I pulled up Giles' game logs. Here are the runs he gave up.
- Gave up one run in the ninth, up 4-0
- Gave up one run in the ninth, down 1-3
- Gave up four runs in the ninth, tied 0-0 (and then punched himself in the face)
- Gave up three runs in the ninth, up 8-3
To me, the four to the Yankees is his one truly terrible performance. The Cleveland game was an anomaly because the first batter he faced battled him to a 17-pitch AB. Giles averages 12.5 pitches per outing. Hindsight is 20/20, but he likely should have been pulled after that AB, or at least after the next hit.
The problem was that Harris came in and was even less effective, and Rodon couldn't put hitters away. Those two guys could have helped out their fellow relief pitcher, but failed.
