel free to jump off a bridge over his .778 in 155 ABs in 18 if you really wan to.

Reddick, yeah, his career numbers are quite a bit better then the .227/.744 he's slinging so far this year. That was my point.

Yuli: Also played in 16, and was a very good player in cooba.

But we suck. Totally with you there. Fire them all.

The bats are not as bad as they've looked. The runs are coming.

On the other hand, the pitching isn't as good as it has looked. The starters are going to give up some runs before the All Star Break. Maybe even three or four of them.

I mean...We did touch up Sean Manaea for his worst outing of the year.

That guy on the bump tonight was dealing. Reminded me of good Keuchel. Soft on the corners and changed it up nicely.

And I really don't get the sentiment on this thread. We're 5-2 in our last 7 games. Thays a decent streak. What exactly is wrong with that?
I watched Condensed game this morning. Healey was very very impressive. The catcher's glove rarely moved on his 2 strike pitches.

all I have to say to that is:
1. You're a bandwagon fan that only started watching last October.
2. You don't understand baseball [insert pompous rant about some "advanced" stat].
3. Send everyone packing, this team is done.

Bandwagon fan here, can someone help me? am I doing it right?

Well hell Pete, that's not how we do it around here that's a nice objective & rational take you've got there but you would show a lot more baseball knowledge & true Astros fandom if you called him a scrub.

Just because I am a Google Sheets nerd and it's end of the school year (mailing it in is an understatement).

I plugged in all of the runs scored through 42 games in 2017 and 2018 for the astros and ran a basic standard deviation.

2017 = 2.9
2018 = 3.8

This standard deviation shows how crazy our sequencing and lack thereof has been. It's all or nothing right now.

Average runs scored for each through 42 games:

2017 = 5.1
2018 = 4.7

Sequencing generally suffers when the team batting average & slugging percentage decrease.

The Astros can score runs in bunches, that's for sure. But if they don't have a lead by the 4th inning, I don't expect them to win.

Exactly. No chance they break up the nl central or AL east imo. A team in Mexico would be beyond stupid. No FA is going to live in that **** hole corrupt place
It's true that you don't have to have lived in Fallujah to know it's not a nice place, But I wonder how many people commenting on Mexico City have actually been there.

I bet even fewer have been to Venezuela, the Dominican republic, Cuba and other Latin countries whose Spanish-speaking baseball players would not only consider Mexico City to be a step above what they are used to, but would also love the city and feel at home speaking Spanish.

One thing that's for sure is the house would be packed. I'm not sure that I'd rather play in an empty stadium in one of our own domestic ****holes like Detroit than I would in front of a packed house in Mexico City.

You aren't selling suites, or Diamond Club season tickets in the DR, Cuba, or Venezuela. In 2016, the average price of attendance was 77.92for two people. In the DR, the average wage is about $7.50 a day. There's no way the stadium is filled. Conversely, if the stadium is full, the teams won't be able to pay major league salaries.
I don't want to clog up the thread with a long rant about Mexico City, but I think you should do some research on wealth distribution and corporate presence there, then some more about the most common businesses/entities that buy luxury suites. IDK if there is research on the Mexican & Mexican/American's sporting event expenditure relative to salary, but having lived both in Mexico City and Houston I can tell you anecdotally that Mexicans embrace their teams the way the more rabid American fan bases (Cubs, Cowboys, etc) do. I'm not saying that they are going to be able to gouge on cheap seats and still have a packed house like many American stadiums do, but the luxury boxes will be bought.

You have a strong point about avg price vs. avg salary, but a Mexico City team would also have the entire and very significant Mexican TV market, which would mitigate a lot of the resources they don't have.

Let's just put it this way - people a lot smarter & well-researched than either of us disagree with you, or else Manfred wouldn't publicly promote Mexico City as an expansion candidate the way he does.

I remember several years ago Cano was linked to Biogenesis & I think Gammons made a similar tweet and then had to retract.

So Cano is basically ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injury and suspension. Which makes the Mariners WC shot even tougher

Assuming the suspension is real, then he's done for the year. The broken bone was expected to keep him out 45 to 60 days. Add 80 games on top of that and that's the season.
Harry Dunne
How long do you want to ignore this user?
He's only on the 10-day DL for now. Yuli did his suspension while he was still likely injured - they put him on the DL AFTER he served it. They were guessing Cano would miss two months and then have a rehab assignment so he probably wasn't coming back until late July anyway. I think 80 games puts him around mid August.

Surely they won't allow him to miss just 2-3 weeks than he would have missed anyway, right? Will they make him prove he has "resumed baseball activities" before he can start serving it?

In other news

Some numbers on @cchooks 1B Taylor Jones, who belted his 7th HR in tonight's 2-1 victory.

Ranks in Double-A:

- 1.164 OPS (1st)
- .375 batting average (5th)
- .486 on-base percentage (2nd)
- .679 slugging percentage (2nd)
- 20 extra-base hits (T-3rd)

Look out, @MiLB.

I'm not arguing about Mexico City, but when you try to apply the reasons why a MLB franchise could thrive in Mexico City to the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Cuba, it doesn't translate well.

Furosemide, trade name Lasix, is a commonly used diuretic. It's frequently used for patient's with chronic conditions like congestive heart failure or for treating lower extremity edema.

Curious what a prime athlete in the best shape of his life would be taking it for.

Apparently it's used as a diuretic to mask PED use which is probably why it's banned.
