It appears Jose Tabata of the Pirates leaned into the pitch. http://m.mlb.com/video/v182371383

On a sidenote, I'm not a fan of the armor these guys wear to the plate. Obviously, the head has to be protected, and I'm okay with the foot/shin-guards since they are for foulballs vs impacting a player's plate approach/strategy against the pitcher. But to armor up the rest of your body so you can stay in there on inside pitches is game-impacting BS IMO.

If you get hit on the armor, IMO, it should be a dead ball - No Pitch.

That was a terrible call. I don't know if those are reviewable, but the Ump should have called him out.

They should drill him in the ribs every at bat next game.

Yep. One brown, one blue. It's one of the most distinct differences I've ever seen.

After looking at it closely, I think he might have lowered the elbow to get hit, but if you pitch inside, you can't be surprised it you hit someone.

I hope he liked chocolate!

It's Bush league to lean into it that far. I don't have a problem leaning into a ball though.

You wanna lean into one? Here ya go. Earhole.
Jk. I'd probably just put one between the numbers.

Anyone who has ever played baseball at any kind of high level (high school and up) learns "how to get hit". Depending on the pitch and location, players are taught to be able take a hit. For example, breaking pitches that hit batters are usually those that stay up and don't break. They travel between high 60's and high 70's. A well trained batter is taught to turn his back and take the pitch in the back/thigh/butt area. Fastballs are trickier as they are faster and can be painful. You don't want to take those in the back. If you can take it in the meat of the arms or legs that's always preferable. The only time players really ever try to "get out of the way" are high pitches and low fastballs. Serious injuries happen when taking ankle and head/neck shots. In many situations, trying to get out of the way can result in injuries worse than if you just stand there and take it.

In reference to Tabata, his obligation is to get on base, not to make sure Nats fans get to see a perfect game. Lots of players wear the elbow guard. There isn't anything wrong with that. Many times it's due to a preceding injury to a body part somewhere in the player's past. A player trying to get out of the way is likely to create a worse situation for himself.

Agree. Dude is paid to get on base, not make sure someone gets a perfect game.

I guess Craig Biggio must be the most hated player ever because he was the epitome of doing whatever it took to get on base, many times sticking his body armor out to do so.

I don't care what the situation is. Stop complaining. Not bush league. Unwritten rules in baseball are the stupidest thing ever too.

The fact that Biggio did it means dick to me. Sticking your arm covered in protective plastic out is a bush move.

The rule in the MLB is different than in college. A player is not obligated to try and avoid the pitch like in college baseball, mainly because it can create a worse situation for a batter.
Wrong.

MLB Rule 5.05(b):

quote:
The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first basewithout liability to be put out (provided he advances to and
touches first base) when:

(2) He is touched by a pitched ball which he is not attempting to hit unless (A) The ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, or (B) The batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball;
At best, that should have been a dead ball, and he should not have been awarded first base.

At worst, he dropped his elbow, I think he moved into the ball, and that's bull****.

Yes, we were all taught how to get hit, but there is a difference between that, failing to avoid getting hit, and certainly moving into a ball so to get hit.

It's one thing to lean into a pitch to try to get on base.

It's a very different thing to lean into a pitch down 6 runs with 2 outs in the 9th inning in a game that's 1 strike away from being a perfect game.

Well, then thank the sports gods they don't enforce that stupidity.

Stanton's face guard must really annoy you. He should take pitches to the jaw like a real man!!

College made a point to enforce it this year, we'll see what MLB does.

Still, remember, people aren't mad because he didn't make an attempt to get out of the way. People are mad because he moved his elbow so he would get hit.

That's a horse**** move.

I already posted that any head protection is fine. But you are kidding yourself if you think every player that wear's a tricep/elbow guard is nursing an injury. Now go find another strawman.

And as mentioned, he didn't just not get out of the way, he put his padded arm in the way. it takes a real man to have such courage.

When did Biggio lean into pitch on last out of a perfect game?

Yes, the situation absolutely matters.

The point is guys like Biggio leaned into inside pitches ALL the time. I'm not a pro athlete but I can surmise that those that are don't want to be in record books for things like perfect games thrown against.

Probably the same crowd that thinks it's bush league to score on a passed ball when you're up by 8 in the last inning.

I don't recall saying that "every player" who uses it nurses injuries, or even any. I only said some of them do to protect against past injuries, although some wear protection against current injuries as well. Again, anyone who has ever played the game at any significant level understands the function of this equipment. We've all seen broken ankles, ribs, forearms, knees, and elbows in baseball. Some guys want to wear gear to protect those body parts? I'm fine with that. You don't like the fact that a guy leans into a pitch, then don't pitch him inside. It's that simple, really. You can't say that a pitcher can throw inside, but the batter can't get hit. It'd be a moronic double standard. It's easy to sit back and say what a guy should do as you watch a pitcher throw 90+ mph at someone, when you're not the one risking your body multiple times a game.

You seem to be missing the point here. The guy stuck his padded am in front of the ball on purpose. You don't get to gripe about potential injury if you create the potential for injury all on your own.

I could care less if his job is to get on base. I said that they should drill him in the ribs for doing it.
If the guy played on the Rangers, I'd say good job, game is never over.

No, I clearly address that. Don't want to hit the batter? Don't pitch inside.
