Baseball prospecting is just a tough thing to do...

Almost all of us a few months ago would have said we would have preferred to give up Gallo than Brinson. Right now one 23 year old is sinking during his first taste of major league pitching, and the other 23 year old is potentially going to have a 3+ WAR year.

However many years ago Texas was given the option of Arias or Cano, and NY at the time preferred us to take the less-heralded/established Cano. We took Arias.
I thought Einhorn Eickoff would be regrettable. While he did well to start, he has steadily decreased his performance. He has done what Martin has done, however, Eickoff is 27. Perez is 26 and many, many more GS thank Eickoff.

We may regret Nick Williams, or Brinson... but, so far your point over the years that prospects are just prospects hold true and many we've traded off haven't gotten to where we thought they would be.

Just randomly decided to look at our prospect list. I think it's safe to assume that Guzman will play 1B for the rangers either this season, or next season. SO I won't include him. There are a couple guys that I'm fascinated to watch develop: Taveras, Calhoun, Ragans, and Matuella.

Taveras looks like he could be a star in the MLB. Can hit for a high average, and plays really good defense in CF. They're saying he's a ways away though, possible 2020 ETA. But my god, all I want is a high average hitting Rangers prospect. They don't even have to have good power! We've got that already in Gallo and Odor. Just get on base and be fast.

Calhoun has the body of an emperor penguin, but he can really hit. He doesn't K too often either, but has good contact and power ability. But he's extremely limited defensively. No idea if he's trade bait for a deal at some point, or if he ends up playing for us.

Ragans could be a number one starter, I just desperately want the Rangers to finally develop a homegrown starter who comes into the MLB for the Rangers and doesn't falter. Feels like it's been forever since we've had that. They're saying he's got the stuff to be a pretty damn good pitcher, and should only get better as he gets stronger/more experienced.

Matuella is interesting too, because they essentially said he has ace-type stuff, but he's obviously struggled pretty hard with some injuries during his time with the Rangers. He's 22 and still only in A ball, I would assume mostly due to injuries stunting his development a bit. But if he can remain healthy, who knows?

There are a couple others like Bubba Thompson (I feel like he could project to compare to Lorenzo Cain, but maybe with a little less speed), but those are the guys I'm most interested in following.

only scored 1 with bases loaded no outs. And Perez batted so he's coming back out.

C'mon don't lose this lead

There's no trash-talking. It's a good discussion.
This is the Rangers thread, most of us dont give a damn to discuss the inner workings of the Astros minds for pages on end. A few comments here and there is fine. That's probably why he said take it to another thread

True , but it wasn't trash-talking, it was good discussion, it involved the Rangers trading for Darvish, it wasn't very long, and this thread has been pretty much dead the last several games.

I agree - it wasn't trash talking. I just didn't care to see it, but it's done.

No worries, I just saw a post or two from our fans calling out their GM. In the meantime our season is in the toilet.

So, you basically looked at our Top Prospects list.

Taveras - He'll be a good'un.

Calhoun - JD was interviewed in Ben & Skin, and he said that Calhoun's defense isn't as terrible as some suggest. He said the Dodgers kept them at 2B too long and so now, it is just a matter of getting more experience in the OF. I think if he can become average at LF, he'll have more value at LF than Choo has in RF?!

Ragans is one that has also gotten my interest.

Matuella was taken in the 3rd Rd, but got a much higher signing bonus. He essentually got 1st Rd money. Some projected him as a potential #1. His injuries prior to being drafted were why he slipped. It was a gamble pick by the Rangers, hoping to get an "Ace" level player who was injured, believing after recovery he could contribute. Part of my mention about him early this week, was just about getting innings and remaining healthy. Personally, I don't care where he pitches as long as he keeps being able to throw.

Add a couple more walks.

He could be sporting a 900 OPS by week's end.

At work, so not watching. So I guess today is the day that Perez teases everyone and gets people to think he can actually be a legit #2-3 starter?

7IP/2H/1R so far. only 77 pitches through 7.

LOL... I know... thought about that as I hit "post". Figured what the hell, this season is bound and determined at end with a .500ish record anyway, barring a miracle turnaround finish down the stretch.

Odd not trying to at least let Perez finish this game. I guess the argument is he is out on such a good note, let that stick with him.

Right now, I offer you the choice of Aaron Judge or Joey Gallo for the next 10 years.

He wasn't supposed to pitch in NY. Banny indicated that Perez was going to work with Brocail about his pitch release, hiding the ball, and being mentally strong enough to make a bad pitch and recover without falling apart.

So, I could see them pulling him, having been out there 8.0 IP. Also, I didn't watch the game. The results would give you the perception it was relatively effortless, but the mental aspect may be he was done.

well he skipped a turn for that reason I thought..... maybe he had to move up one with Cashner out. Regardless, really nice outing.

Definitely our #2 next year

That is a very very interesting debate. I feel like the obvious answer is Judge, but something is telling me that as time goes on, the answer could actually be Gallo. I think Judge is coming back down to earth in a major way.

Given our current sample size, the answer is Judge.

If you have a crystal ball for 5 years from now, let me know.

I say this with the caveat that I love how Gallo has progressed this year. If he can keep progressing, he will be VERY good.

Just watched the Gallo HR replay.

Dave Raymond needs to spend his entire offseason watching a combination of routine fly balls and no-doubt homeruns to try and develop a skill at actually being able to gauge them off the bat. It's really not that hard on no-doubters. If you lack the ability to tell on your own from the trajectory, then key in on the outfielder (and sometimes pitcher) to get a clue. If they take 2 steps back then put their arms down, it's gone.

Hard to believe this club is only 3.5 out of the WC. Bunch of mediocre teams in the AL. If they can go on a 10 game run they could get in and be one and done.
