Texas Rangers vs. Oakland A's: Series Preview
Game 1: Jesse Hahn (RHP, 1-2, 3.03 ERA) vs. Andrew Cashner (RHP, 0-3, 2.63 ERA)
Game 2: Sonny Gray (RHP, 0-1, 4.22 ERA) vs. Nick Martinez (RHP, 0-2, 5.18 ERA)
Game 3: Kendall Graveman (RHP, 2-2, 3.67 ERA) vs. AJ Griffin (RHP, 4-0, 2.45 ERA)
The Rangers continue an 8-game homestand when Khris Davis and the Oakland A's come to town. Tonight will be the 7th matchup between the two teams, with the season series currently tied at 3 games apiece. The Rangers look to extend their current 3-game win streak while the A's will look to win a 3rd consecutive series. This division series is extremely important for both teams, as both are trying to catch the division-leading Astros (24-11).
Scouting the A's
The A's posted consecutive series wins at home, but struggled mightily during their last 9 on the road, posting a 2-7 record. Jesse Hahn takes the mound in game 1. He is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA is two games against Texas. He's 1-1 in five career appearances against Texas with a 4.13 ERA. Sonny Gray will take the mound in game 2. Gray is coming back from an injury and has had less than stellar performances in his first two outings, so I wouldn't expect him to go deep into the game on Saturday. Kendall Graveman wraps up the series on Sunday.
The Oakland offense has been subpar this season, ranking 26th out of 30 teams in runs scored per game, and ranking 24th is team batting average. They'll look to bounce back tonight, though, against Andrew Cashner, who's struggled in two career games against the A's, posting 0 wins and a 7.71 ERA. Khris Davis, aka Rangers Killer, has also struggled in his last view games, so you can bet he's glad to be back in Texas.
Scouting the Rangers
Fresh off a walkoff victory and looking to extend a 3-game winning streak, the Rangers appear to be building some much needed momentum, and there's no better time to do it than against a division opponent. The offense isn't what it was at the beginning of the season, but you have to believe the last 3 games and the team's resiliency in their finale against the Padres show some promise moving forward. Starting pitching has been a bright spot of late, although records do not reflect that. Banister has been pushing his starting pitchers deeper into games into games to give his taxed bullpen much needed rest. If the offense can get rolling and the starting pitching can stay strong, then the Rangers may become a real problem for their opponents.
AccidentProne's Rangers to Watch
Mike Napoli is coming off a game in which he hit two home runs, the second being a 3-run bomb to secure the walkoff victory for the Rangers. Could Nap's 2 homerun game be a sign that he is finally turning things around and playing like the Mike Napoli ownership and fans alike expected of him when he was signed in the offseason?
AJ Griffin has been a pleasant surprise so far this season posting a 4-0 record in 5 starts with an ERA 2.45. Griffin tossed a complete game shutout in his last outing against the Padres. Combine the 0.85 WHIP and .183 BAA with the tremendous run support he's received in all 5 starts, expect to see Griffin continue to be tough for opposing hitters.
Joey Gallo got the night off Thursday after going 0-4 with a walk and 3 K's on Wednesday in San Diego. Look for him to bounce back this series against the likes of Jesse Hahn, who's struggled to make it deep into games and keep runs off the board his last two games, and Sonny Gray, who's still coming back from an injury that delayed the start to his season. Gallo has been much more patient at the plate and putting together more competitive at-bats. AP's home run O/U: 2.5
