No idea.

Probably not as much as we'd like simply because there's only 1 year remaining on contract. If we dealt him during off-season, it would pretty much have to be to a team that needs a 3rd baseman so that limits the market. Trade deadline 2018 would be a bit different because I think then any team that feels he would put their offense over the top would be interested... but of course you run into the issue of him being a 39 year old you are hoping makes it to the trade deadline healthy.

I'd rather just go the route of "Let's not have Andrew Cashner be our #2"

If we roll Cashner out as our #2 pitcher then we should probably start looking for a trade partner for Beltre because that team will stink.
I don't disagree. Most looks at his stats have him heading in the wrong direction.

Who else is there?!

Top FA SPs:
Darvish (31-R) : 3.88/1.18
Jake Arrieta (31-R): 3.49/1.20

Others
Estrada (34-R): 5.04/1.42
Lackey (38-R): 4.98/1.35
Sabatthia (37-L): 3.82/1.26
Hellickson (30-R): 4.88/1.22

I think Cashner is better than the "Others."

Best signing will be if Martin Perez becomes what he can. Having Cashner as the #3 would be sufficient, but we are really looking at a similar rotation as we have.

That still gives you AJG and Martinez as your #4 and #5. YoMen leads the group of about 4 or 5 minors who are hopeful.

You sign Darvish and Ohtani, having Hamels and Perez... you can then trade off some of the guys like YoMen to get field help.

Chances are high, IMO, we trade for a bad contract on a SP like Verlander.

Yikes,

If that is the free agent competition Darvish is going to clean up. There is always somebody willing to overpay.

Going into 2018, the Rangers have 2 legit SPs (1 some might say):
Hamels: 17GS, 3.78, 1.15
Perez: 25 GS, 5.00, 1.54
AJG: 13 GS, 5.26, 1.33
Nick Martinez: 14 GS, 5.26, 1.33
ABD: 6 GS, 4.99, 1.32

Then, they have:
AAA: Nothing

AA:
Yo Mendez (22-L): 23 GS, 3.54, 1.13 <- On 40
Pedro Payano (22-R): 15 GS, 3.52, 1.39 <- Will be Rule V eligible
Collin Wiles (23-R): 23 GS, 4.39, 1.27 <- Will be Rule V eligible
Ariel Jurado (21-R): 26 GS, 4.71, 1.42 <- Will be Rule V eligible

A+
Richelson Pena (23-R): 17 GS, 2.92, 1.03 <- Will be Rule V eligible
Jonathan Hernandez (21-R): 12 GS, 3.43, 1.51 <- Will be Rule V eligible
Brett Martin (22-L): 15 GS, 4.88, 1.51 <- Will be Rule V eligible

Going after Darvish has to be priority #1 or #2 (Ohtani). Either way, getting one of them is critical, IMO.

They have 6 SPs that I know of... who will be Rule V eligible and subject to loss.

Several teams could stash these guys as a long-reliver.

TOTALLY makes sense.

Should be large crowds and geographically convenient for both teams.

Oh... you said TAMPA... not PAMPA.

Great. So both teams will have to fly AROUND Harry to get to Tampa. Then have to fly all the way back to Texas.

MLB.

What is the reasoning on this? Astros didn't want to lose their home field advantage, so insisted on a neutral site. Playing in Tampa seems pretty extreme and virtually nobody will be there, so it will be a money loser as far as revenues go.
Mr Gigem

No idea on the reasoning. I mean, both teams are already here. Just let the Astros be the home team?

As far is revenues go, I don't believe the Rangers are on the hook for anything since the Astros are considered the home team and will be reliable for "gate expenses" (I think that's what they're calling it)

Large crowds in Pampa? I'm assuming that you've never been there.

But come to think about it, they probably will be bigger there than Tampa

I don't know that I've ever been to Pampa, but they would draw enough fans from Amarillo and surrounding areas looking to see two MLB teams play than they will get in Tampa.

And Amarillo will be getting the AA Missions from San Antonio. I don't recall who the affiliate will be, because the Elmore group is shuffling things to get a AAA team affiliated with the Rangers in San Antonio.

That payola needs to go toward the pitching staff. This lineup will have enough talent to win if the pitching holds up.

Amarillo's minor league team used to be the Gold Sox. They attempted a little marketing with a Gold Sox mascot that was one of the more spectacular failures in mascot history. I would post the pic if I weren't on my phone. I'll post it later when I get home unless someone beats me to it.

I get both sides.

Rangers already have ticket sold and lose lot of money
Astros say screw you we will just got to Tampa

Essentially Dillon and Larembie couldn't agree on a field so Coach Taylor built his own field to say screw you guys.

Who cares about the fans in either case

From the Astros thread... and yes it got stars...

"I really hate those *******s even more now. Eff Dallas."

Yea eff the city that is opening up its doors, sending millions of dollars of food, supplies and water to your city. Also the home of hundreds of volunteers that are taking it upon themselves to drive down there, risking their own lives, to rescue Houston residents. Or how about the Dallas Cowboys housing your team, donating and raising millions of dollars to your cause.

From what I've seen they're not being entirely forthright here. It sounds like the Rangers didn't want to trade the series and that was it. They were willing to do anything else the Astros wanted.

That's from me, and yeah, I hate the Rangers even more now. The Cowboys are doing what the Rangers had a chance to do, but chose to put their foot down when they probably shouldn't have. I'll give Jerry his due because he deserves it.

Not even close to the same thing. Cowboys/Texans is a completely meaningless game, and it's not like the two teams play each other in the regular season and then the Cowboys offered to move their home game to Houston. You're reaching

Rangers offered to play the series in Arlington. Houston denied. Now the series is being played in Tampa. Simple as that

I understand your hate for The Rangers. But the city of Dallas is doing all it can and then some for Houston. As a Ranger's fan I am ashamed, this a classless, chicken **** move and JD has gone downs few notches in my book. This is going to leave a giant **** stain on the organization.

Just stop. There is absolutely no reason to just forgo millions of dollars in revenue. We gave our most reasonable offer, and Houston declined.

It's still a business, not GoFundMe

The Astros, who have the division (and likely the top AL seed) in the bag, had the choice between playing a series in Texas or in Florida, and chose Florida. Now they're crying foul because the Rangers didn't want to sacrifice millions of dollars of revenue and extend a road trip the final week of the season in the middle of a tight wild card race, meanwhile the Rangers are donating money to hurricane relief. One organization is showing its ass right now and it's not the one in Arlington.
mhayden

And he's right.

Houston trying to spin this like all they want is to play a game is shameful. They are mad because a team won't screw over it's own fanbase so they can keep a homefield advantage for 3 games. "That's sweet you offered us a place to stay and you even will pay all the rent and buy groceries... but we want the master bedroom and premium cable."

It's almost as if he saw what I said on here earlier.

One factor that y'all may not realize is that we invoiced for postseason last week. How would this situation affect playoff sales had we told STHs had we moved the series to Houston? In the STHs mind it would probably feel like a betrayal. "Cancel my tickets for the series in September? Okay, I won't buy postseason tickets. I also won't renew my seats for 2018."
DallasAg 94

If the games aren't changed, the burden is on the Astros. They would lose the games and revenue.

If the Rangers swap series, then the Rangers are the only one to incur a loss. The Astros and their fans would get the games on their terms and lose nothing. The Rangers would lose millions.

If the Astros held the games in Arlington, revenue splits could be and the most made out of the circumstance.

Moving the games to Tampa... the Rangers lose nothing (other than time). The Astros gain nothing and lose tons of revenue.

The Astros should have been fine just playing the Series in Arlington, but they chose not to. It was up to them to find a place to play... and they did.

The DFW Metroplex is everything to help Houston out. If the Rangers were willing to host the series and Houston declined... so beit.

I'm sure the Astros organization gave strong consideration to the needs of their own fans while deciding whether to play 3 hours up the road where many Houstonians have already traveled to wait out the flooding vs the 15 hour drive to Tampa. Just out of curiosity, did the Astros ever get a TV contract where their fans can at least watch it on the tube?

Actually, it wasn't just THEIR fans they were considering.

From the Reddit...

Quote:

part of their reasoning was that just handing the Rangers 3 extra home games (because revenue and who bats last aside, those would have functionally been Rangers home games) wasn't fair to all the other teams in the Wild Card race, especially given how much better the Rangers have been at home than on the road.

Reid Ryan admits it was gamesmanship. He wanted to make it as hard as possible for the Rangers to clinch the WC.

Not only was he unwilling to have the games in Arlington and net the revenue...He wanted the Rangers to lose home field advantage for the series in Sept when the seats would be full, in order for the Rangers to scramble and play the series on 1 day notice, limiting fan attendance.

What a dewsh. That tells you all the thanks you'll get from Astros fans!

How does the Astros' problem (of not being able to host their games) become the Rangers' responsibility? Sounds like the Rangers made an offer that Houston didn't like, so Houston went with another option (which is their prerogative). Does the MLB have a protocol for situations like this?
