Good analysis.
Good pitching stops good hitting. Bad pitching...well, we all know what that brings, don't we?

I don't think this team isn't going to change much re: striking out too much...which is frustrating because it is the least productive out there is, short of hitting into a double play.

Hopefully McCullers can come back and not have any recurrences of his shoulder issues, and resemble a quality starter at the same time.

Saw where Max Stassi is also going to extended spring training soon...anything he can provide is better than what is being trotted out at C right now. He almost literally can't be worse than Kratz.

Good to see Mengden doing well, sucks we gave him up as part of the deal for Kazmir.

Almost every pitcher we have traded in the past year is killing it so far this season. Mengden, Hader, Eshelman, VV, and even Appel.

Now lets evaluate all the positive contributions from the returns we got on all of those trades

I'm as big of a pot banger as anyone, but nobody could have seen that coming, especially with Appel. Plus, sample size and all that.

There is also the fact that with a farm system as good as ours was/is, you can't keep everybody indefinitely. Some positions begin to stack up, some players need to go to avoid rule V, etc.

Yeah... But when you trade a bunch of starting pitchers and that is where we are struggling... It stings.

I'm fairly sure appel would still be struggling if we kept him. He needed a change of scenery.

I was watching Appel pitch on Saturday with his dad and he said the biggest differences between last year and this year... oh wait, y'all hate Appel. I don't want to get bashed for posting about him, so never mind!

Maybe

But remember when we traded for Kaz, we weren't worrying about losing Mengden because of who we had in line at SP with guys like VV and Appel... Now that trade looks like dog ****, especially since we gave up our best catching prospect as well.

The other two trades look pretty crappy right now.. But when we made the Giles trade, we assumed we were getting a flamethrowing closer who had a career 1.4 ERA. As far as the Gomez trade goes, remember that the Mets were willing to give up Zach Wheeler and Wilmer Flores for him.

Dan Straily has a 3.5 ERA this season with 12 innings pitched

None of the guys we traded for were going to help us this year except for maybe VV. Also none of them were prospects that you build a rotation around. I also don't think trading any of the pieces set us back at all. Yes...Even guys like Villar, Santana, and Phillips were expendable.

At some point you've got to push your chips in the middle and jam it.

Sucks none of them are working out yet but I'm not mad the moves were made.

***And don't forget everyone on here was screaming to deal Appel before it was too late.

What was that like a 7 or 8 pitch top of the first?

Seems to me Tyler is not seeing the ball very well. Lot of flinching at strikes, check swings, and getting fooled.

His swings aren't bad, but he's just not seeing the ball well.

Castro is currently 5 for 43. What are the odds he dips below .100 on this road trip? A couple of 0-4 nights would do it.

Gomez actually made a good swing and had solid contact, just short of a homerun. He has plenty of power when he swings under control, not sure why he feels he has to swing out of his helmet.
