Big win. Nice bounce back effort.

Or he realizes an out is much more important than the lead runner with a 4 run lead...and he was listening to his catcher who was telling him to go to first the entire time.

Maybe you're right. Sure did look like Davis expected him to go to second. Play by play guy was surprised as well and commented that he could have had the out of second. Neither of those things means you're not right, I was just surprised and didn't agree with the decision.

Well no **** I'm fine with that too but I'd rather it be a safe throw to second, he had plenty of time.

The throw to 1st is always the safest. Regardless, nice to see Giles get back at it after giving up a lead off hit.
Well sure, of course it is but it doesn't mean it's always the right play.

think it's a reflection on his mental state that he could have fairly routinely gotten the lead runner but he went ultra conservative just to get something.

Sure. I don't disagree but with a 4 run lead and 1 out already, forgoing second is not a bad idea no matter how much time you have.

I see your point. Maybe I'm wrong on this one.

Obviously the out @!1st is safest but it seemed like such a routine play to 2nd and probably a double play as well.

The way it turned out makes your line of thinking look smart, but we saw yesterday what can happen if you give the other team even just one extra out to work with.

Yep. Fair point, but what happened yesterday is a mega outlier.

Just left Yankees Stadium. So many Astros fans in the building.

That's true, but I think not making that out @ second would be, if not quite a "mega outlier", still a pretty unlikely outcome and I think he didn't go to second because he lacked confidence, not because he has a high baseball IQ and made the safe play (or listened to his catcher).

But anyway, great win, glad to get back on track, still do not love Kenny G.

Was listening on th radio and the radio guys said McCann was telling him to go to first.

So even when Giles does get an out it's not good enough since it wasn't the right out?

Even when it was the right out

It was a very slow roller back to the mound

Good job to secure an out
Harry Dunne

Well then, my ignorance only goes so far, I'm going to defer to McCann.

I think Kenny G has done enough to warrant a little criticism. Maybe not in this case, but let's not pretend like he's Billy Wagner reincarnated, who just had one bad outing.

I think he's a valuable pitcher who can give us a lot of good innings this year, he's just not the guy I want to count on to close out the big game.

I'm not going to argue with McCann. Obviously he knows what is best in that situation and he turned out to be right. If I knew he had directed Giles to go to 1st I would not have made my comment in the first place.

At the same time, let's not pretend like it was some sort of ESPN top 10 nominee to be made. It's a play that any major league pitcher should be able to make nearly every time. The commentators were surprised and the first baseman was surprised so it was not a unanimous no-brainer.
Beat40

I wasn't trying to be argumentative. I just had seen some speculation on both sides if McCAnn had told him to go to first or not. Just saying he did.

I do think he warrants some criticism.

However, I'm on the opinion he actually isn't lacking that much confidence since punching himself in the face.
Harry Dunne

Didn't come off argumentative at all, I was glad you posted that - it clarifies the situation a lot and I wouldn't have criticized the choice in the first place if I had known that.

To add to this the radio guys made it sound like McCann was clearly yelling "1" to Giles.

Edit to say I see that's already been discussed

There was a four run lead. Getting the out at first was the safe play and was the smart play. God damn, I hate some of yall.

E: I see this has been discussed to death. Carry on.

Guess who's batting .345 over his last ten games for Fresno with 4 HRs and 12 walks to only 3 Ks. It's not TED.

TED is eighth on the Grizzlies in OPS out of the guys with 90+ ABs. He's not coming up any time soon.

2 of those guys are already up, 2 already got multiple shots, & 2 are catchers. So the leaves drew Ferguson & Ted are potential call ups.

Ted should be up. Find out if he's ready. If it doesn't work out then try again next year.

I've just resigned myself that we're going to hear this drum beaten like an empty Oakland stadium.

Without looking I'm guessing Tyler White is one of them and we have seen what he can do when called up. Not saying he cant be good in the show but ted Hasnt be iven the chance yet: should he? Who knows but white has been given a few chances

No, he shouldn't. He's still young and is a core piece of this organization's future. You don't risk bringing him up too early and having him be overwhelmed at the major league level. Look at how people have completely turned on Fisher who has less than half a full season of PAs. And remember that Fisher was hitting very well in the minors before he got the call.

This.

He's gonna be treated like Correa and Bregman and not be called up until he's ready to be a cornerstone. None of this 'Oh well if he doesn't work out send him back down and try again next year'.

Once he's here he's going to be expected to stay here.

White was good in his time up last season.
