Yikes hopefully it's nothing, hamstrings have a bad tendency to linger for a while

If I'm the Rangers I'm hopeful Drew Robinson comes up in Gallo's absence and shows some power but actually does some of the other things well, too.

I am not saying you necessarily pull the trigger on the trade, but if you can be comfortable trading Gallo because you have another young guy to fill the gap, someone probably at least hands over some bullpen arms for him.

His season at this moment in time looks decently similar to Chris Carter's before Oakland sent him off for a middle infielder (Jed Lowrie) and a bullpen arm (Fernando Rodney).

I'm not sure I see the logic in hoping a 25-year old Drew Robinson (who hits for power but has a low average and high strikeouts) improves so much that a 23-year old Joey Gallo is expendable in a trade.

Wouldn't it be simpler to just hope Gallo (who has the much higher ceiling) improves?

Drew Robinson is an intriguing guy since he can play basically every position outside of catcher.

I'm hoping that he can keep getting opportunities at 2nd, so we can light a fire underneath Odor's butt to change. Odor should 100 percent be hitting 9th. It is only because of Banister's at this point trademark stubbornness that he's been hitting where he is. His plate approach is still horrible despite randomly getting hot earlier. He did not earn the 4th/5th position in the lineup back.

My ideal scenario would be Odor is able to kick his approach at the plate, and earn his position in the lineup back. At this point I wouldn't have much of an issue with that. Then put Robinson on the bench, or put him in the OF as needed to spell Mazara or Choo.

You hope for both to play like All-Stars. Of course that's what you hope for.

But if they soon-to-be 24 year old is hurt and was digressing before that, you have to start planning for the contingency of deciding cash out on the guy while you can and let a recently turned 25 year old have those at-bats if he's showing progression.

(And digress is absolutely what Joey Gallo has done as this season has gone along.)

(And I'm just being facetious and playful about their ages because I don't see ~500 days difference as meaningful.)

In my eyes Gallo has improved this season haha. Even though he's had some horrific ABs, and is still striking out a bunch. He's a better batter overall than he was last season. I guess it's all about betting on if he can continue to make adjustments. Every pitcher he faces is essentially trying to walk him. I don't know when he'll figure that out, or even if he will.

Another thing I find a little weird is how many of the Rangers' young core are left handed hitters. Mazara, Odor, Gallo, Guzma... Even Robinson is a lefty although I wouldn't say he's on the same tier as those guys.

All I want is a right handed contact hitting prospect who walks a lot. Doesn't even need to hit homers. Just hit for a good average.

Lewin and Holtz are pretty much the only ranger guys that I've enjoyed listening too. Anyway, I have the MLB at bat app and always watch the game on my iPad while listening to the other teams crew. I've heard some pretty good broadcast teams. The only downside is I have to wait 1 hour and a half after the game is over to watch.
I wasn't prepared to include Rhadigan or Barnett as announcers.

You don't like Nadel or Hicks?!

On the whole, he's been better than last year's putrid season.

But he hit better this April than he did this May. And he hit better this May than he did this June.

Agree with the Gallo comments. The fact that he was able to make some adjustments this year (as compared to previous mlb stints) gives me some confidence that he can continue to figure it out. We will see. But it's hard to trade away that power if you are seeing some progress, and it's not like he is in the late 20's or anything, still a young pup who was probably rushed to the bigs a little too soon to begin with.

Only way I trade him is if somebody makes an offer (mostly based off his potential) that I can't refuse. Not going to trade for pennies on the dollar as long as we are seeing progress and he is still in his lower 20's.

I think the Rangers went heavy LH in Intl signing and draft.

And, that 2011 Int'l draft by the Rangers:

Darvish - RHP
YoMen - LHP
Pedro Payano - RHP
Eduar Pinto

Leonys Martin - LH
Ronald Guzman - LH
Rougned Odor - LH
Nomar Mazara - LH

Although Gallo is striking out at a high rate, he still seems to get his fair share of walks, unlike Odor. This, along with his age, give me hope that as he matures he will make more contact, and when he makes contact, damn...

Gallo walked 12 times in 94 PAs in March/April, 11 times in 106 PAs in May, and 5 times in 63 PAs in June.

His walks are going the wrong direction.

Gallo struck out 31 times in 94 PAs in March/April, 45 times in 106 PAs in May, and 24 times in 63 PAs in June.

His strikeouts are going the wrong direction. His ability to make contact and put the ball in play are going the wrong direction.

His OPS went from .880 to .814 to .636. His OBP went from .330 to .292 to .222. His BA went from .213 to .202 to .155.

This is what I meant by he's been digressing.

At least we're not paying Gallo the money we're paying Odor. What he's doing concerns me the most. At least with Gallo you have the excuse of saying "well, he's a young guy and this is really his first full year in the MLB." With Odor you do not have that at all.

500 days of difference isn't meaningful but a sub-800 career minor league OPS and 2 major league hits is worth hypothesizing about making our best young trade chip expendable?

Anyone know if he's having an MRI on it? Also, is it the same leg he had issues with in spring training.

Last story I saw said he hadn't had an MRI.

Sounds like its just sore. Maybe he hasn't been drinking his Gatorade.

I like nadel. Unfortunately, I'm never on the road while he's announcing. I usually only listen to the radio if I'm driving. The weird thing about dfw sports is that the radio guys are at least 10 times better than the TV guys in every sport.

Whelp, so much for the talk about Robinson. Hamels activated, Robinson sent back down to Triple A.

If someone is your "best trade chip" wouldn't you want someone capable of filling his roster spot if you indeed cashed in your "best trade chip."

In other words, when you're to the point of calling a guy a "trade chip", it's time to consider his possible roster replacements.

Does Kozma have nudes on Banny or JD? Robinson brings much more to the table. Terrible decision.

Cole Hamels is a trade chip.

Yu Darvish is a trade chip.

Hell, if we're losing and looking to rebuild then everyone is a trade chip.

But even that is beside the point -- it's not like Robinson has shown any legitimate long-term signs of being a guy that is going to be an everyday big leaguer. He was a good, but not great minor leaguer, and he has played in 1 major league game.

And if Gallo doesn't improve, then his trade value declines anyways.

Not really important, just seems like an out of place scenario... More fitting to say "I hope Drew Robinson improves because it'd be nice to have a better player."

I think they keep Kozma around mainly so Robinson can play everyday in AAA. But on the surface, not sure why we keep a guy hitting .110 or whatever it is now. He can play several positions and is good to have around I guess.

And? The dude is terrible at the plate. Robinson is a better option for a utility bench player and at least gives you some pop.
TheAngelFlight

Kozma has more middle infield experience to bring to the bench.

As far as his (lack of) options, I doubt they're trying to protect him.

They'd just drop him from the roster and run the risk he ends up with another franchise, I think, if they had other options they liked at all better.

The only reason I could think of is that maybe they'd want someone who has been in the MLB for a decent amount of time before like Kozma rather than someone as fresh as Robinson. Still though, I agree. Doesn't make all that much sense. Robinson seems to be the better of the two options, or at least has more potential than Kozma.
TheAngelFlight
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Robinson has about 6 innings of work at SS in the last two season.

Kozma will be gone whenever they feel comfortable with another guy on the bench playing that backup middle infield role. They're not trying to develop Kozma, so they also don't care if he doesn't get daily at bats.

Considering Robinson has played 3rd and 2B for them a lot lately, it's perhaps a developmental oversight he's not gotten more work inbetween at SS.

But they're also still trotting our Profar most days at SS in Round Rock.
