I think this is the important piece that many are ignoring. If Luhnow fails to make a trade for a starting pitcher today, it's probably because he thinks the same prospects could net him DeGrom, Archer or Stroman this winter.
He's very likely to do what's best for the three-year window and not just for this year.

I think this is a really good point.
However, it would feel a bit like I felt as a kid when we were standing before some big toy that I could take home today and my parents would explain that we could get the same thing for half price if we just waited a month.

He's got to make a move now. Especially with every other team we might be facing in the playoffs making their rosters stronger.
I hate the thought of over paying as much as the next guy, but if there was a year to do it, this is that year.

So... Obviously there are no guarantees. But, hypothetical here, which do you take?
- Off-season pickups of Hand and DeGrom for Fisher, Martes, Davis, and pieces
- Trade today for Gray for Fisher, Martes, Hernandez, no RP help this year
- Trade today for Hand for Fisher, another top 5-10 org. prospect, no SP help this year
The flip side of everyone else overpaying to get better this year, is that they are making themselves worse for 2,3,4 years down the road.
