Very interesting article on Umpire variability. I actually think the most interesting part is the box and whisker plot at the end where you can see the real variability of a single umpire. I don't think players care as much about the strike zone for a given ump so much as they want the ump to be consistent in a game and from game to game. Your can adjust to a guy you know that will call more or less strikes and I suspect clubs have that data. You cannot plan for or adjust for a guy who is inconsistent.

Pitchers have been doctoring baseballs for as long as they have been throwing them. Maybe Brent Strom is just the pine tar wizard - like he makes his own moonshine extra strength pine tar and knows just where to hide it and how much to use and all that. I mean if they aren't calling it, it's not a foul, right? Just like the strike zone - you can cry about not getting the call or you can adjust to what they are calling.

1) pitchingninja is a great follow. He's hilarious and posts awesome pitching gifs 2) i love the reaction around baseball. Pretty much everyone is eye rolling the crap out of Tyler Bauer. He's just showing himself to be a bitter know it all.

I heard Storm makes them mix pine tar with their food so when they sweat the excrete a clear version of pine tar then when they wipe their face voila pine tar.
