Can't get a hit when it matters most. How fitting.

Just to recap, what would have happened just then if Gomez didn't steal?

Tucker sucks at hitting

We should definitely play Gattis at DH

Astros sink to 6-14.

if this continues, I wouldn't consider anyone's job safe in the management and coaching parts of the organization

Dear Carlos,

If an average fan like myself can predict you would attempt to steal 2nd base, don't you think a Major League Baseball team can predict it too? Even when you do something productive, like get a much needed hit in the 9th inning, you still manage to **** it up. Get your head out of your ass and start playing smart baseball.

Sincerely,

Average Fan

I don't think it'll continue. The stats say that it won't. But if we play .500 ball from here on out like we did for much of last year, what a waste of a season. The only good thing about if we continue to stay under .500 is that Luhnow won't send away any more prospects for wastes of space.

Why I think it is still too early to panic...

The Houston Astros' 2005 season was a season in which the Houston Astros qualified for the postseason for the second consecutive season. The Astros overcame a sluggish 1530 start to claim the wild card playoff spot, and would go on to win the National League pennant to advance to the World Series for the first time in franchise history.

yep, don't want Luhnow to get any ideas about trading away Bregman for help during the stretch run

Dear Luis Valbuena,

I can't wait to take your spot in the lineup as soon as our boy A.J. grows the kahunas to call me up and send your ass down to the minors. I'm hitting .322 and possess above average defense. I strikeout 27% of the time but as we both know, the 'Stros don't give a **** about that kind of stuff *lol*. Let's face it man, you suck. But hey, look at the bright side...Fresno has great weather this time of year!

Very Respectfully,

Colin Moran

P.S. Brad Peacock wears #18 and he said he's not giving it up to a scrub like you. His words, not mine.

I disagree, the problems with the rockets are far deeper than what the Astros are dealing with.

The Astros have to turn it around at some point, right? They're still hitting, just can't get em at the right time. Pitching has definitely showed some struggles, but when McCullers gets back, that should help a ton. I think this team gets it figured out pretty soon. Every baseball team hits a rough patch at some point in the season, and this team just happened to start on one

I hope you are correct.

The bullpen seems to be improving with guys getting more consistent solid outings (Fields and Sipp) or continuing solid seasons (Neshek, Devenski, Harris and Gregerson). Giles is really the only one with consistent bad outings. Hopefully Feliz will fair better than he did in his only other appearance this season.

The hitting seems to be picking up a little bit with Gattis and Gomez willing to hit the other way. Normally when guys do that, they seem to lock in and start heating up. One can hope. I would actually move them ahead of White for a little bit if he doesn't sit for a couple of games. Altuve is getting on well and Rasmus is hot. Springer /Correa are consistent, but nothing spectacular. Catcher remains a black hole.

The real issue is the starting pitching. Fister has 2 good five starter games in a row (6 IP, 2-3 runs), but the 3 guys ahead of him are pitching worse than five starters. Fiers, Feldman and McHugh have each only gone 6+ one time. Most starts are only 4-5 innings. You can't sustain that as the bullhorn will start to get worse. It doesn't get much better with Dallas as he has looked human this year.

I seriously can't wait until Carlos Gomez is off this roster. Night after night, it's the Gomez ****-show.

Take your pick of: 3+ K's, baserunning gaffes in crucial moments, and fielding errors

He needs to sit for a series. If for nothing else, Hinch needs to tell him to calm his tits.

Obviously, he's not the only issue. But he's an MLB veteran and supposed leader. Inexcusable for this **** to keep going on.

This goes back to why Preston Tucker doesn't get a fair shake at a regular spot in this lineup.

I've said all along Gomez is better than Marisnick, but I think we should give some serious thought into playing a Tucker, Rasmus, Springer OF.

Tucker has shown enough potential in his few ABs that combined with Gomez struggles justify giving him a shot. And I know of his trouble with lefties, but shlt Valbuena and Gomez get a regular spot and those MFers struggle with lefties and righties.

I just want to see what he can do in a regular role. Give him a series while Gomez sits and lets just see.
titanmaster_race

yes. Of anyone on the roster, Tucker deserves a shot at being an everyday player, at least for a couple of series in a row. He has really drawn the short straw in his major league career so far, and undeservedly so.

How many at bats does Tucker truly have against lefties? He's really never been given a chance. Hunch always pulls him in the 6th inning the second a lefty reliever comes in. Nevermind that the rest of the relievers on the roster are usually righties.

100% agree.

Correct

He has no ABs against Ls this year. Here are the splits last year

R (235 ABs) - .255 BA .314 OBP .494 SLG .807 OPS
L (65 ABs) - .200 BA .235 OBP .231 SLG .466 OPS

Again, I'm not trying to make the point that he doesn't struggle against Ls, but I think his overall numbers are better than some other players in the lineup and he deserves a chance.

.200 is a drastic improvement over some of the guys replacing him at the plate....

What is funny that in 2014 Tucker was better vs lefties than vs righties. Last year, his avg and on base % was similar, he just didn't have the power.

I expect the 'stros to play better, but with this bad start; they have to be considerably better going forward.

for example, if the team is to win 90 games...

gotta go 84-58 the remainder of the season --- that's 26 games over .500

I really don't care how many games we win as long as we win the division. Which, at this rate it doesn't look like it'll take too many.

As long as we're within single digits of the division lead I won't panic.

Observation...didn't last year's winning streak occur early in the schedule & BEFORE Correa was brought up from the minors? I wonder what our record is since he's been with the big team? BTW, I am NOT suggesting he is the problem. But it appears he hasn't been the solution, either.

Hinch seems more worried about his little stats and spreadsheets than he is the actual game at hand and who is hot.

Colby was scorching and he was still being benched when there was a lefty pitcher. That's inexcusable IMO.

If we don't turn it around by mid May, the bad news is that we probably piss away a golden opportunity and miss the playoffs with a pretty solid roster.

The silver lining is we might get a manager that has a spine and baseball savvy.

Can we discuss the decision to steal Gomez last night? Let's just assume for the sake of discussion that it was a coaching decision.

Do you agree? Why or why not?

I can see both sides of this one, but I only want to see a steal there is we are positive that he makes it, I.E. a spectacular read on the pitcher or a great jump.

I'm OK with it. Not ecstatic but I can see the reasoning.

Although in hindsight he probably would've scored form 1st, at the time the chances were pretty slim with who we had due up. Plus even if he's out being down by 1 you can still tie with one batter.

If we were down by 2 I'd be furious.

It was Gomez's decision. It's not the worst move to try and get in scoring position with one out... But he's barely been on base and that pitcher was very quick to the plate. With a guy like Valbuena up, I'd hate to not give him the opportunity to drive you in. He hasn't hit for power this year, but last year about 40% of his hits were for extra bases. I get it, and I don't get it.

If you look at the stats from last year it's the pitching that drove much of the success early last year.
Look at the comparison in ERA from April of last year vs April of this year:

2015 // 2016
Keuchel - .73 // 3.71
McHugh - 2.92 // 7.56
Feldman - 4.31 // 4.58
