Wish the game had gone a little better but Seattle was awesome. We got lucky and had some great weather. Also got a pic with 60.

If you look at our offensive stats, you'll see these four guys at the bottom:

Springer .219 / .306 / .625, 5 R, 8 RBI
Altuve .188 / .257 / .188, 0 R, 0 RBI
Bregman .179 / .258 / .214 1 R, 0 RBI
Gurriel .125 / .125 / .167 1 R, 0 RBI

And just above them

Reddick .227 / .261 / .273, 0 R, 0 RBI

Of those guys, I can live with Springer's production. A .931 OPS is well above his career average. Would you like to see his BA a little higher? Sure, but he's getting on base and driving in runs, so no complaints from me.

The other guys, particularly Bregman and Altuve, are killing us. They aren't setting the table for the guys behind them, and aren't driving in anyone when the bottom of the order gets on. They are a black hole in the lineup right now.

In Bregman, you have a guy entering his first full year in the big leagues who missed most of Spring Training to sit on the bench for team USA in the WBC. I don't think it's a surprise that he's struggling. Similarly, Gurriel is entering his first season in the big leagues, so a slow start isn't a huge shock. If these guys don't start showing signs of coming out of their funk soon, however, Marwin needs to be an everyday player. We can't have both Gurriel and Bregman in the lineup providing zero production.

The biggest issue for Reddick has been the number of lefties we've faced so far this year. He's slashing .333/.385/.417 versus righties and .100/.100/.100 against lefties. I'm not opposed to letting him get some work against lefties, but he shouldn't have been in the lineup versus Paxton, the hardest throwing lefty starter in MLB, twice. He'll be fine once the pitching match-ups get a little more favorable for him.

That leaves Altuve. He tapered off at the end of last season and has tapered off even more. He didn't have a good spring training and didn't have a good WBC, either. I don't know what his problem is, but if he doesn't get it going soon, our offense will continue to struggle. So far this season, we've replaced an MVP candidate with a AA scrub in the three-hole. That's not a recipe for success.

I can't really complain about anyone else eight games into the season. They're all within a reasonable range of what you'd expect from them over an eight-game snapshot. And even the guys listed above can turn around their season stats in a game or two. It's probably not fair to be so critical over such a small sample size, but when it comes at the start of the season, it's always going to be magnified, especially when the expectations were so high.

My main complaint is lineup management.

Gattis hits the most bombs on the team and drove in a ton of runs last year. He need to be batting no lower than 5th in the order. Beltran needs to be 8th or sitting. Gurriel needs to not be higher than 7th. Aoki should be on the 2 hole.

I know these are reactionary, but the manager is tampering with the lineup without actually utilizing the early season successes and limiting the early season slow starts.

Righties:
Springer CF
Aoki LF
Altuve 2B (he will come around)
Correa SS
McCann C
Marwin 3B
Reddick RF
Beltran DH
Gurriel 1B

Lefties:
Springer RF
Marwin 1B
Altuve 2B
Correa SS
Gattis C
McCann DH
Bregman 3B
Aoki LF
Marisnick CF

We have to see a pretty big shake up soon right? If for no other reason than to just change things up and try and get the bats going? Even Hinch has to see that...

Against righties, Reddick is another option in the 2-hole.

GD it's gonna be a long season if we really go all 162 without posting any tatas.

However, I suspect we have a big win somewhere along the line and we all go crazy and everyone on here gets a 3 day ban.

Mods would ban someone for posting a clip of one of the MLB Network girls breaking down a routine fly ball out.

Out of the Park Baseball, it's an award winning baseball game/sim.

Steam is a game platform for PC/Mac games. Just go to store.steampowered.com to check it out. Basically it's a free download and then you can play thousands of different games once you pay for them. Counter Strike is probably the most well known game through Steam

Very good breakdown iBrad.

The godfather of Fangraphs, Dave Cameron, painted a pretty bleak picture on Yuli Gurriel today.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-astros-might-need-a-first-baseman/

Quote:

So either Gurriel's going to have to make a significant adjustment in his plan at the plate, or he's going to have to start crushing the ball out of nowhere. I don't know how optimistic I'd be about either of those things right now, and even decent gains in both areas wouldn't leave him as more than the average-ish hitter that the projections forecasted coming into this season.

Cameron basically goes on to say that Yuli Gurriel is flailing at way too many pitches with very little to show for it. Not a good combo at all when you're 33 years old. However, it's still early.

Yuli is only slashing .207/.241/.437 for me as well

I dont have high hopes that Yuli significantly turns things around. I would like to see Reed given another shot for playing time sooner rather than later.

No. We're not in dire straits yet.

Hell Yuli is already a better 1Bman than fatty

I dont think either are the answer, but I think we have to figure that out early on so we can adjust.

And again it wouldn't be so bad to have 1 or 2 struggling bats (Marisnick or Gurriel) in the lineup if the studs were producing like they're expected to.

That's not an encouraging article. Hopefully the plate discipline will come around soon. His .344 average this spring was encouraging. Of course, Colin Moran and JD Davis hit better than that, so spring success doesn't always equate to season success.

Anyone got any tickets they want to get rid of for next Thursday's afternoon game?
