Afternoon transactions:
LHP Jake Diekman activated from 60-day DL
RHP Paolo Espino recalled from Round Rock
Contract of 3B Will Middlebrooks purchased
Contract of C A.J. Jimenez purchased
LHP Joely Rodriguez designated for assignment
RHP Jhan Marinez designated for assignment
The Rangers still need to create one more space on the 40-man roster.
Texas doesn't need to DL Adrian Beltre since rosters have expanded.
Paolo Espino (30) - Looks like a guy who could pitch instead of a position player to eat innings. Made MLB debut as a Ranger.
Middlebrooks (28) - Seems like the kind of guy you move around the organization as an emergency player. "Hey, we need someone in AA tonight."
Jimenez (27) - This will be his debut.
I think these 3 moves look like a reward move for guys that stay around baseball. Guys that really aren't quite at the level for MLB, but who are willing to be loyal to an organization and bounce around?
I think based on the 40:
Profar (24), Hoying (28), and Rua (27) will be moved up.
Alvarez (28-RP), Gosselin (28-3B), Tyler Smith (26-SS) are guys you are probably cutting after the season.
YoMen (22-SP), Sadzeck (25-SP\RP), Blackburn (24-P), Gardewine (24-RP) are guys you probably want to get some touches. YoMen got a taste last year and is a top prospect. Sadzeck was moved this year from SP to RP. At 6'7", he could be a late inning guy. Blackburn hasn't seen the majors, and Gardewine got his debut a couple weeks ago.
Guzman (22-1B) needs to get some ABs, once we've raised the white flag. Nap has been a nothing.
We need to make room for some Rule V guys this off-season. Earlier this week I noted 6 SPs. We have other position players of concern.
Quote:
AA:
Pedro Payano (22-R): 15 GS, 3.52, 1.39 <- Will be Rule V eligible
Collin Wiles (23-R): 23 GS, 4.39, 1.27 <- Will be Rule V eligible
Ariel Jurado (21-R): 26 GS, 4.71, 1.42 <- Will be Rule V eligible
A+
Richelson Pena (23-R): 17 GS, 2.92, 1.03 <- Will be Rule V eligible
Jonathan Hernandez (21-R): 12 GS, 3.43, 1.51 <- Will be Rule V eligible
Brett Martin (22-L): 15 GS, 4.88, 1.51 <- Will be Rule V eligible
As I stated, some of those could be stashed in the BP as a long-reliever for some teams. Jurado is probably the farthest from the Majors, but he probably has the highest ceiling, IMO.
Some of those guys would likely have been part of any trade deadline, had we been buyers.
