So let's assume that we win the AL west. I know, not a big stretch, but who do we play. Who wins the wild card? There's 2 of them right? We play well against the children of the poor but what about the rest?

Assuming we have the best record in the AL, we would play the wild card game winner in the first series

Boston and New York I think are pretty safe bets to make the playoffs. I think Cleveland ends up winning the central.

The last wildcard spot is a literal crapshoot between oriels, blue jays, Tampa, twins, rangers....and Kansas City which I unfourtantely think turns it on and comes roaring back to win the last spot. They give is issues for whatever reason with a bunch of guys that just have career days against us

It's more than a crapshoot. It's more like plain crap. Because that last team is going to be a steaming pile of it. They may be something like 82-80.

Gregersuck. My only hope is that these performances push the issue with management to get backend bullpen help. I'll say it again, I'd like to give Peacock a chance as the late inning guy. Let Felix cover long relief.

6-1 road trip, 28-11 vs the AL West

The bullpen is just a flat out problem. And I know Giles only has a few blown saves and his overall numbers look good...but the guy is constantly working himself into trouble and narrowly escaping some of these situations. He had an ERA approaching 4 several weeks ago.

We aren't going to be able to find some elite level closer but I sure don't feel comfortable with a 1 run lead against the red soxs, Yankees or Indians in October on the road and trotting out Giles, gregerson, Harris, Sipp, feliez or Hoyt in the middle to late innings. These are elite post season lineups and not the Oakland As in June in a half empty ball park.

Just my 2 cents but getting the best available bullpen arm to help devinski is a bigger priority than another SP. I know it's a broken record but most WS caliber teams have that 1 guy they can just hand the ball to and go get an out. Chris is that for us at times but I feel he's more closer material (in the post season not regular season) and we need to identify somebody that we can trade for that fits that mold

Assuming our starter does well in the playoff game, you will only see Harris, Devo and Giles in a playoff game, unless Sipp comes in for the lefty specialist move

Gregerson, et all wont pitch in tight playoff games

Fair point. But is there anyone out there that has a shutdown closer?

That is attainable and teams would be willing to trade? No...all those are pretty much on rosters with teams WS contenders.

But that shouldn't stop you from trying to add a solid arm on a bad team (Watson, colome, Rodney, reed etc).

Those are all additions that allows you flexibility to only roll with combos of Giles, devo and player X along with peacock.

Not having to use Harris or Sipp or gregerson or feliez at all I feel is a big win.

There are a handful.

Kimbrel, Kenley Jansen, Greg Holland, and Wade Davis all have at least 20 saves and ERAs under 1.60.

And actually I wonder if the Cubs would be willing to part with Wade Davis? They're not looking good and he'll be a FA at the end of 2017. Seems they could flip him for some talent and even resign him if they want.

Agree except for Harris. Dude is under 2 in ERA and has arguably been our best reliever over the last 3 years.

Ok. Cool. Dig having a relevant local 9 to talk about and a bunch of cool Aggie buddies to talk about it with.
Who do we go get?

Hard to imagine a scenario where Will Harris is not a big part of the postseason bullpen rotation. I don't really understand that take.

While we may not agree with it Feliz and Hoyt will see playoff appearances. Feliz is a decent arm and Hoyt was pretty good up until a couple weeks ago when he forgot how to throw anywhere near the strike zone.

Harris and Feliz are decent bullpen guys to have if needed...they will be useful down the stretch.

29-9 on the road. Incredible.

I'm amazed that multiple people think that Harris is just decent or a bullpen filler. Guy has a sub 2 ERA and is routinely in high leverage situations

Harris has had very rough stretches earlier this year and the back end of 2016. Up to the Allstat game last year he was unhittable. Still ended with a good ERA but got stripped of his closing duties last year because he was getting squared up consistently down the stretch and blew multiple games.

He is no where near gregerson or Harris suck, obviously but I just think the guy is an average/good reliever. He does get used in a lot of high leverage spots...and he's also appeared in lots of low leverage inning eating spots where are getting blown out or up multiple runs.

And on the flip side of that I know I'm in the miniority on this but I would actually rather see Harris than Giles personally because he typically has good command instead of guessing as to where his 2 seamer is going (ie most Giles appearances)

Think our BP has issues? A Rockies reliever gave up 5 runs on 4 wild pitches. That has to be a record.

That's A&M vs TCU Minute Maid classic bad....which I set through all 16 innings for

And we don't have Sam Dyson either.

If we don't make a move. Does anyone else think we might see a live arm like Martes out of the bullpen?
Ag_07

Hell no.

He's too erratic. Starters can work around a walk here and there but relievers cant.

The BP will be fine. When we get healthy Peacock will be out there. I also like the idea of McHugh out there given his arm issue this year.

What about Juan Nicasio as another bullpen arm? They have tried him as a closer some with poor results, but he is having a good season for the Pirates. He would add some nice depth to the bullpen.

He is on a one year deal and should be pretty cheap in a trade.

I know Tony Watson has been a popular name, but he has stunk this year.

And just a quick update on the BP's numbers

The Astros BP ranks 9th in AL in ERA (3.91). However, we're 2nd in FIP (3.21) and 1st in WAR (5.0). That's all with the 5th most IP (265).

BP is getting a bad rap when in reality they're performing pretty well especially considering the workload they've had.

I have been away from the thread since I left work Wedneday...but I had to post this.

Pretty unbelievable that this is the AL STANDINGS!

I honestly cant even wrap my mind around a 10 game League lead.
