I liked Maddux but am under no illusions that he is/was a miracle worker and not prone to mistakes of his own. But I do think he was a sound coach with a sound technical eye for the job. That is the aspect that I really question about Brocail, and it's the most important aspect of a pitching coach. I really don't think he has a good handle on how to identify and correct mechanical issues. Seems like his approach is charting and tough guy talk, but when a pitcher needs a lifeline, he doesn't seem to be of much use.

I don't know the back story on Maddux leaving. I do know that he passed up Manager positions twice (Cubs was one) in order to stay in Arlington. He had two daughters in HS, IIRC, and he was willing to stay in Texas until they finished school.

After that, I think Maddux wasn't willing to stay with the Rangers at a discount.

Also... I think he was attached to the injury filled 2014 season. With Darvish and Perez both going down with TJ... Colby Lewis had just had hip replacement, Holland kept having stupid stuff like his dog knocking his legs out while on the stairs. Matt Harrison's last real season was 2012.

I also wonder if him doing commercials and much of the praise he got what he did with the Pitching, wasn't working against him. If it is true JD didn't like Nolan getting praise for what he did for the Rangers, I can't help but think JD didn't like Maddux getting the credit for the pitching.

I think Maddux and Darvish's stays here have a bit of a parallel in that while they had shortcomings, they were still the best this organization has had. But the longer a guy is here, the more the shortcomings become the focus and the easier it is to forget how tough it was to find someone like them.

I had the opposite problem dating. Some of the worst girls I've dated... the longer they stayed around the harder it was to remember how easy it was to find someone like them.

Batting coach needs to be strongly evaluated also

While I don't disagree... the Rangers are 3rd in Runs scored.

At 4.9 Runs/Game... it is hard to be upset about the production regardless of any other stat.

Love what he said to Pudge about one day 25 years from now, Pudge could do the same thing to a new young player, as Bench did with Pudge. You could see Pudge perk up as if he never realized he could be the one welcoming a new HoF player that grew up idolizing him.
