We really need to get another top end starter and bullpen arm. Rumors floating around that Boston wants Gray, and Atlanta wants gray or archer. Cleveland will likely be players too. If Cleveland or Boston get better and we sit on our hands, our road just got a LOT tougher, and I don't like it.

Atlanta? As in the 8.5GB East and 8.0WC Atlanta?

I was at that game as well. Was in college and my buddy's dad called and let us know his company had some extra seats in their section if we wanted to drive down. They had gotten seats up in the club level for some employees who were in from out of town. Amazing experience.

I don't get it either but...

The Braves are once again in the market for controllable starters, reports David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Atlanta was linked to names like Chris Archer, Jose Quintana and Sonny Gray last season and throughout the winter, and the Braves still have interest in that group of pitchers, according to O'Brien. While they've scouted Gray's recent outings for the Athletics, it's Archer and Quintana that sit atop Atlanta's wish list, O'Brien continues.

Atlanta probably feels like they are close to competing. They have a bunch of stud prospects starting to get close to MLB and plenty of other prospects to make a deal with.

Archer would be a great move for Atlanta if Tampa will bite. He is under club control through 2021.

The Astros, as a team, lead baseball in home runs. They also have baseball's lowest team strikeout rate. In the 19 full seasons since baseball moved to a 30-team landscape, no offense has led in both categories.

At a town hall right before spring training, someone asked about strike out rates. Hinch responded, "what we don't want is fewer strikeouts and less production."

I think this is it. I think Atlanta is where we were a few years ago and they want to get a frontline starter so they can hit the ground running once their pipeline matures.

The Dodgers are on fire and we're playing with a AAA rotation. I'm very pleased with our June performance given the rotation we're rolling out there right now.

In his last nine appearances, Hoyt has given up 12 runs. In addition to that, he's allowed 7 of 10 inherited runners to score. So that's 19 runs scored in his last 10.1 innings. That's trash. He needs to be sent back down. I just don't know who to replace him with.

If we're going to make a move, I'm hoping it's another bullpen arm. We've got a solid pen for the most part, but there is room for improvement with some of the weak links like Hoyt.

Hoyt is going to be a part of this team come October, and he's going to pitch meaningful innings in October. Hinch is a big believer in advanced metrics and Hoyt's advanced metrics all point to him being an excellent reliever, even if his ERA doesn't show it at the moment.

His FIP is 2.68, thats better than McCullers, DK, Giles, etc. His K/9 is 15.2 which places him 5th in the MLB.

Everybody is overreacting but remember that Hoyt inherited those runners! And the pitch he made was actually well executed, the batter was just ready for it. Maybe people should ***** about McCann calling for the fastball??

By 2.68 do you mean 3.10? He's10th on the team.

The 1.65 HR/9 is a little concerning too.

But it wasn't well executed. It was a second straight fastball in almost the same location as the one before. Except the one before was outside edge and Healy was looking for pitches away. The meat one was outer 1/3 of the plate and the same height. Basically the same pitch just over the plate. To a hitter looking in that exact spot.

I agree with all that except for the fact that the pitch was well executed.

It was a flat FB up in the zone and out over the plate. I'm fine with a FB there but it damn well better be untouchable and if he doesn't swing then you live with walking a run in.

I'm not arguing one way or the other, but this board blows a fuse if he walks in a run right there. Nobody would have considered that a grand slam would have been the alternative, and people would be pissed that he couldn't get one over the plate.

They just updated his stats. Doesn't change the fact that he's our best strikeout guy and he ain't going anywhere. I could see Hinch sending him down to AAA for like a week but he will be here come a Oct
.

It was a full count w/ bases loaded, you don't have the luxury of throwing an untouchable fastball. He hit his spot.

I would've rather seen his slider, which is one of the best pitches in the league. Oh well, moving on...

You're right. It was. Which is exactly what McCann was calling for...

Yeah you're right.

But I would be more inclined to tip my hat to Healy if indeed Hoyt had executed a really nice pitch outside the zone that he had the discipline to lay off of. It's way easier to swallow when the pitcher executes the pitch he wants to and it doesn't work out. Missing bad, up in the zone just can't happen.

Also I think the best thing Healy did in that AB (besides cranking a HR) was spoiling the slider down and away and managing to get the bat on it for a foul tip. That's Hoyt out pitch and once he saw that pitch it forced Hoyt to have to come with a fastball. The first FB was high enough he couldn't square it up but the next one was a meatball.

Nationals park is awesome. I definitely recommend catching a game there if you get a chance

I want to and looks like it's gonna happen; but for sure we're going to their minor league affiliate, the Potomac Nationals for their game in the 4th of July. The Nats play at home then took and might catch their game on the night of the 5th.

I saw a stat this morning that the Astros had the second-best record in the AL for June at like 14-9, one win fewer than the Royals.

The fact that they've done that with a patchwork rotation and an exhausted bullpen makes it even more impressive.

Tidbit on Gray

Quote:

The Athletics do not feel a need to wait until the deadline to begin moving veterans, sources tell MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. That may be true even (or especially) in the case of Sonny Gray. While he's controllable, and doesn't have to be traded, a rival exec says he thinks Oakland will be interested in dealing him early to avoid a month of injury risk.

This is why his value isn't as high as some expect
