Giles is not a shutdown flamethrower, but he's also not nearly as bad as we sometimes think he is.

And even if he is that bad, then all other closers sans Chapman and Kimbrel and maybe one or two more are also terrible, and no upgrade is available.

Agreed with the recent post on Giles. He is good enough to be the closer of this team in the playoffs. Where he runs into trouble isn't in games where he starts an inning, it's when we had a big lead and Giles had to come in with bases loaded to extinguish it. Like last night, and the Angel game.Those are actually his only 2 blown saves this year.

When he starts an inning he gets the save. Come playoffs, we won't throw out struggling pitchers in the 8th.

Additionally, there isn't anyone realistically better than Giles that we could obtain.

Giles' numbers look good on the surface, but most of those pitchers have a higher WAR because Giles sucks with regard to inherited runners scoring.

I agree with this. Giles biggest weakness is lack of command, and due to that, it is difficult to bring him in the middle of an inning with runners on base. You just do not know if he will be able to command and control the ball enough to the first hitter with say a runner on third base or bases loaded. Thus, I doubt in a post season situation he would be used that way.

With that said, given how well we played and our cushion, it is a nice luxury to be able to allow Hinch to put guys into different spots during the course of the season so that he will then be able to better understand their strengths and weaknesses and use the guys in the postseason to maximize their strengths.

According to fangraphs only Ozuna has more than a marginally higher WAR. The rest are at most .1 or .2 better than Giles who has a .5 so far this season.

They have access to more advanced stats that we could ever dream of... I really wish we would just shuck roles completely and throw guy's when it favors their repertoire.

An overrated stat and tradition screw all of that up though.

Giles has allowed 7 of 12 inherited baserunners to score, including the maximum of 3 on two occasions and the other time he came in with the bases loaded the hitter drilled a line drive right at an outfielder.

Probably to have a fresh arm in the pen.

A good 7+ inning outing from Dallas tonight would go a long way.
