Ever since Hoyt beaned Pedroia he hasn't been the same. Very erratic and either nowhere close or throwing meat.

It's unreal. Young club, too much nightlife?

As much as it's on Hoyt, this one could be on Hinch. He's been good for the most part this year but that one is baffling. Bases loaded and you bring in a reliever who can't throw strikes.

Kid worked out of a lot of trouble. When he went to 25 pitches in the first inning and didn't give up anything you just knew he was going to fight it all night.

Earlier in the season it was Lil Troy's Wanna Be A Baller. I would hear people in the stands continuing the song after it stopped playing.

It's pretty much unanimous on Hoyt. He's gone off the rails the last couple of weeks.

It was one pitch away from working out.

Instead Hoyt threw a flat meatball.

The pitch selection at the end on Healy was goofy too. Slider away like 6 straight times then fastball away that Healy was a bit late on trying to to to RF. His best pitch is slider so he ignores that and he goes fastball away again and gets more of the plate and Healy does what he did the pitch before and goes away. But gets it on the meat of the bat. Your best pitch is slider. Throw it. Healy is the only guy in their lineup who can hurt you. If you walk him you walk him. You cannot let him beat you.

Hoyt actually has the highest K rate vs right handed hitters on the team. Really makes you wonder what would have happened if Hinch had gone to him when he planned to instead of changing his mind and letting Fiers stay out.

To face one of their better hitters? He fell behind Healy immediately and as the poster above pointed out, threw a meatball fastball.

Should not give up on Hoyt. I believe he is going to be an elite RP soon (even if not this season). His breaking pitch has the #9 swing and miss % of all pitches in baseball. His fastball just needs a little bit of "run" so its not so flat...

My opinion

Problem is the count was full and bases chucked so it's hard to throw that slider for a ball and get a swing. He cant throw it for a called strike.

With nowhere to go and Heally spoiling a slider on the foul tip it had to be a fastball.

In what situations? High-leverage? What about over the last three to four weeks? On the first batter out of the pen? Maybe against the other teams best batter?

This is why you can't be a slave to analytics with your in-game decisions. Use them to inform, not as a law.

That's what I'm saying. The one time it clearly appears Hinch isn't a slave to analytics and pitch count it bites him hard. If Hoyt comes in with 1 out and a runner on 1st and 3rd, who knows how the outcome is.

Between baserunning, and then Hoyt running out to the mound only to run right back to the pen for two batters, and leaving our usual army of LOB at MMP, I'm beginning to wonder if we may need to put our guys in a hotel for home game nights. Just doing seem to have the same swagger at home.
Mathguy64

Then at least come inside. He's protecting that far side because of the slider away. Come in and tie him up.

In the end I just don't like getting beat on your second best pitch.

Our run differential is +30 at home. It is +89 on the road. Why the **** can't this team figure it out at home?!

I am completely over Hoyt. When was the last time he didn't allow every single inherited runner to score?

Sometimes you just make a bad pitch and the batter makes you pay. That's part of the game.

He brought him in to face a righty and he game up a grand freaking slam. Analytics would tell you to NEVER let Hoyt pitch in any game there isn't at least a 3 run differential in.

Even before that the wheels were off the tracks. He's been useless for at least a month now. Everytime I see him come in the game, he seems to be giving up runs.

He should be the guy you put in when behind big and need someone to eat innings and giving up runs isn't so detrimental.

Not the guy coming into a tie ballgame with the bases f'ing loaded

Yeah I can agree with that.

I'm just of the opinion that it was horrible execution by Hoyt.

He was one pitch away from us saying 'Damn that was a legit K for the young guy. That was nasty. '

Instead he made a mistake and paid for it.

And sometimes it's predictable enough where everyone watching the game groans when that pitcher comes in the game.

Pitchers like Hoyt shouldn't be pitching in a tie ballgame unless there is a flu-injury bug going around.

Analytics requires a larger sample size than 1 plate appearance.

Hell, I'd put Gregorsuck in over Hoyt. He's at least showed me something this season.
