"High school sports in Texas can get pretty intense. Football is the No. 1 sport in the state, but baseball isn't too far behind. The kids get into it, their families get into it, and heck, neutral third parties get into it too. Sports are fun!

Sometimes it can go too far, however. During a recent playoff game, one of the umpires kicked dirt on home plate in an apparent attempt to get the runner to miss the plate following a home run. Had the runner missed the plate, he would have been called out"

Looked to me like the ump was just having some fun. His doing that was not going to change anything.

Damn I hate to agree with Keith. The kid hit a home run, there was no hurry. I would assume he knew the kid and was just playing. No one would be that stupid to blatantly mess with a game in full view of the crowd.

Is this another layer of sarcasm? I'm seriously starting to wonder at this point.

I wonder if the reporter that wrote the article had the initiative to get out of his chair to investigate what actually occurred.

I'll admit, I know little of the arcane rules of baseball. Are you really suggesting that the ump's actions affected the game?

Is there no joking, as well as no crying, in baseball?

I don't think that was "having some fun". The ump stood there after he kicked dirt on the plate and watched closely to make sure the runner touched home. As soon as the runner touched home plate the ump turned around. This was a playoff game so umpires and players having some fun seems inappropriate. Very weird and definitely need more info.

if that kid misses home plate, the pitcher steps off the rubber before the very next pitch, vocally calls for an appeal, tosses the ball home and the catcher steps on home and he's out, run does not count.

Whether or not the umpire was being a jackass or intentionally trying to fool the batter, it was a really stupid thing to do.

Before your edit, you mentioned that every kid over age 10 knows the rules. So it seems crazy to think that merely kicking dirt over home plate would confuse a kid who's probably been playing baseball seriously for nearly a decade. It's not like he can't see where the plate is, and will go wandering into left field looking for it. He could find it in his sleep.

And back to the rules, does the layer of dirt make a difference? I would have thought that crossing the geographic area of home plate is all that's needed. Does he really have to touch the actual base, not the layer of dirt on top?

Finally, I can't believe the umpire would be so stupid as to believe he could mess up the game by doing this. He's 20 feet from the coaches, players, fans, and obviously, a guy with an iPhone (who should be beaten for not going to horizontal format) Next, he's the 1st base ump. Isn't it up to home plate ump to make the calls? And what is he going to do, whisper to the opposing coach to protest?

I will fully agree with a previous poster. This is a playoff game. You really should not be playing around with any of the players, its just inappropriate. Even if it's your own nephew who you have a great rapport with, and who fully gets the joke.

I'd be interested to see what this guy thinks about it...

Looks like a future Ag.

Maybe the Ump was looking to make sure he touched it, because it was a gag, and he DIDN'T want the gag to blow up with him missing the plate.

Maybe the kid said something funny to the Ump as he passed 1st and the Ump responded back with "make sure you touch all of them" and then proceeded to kick dirt on the plate just to mess with the hitter.

Baseball is a funny sport and things are not always what they seem.

I've been umpiring for a long time and can't imagine that was malicious. Most likely an inside joke.

Common for another umpire to kick dirt on the plate, it's intended as a joke to make him have to brush it off. Happens all the time but you never notice, unless someone is filming.....

I'd feel like a real piece of s*** if I ever appealed whether or not a player stepped on the plate after a home run.

My bet is that it was a combination of an ump playing a joke + an overly serious parent video'ing and inferring the worst. The parents are consistently the worst part of youth sports these days, not the umps. Someone is always out to screw over their kid or their team. Mix in the fact that their team lost this series, and here is an easy target to take some misguided frustration out on.
