I know its disheartening and agitating, but a couple weeks of baseball is almost nothing. Last year both Texas and Toronto were in last place on May 1 (Texas was 9 games back)

Personally, I think its time to try and find a third baseman. We know who Valbuena is at this point. Luckily we got a freight train of canidates about to come through AAA for that spot. Start trying to fix it now.

I also miss seeing Marisnick play center. The most frustrating part about Gomez is not what seems to bother everyone else, but the fact that if he isnt hitting and hitting for power, Marisnick is being wasted.

You're flat wrong about Marisnick.

He's batting .100 with an OPS of .200 with 0 HRs and RBIs.

I'm by no means defending Gomez, but as bad as he has been he's light years better than Marisnick.

Until Jake shows he can hit at even a AAA level he needs to be a strictly a pinch runner. Don't know what y'all see in him.

However I'm all for finding a 3B. Even maybe moving White there and letting Marwin play 1B.

Marisnick is not a good baseball player. Gomez as least has potential and somewhat of a track record.

Still sucks to know that Santana or Phillips or a handful of others in our system could have easily outperformed Gomez in his Astros career.

I have a short article coming out on crawfishboxes about this, but I figured I would go ahead and share with you guys.

Check out the Astros wRC+ in "High Leverage" situations. This is insane.

And to respond about Marisnick. Marisnick is just about one of the best 4th OFers in the league. Plus plus defense, plus arm, plus base runner/speed. He's serving his role perfectly so far. Gomez just needs to get it going, and I believe he will.

Got a question for the board.

Which one has the better year?

Gomez

or

Gattis

Damn good question.

I'd say Gattis. Hard to remember that Gattis didn't have a ST. He's still getting his legs under him and he'll come around.

That may be record breaking bad. That said, it actually makes me worry less. The law of averages applies more in baseball than in any other sport.

That's why I'm not freaking out yet.

We're in a position to win a lot of these games and we've had countless opportunities. Now if we had zero chances and completely stinking it up then I'd be concerned.

Eventually the hits will come and with that the runs will come with it. It'll even out

As much as I may pine for Marisnick's defense, it's unlikely that Gomez doesn't go the entire year as our centerfielder. Gattis, IMO, is at a point where they are really just trying to find ways to keep him on the team if he doesnt start hitting.

I have to believe this is going to even out at some point. I mean, .065 BABIP? That's awful but those balls have got to start falling in at some point right?

Depends on the definition of better. Gattis will likely be in better position in the batting order to get RBIs and runs. Granted, Gomez could work his way up in the order by producing.

Gomez had an awful Spring Training and it's spilled over into the season. Someone forgot to tell him that he's in a contract year. Or maybe that's why he's pressing so bad. Who knows, but there haven't been many positive signs from him.

Also, over the past eight games, Tyler White is 5 for 28 (.179) with 13 Ks. He's hit two home runs, but the magic has worn off quickly.

I feel like he is still having good ABs

I feel like lots of guys on the team have been having great at bats lately, with nothing to show for it. Just need a little luck to go our way.

We need some statistical regression in "high leverage" plate appearances.
iBrad

I don't think striking out in over 40% of his plate appearances during that stretch is good. He, and others, need to put the ball in play more, especially with runners on base.

Just because we're not scoring runs doesn't mean we're sucking.

Again were getting ourselves into VERY good positions to score and essentially win, but were just not getting the hits when it matters. We've only been completely over matched and out of it in very few of these loses.

When this team goes completely belly up and can't get men on then I'll freak out.

We may not be sucking all the time, but we are sucking when it matters most. And we're sucking in some very creative ways.

On a side note... Who can write this neat? Y'all should be lucky that I'm not the Astros manager. It would take a couple hours for y'all to decipher what I wrote.

I've done some thinking and become confident that our lineup will be fine. I think a lot of our struggles have been bad luck and the law of averages will kick in at some point. Not worried here.

I think our bullpen will be fine too. Giles and Gergerson in either order are a fantastic 8-9 duo. I think between Harris, Sipp, Devenski, and fields our bullpen is good enough.

Starting pitching is where I'm worried. Right now we have a number one, Keuchel. We have no number 2. McHugh is a number 3 at best, and Fister (with his 85 mph fastball), Fiers, and Feldman are all 4-5 starters at best. Yes McCullers will come back at some point but I just don't think his arm is physically major league ready. He will be on a pitch count for a LONG time and his control is shaky already.

We need another top tier pitcher to make a run at anything, and I don't know how we acquire one sooner than later

Harold Reynolds on MLB network taking about the lack of 2 strike approach by the Astros. Byrnes counters with the time he played for the same hitting coach and he wants you to take your "A" swing if it is a strike, regardless of the count.

Honestly though, I agree with this without runners in scoring position. But with 2 strikes and RISP with less than 2 outs, put the damn ball in play.
