It appears Jose Tabata of the Pirates leaned into the pitch. http://m.mlb.com/video/v182371383

quote:Wrong.
The rule in the MLB is different than in college. A player is not obligated to try and avoid the pitch like in college baseball, mainly because it can create a worse situation for a batter.
quote:At best, that should have been a dead ball, and he should not have been awarded first base.
The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first basewithout liability to be put out (provided he advances to and
touches first base) when:
(2) He is touched by a pitched ball which he is not attempting to hit unless (A) The ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, or (B) The batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball;

He is awesome.

MLB Rule 5.05(b):
quote:At best, that should have been a dead ball, and he should not have been awarded first base.
The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first basewithout liability to be put out (provided he advances to and
touches first base) when:
(2) He is touched by a pitched ball which he is not attempting to hit unless (A) The ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, or (B) The batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball;
At worst, he dropped his elbow, I think he moved into the ball, and that's bull****.
Yes, we were all taught how to get hit, but there is a difference between that, failing to avoid getting hit, and certainly moving into a ball so to get hit.

The fact that Biggio did it means dick to me. Sticking your arm covered in protective plastic out is a bush move.

Well, then thank the sports gods they don't enforce that stupidity.
quote:I don't recall saying that "every player" who uses it nurses injuries, or even any. I only said some of them do to protect against past injuries, although some wear protection against current injuries as well. Again, anyone who has ever played the game at any significant level understands the function of this equipment. We've all seen broken ankles, ribs, forearms, knees, and elbows in baseball. Some guys want to wear gear to protect those body parts? I'm fine with that. You don't like the fact that a guy leans into a pitch, then don't pitch him inside. It's that simple, really. You can't say that a pitcher can throw inside, but the batter can't get hit. It'd be a moronic double standard. It's easy to sit back and say what a guy should do as you watch a pitcher throw 90+ mph at someone, when you're not the one risking your body multiple times a game.
I already posted that any head protection is fine. But you are kidding yourself if you think every player that wear's a tricep/elbow guard is nursing an injury. Now go find another strawman.
And as mentioned, he didn't just not get out of the way, he put his padded arm in the way. it takes a real man to have such courage.
quote:
You seem to be missing the point here. The guy stuck his padded am in front of the ball on purpose. You don't get to gripe about potential injury if you create the potential for injury all on your own.
quote:
you want to lean in? take off your crappy elbow guard.
