And yet Pedro had one more season in the Top 10 WARs, just as many seasons in the top 10 ERAs, 2 more seasons in the Top 10 WHIPs, 1 more season in the Top 10 adjusted ERAs, 1 more season in WPA, etc.Quote:
I understood your top 5 until you got to Seaver. If Seaver is in your lifetime, than Nolan Ryan is in your lifetime, and should make the list before Clemens and Martinez. Pedro was awesome/great for a 8/9 year span, just not long enough IMO.
...And all that comes with Pedro having an ERA 101 places better than Nolan, 7th best WHIP all time (Nolan isn't in the top 250), etc... including a better K/9 rate.
It just turns out that Nolan's relative strength compared to many in this conversation was not giving up contact and not the larger purpose of a pitcher which is to keep runs off the board. No doubt he was very good at keeping runs off the board, but was he as good or better than some of these other pitchers?
In case you missed it, I offered this earlier:

But you could start with this top 5 list and then we can talk about other folks not there such as Pedro. https://www.google.com/amp/s/syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/1714168-the-5-all-time-greatest-mlb-pitchers.amp.html
Feller, Carlton, Johnson, Gibson, and Seaver. Not a bad go at it if you ask me.
