Catching up on the thread a bit, but it was discussed a few dozen pages back -- Maddux is one of the highest paid pitching coaches in baseball (possibly the highest). By all reports Texas wanted him back and had offered him an extension, but he was shopping it and Texas either didn't want to wait or weren't going to pay him was the Nats were offering.

Why didn't the Rangers sign Pudge after the 2002 season? Did they just not want to pay a catcher in his 30s? My memory is a bit fuzzy on how it went down.

Still can't believe we were paying all that money to Arod while our pitching staff probably had an ERA close to 6.00.

$250 million to Arod in 2000. 2 year $24 million to Juando in 2002. 5 year $65 million to Chan Ho Park in 2002. And all it did was buy a 90 loss team in 2002. He'd also spent a ton on the Stars who were in a downward slide after peaking in '99-'00. So the "we can't spend our way to winning" started about the time Pudge's deal was up.

As log jammed as the AL Wild Card is, I'm really interested in the race for the NL Central. That's looking you either win the division, or you could potentially miss the playoffs

That would be your rotation (assuming they remain healthy) for 2 years. All but Hamels for '20.

If our scouts haven't registered a velocity dip or some other red flag, I don't think the money is that bad. To get a front line starter on the open market would cost you north of 30mm for more than just three years (even at age 35).

Disappointing news in San Antonio... looks like they will wait to build the new baseball stadium. They are one of 122 entrants for a new MLS team.

If you can split those invoices up into $10 million a year for Verlander and $18 million a year to bask in the afterglow of the Astros fan base melting down while they stand pat again and we swoop in and take a player some of them wanted, I think it becomes worth it. Not my money, though.
