After a long offseason, and a great Spring Training, it's about that time, boys and girls. Here we go.

Couple of fun bets to go along with the festivities of claiming the title this year.

  • How many baseball jerseys does Smith&Co buy this year?
  • What is Summit's winning percentage at the Juice Box going to be this year?
My guesses:

  • 2
  • .375

New coach, some new faces, and some old faces. This is the year where the Astros break .500 and take home the trophy.

Some fun predictions:


  • Astros win the West, the pennant, and the WS.
  • Keuchel and McHugh co-win the Cy Young.
  • Spring wins MVP.
  • Hinch wins Manager of the Year.

Live in Dallas (unfortunately) and have tickets to each game over the first series up here, 4th row behind home plate, plus tickets to the Sunday game in Houston on April 19th vs LAA. Excited to go to 4 games in 9 days. Went to 3 all of last year and Astros went 3-0, so I'm feeling good.

Still no ROOT on suddenlink in CS, but even that can't stop me from being completely stoked for this year.

-Gattis, Carter, and Springer will finish 6th, 3rd, and 1st in the Major League homerun leaderboard.

-McHugh, Dallas K, Neshek, Springer, Altuve, and Castro all make the All-Star team

-Correa and Appel are both key components of our late season playoff push.

-Clinch the division on the last day of the regular season on a 12-inning Colby Rasmus homer

-Jed Lowrie completes a late inning rally in Game 7 with a 2 out bases clearing double, Gregerson puts the Cubbies down 1-2-3 in the 9th and George Springer is WS MVP

The future is bright and the future is now.

"The Padres have claimed hard-throwing right-hander Jandel Gustave off waivers from the Royals, reports Josh Vernier of 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City (Twitter link). Gustave had been with the Royals in camp after being selected from the Astros in this year's Rule 5 Draft, but Kansas City placed him on waivers earlier in the week."

The Reds announced that they've acquired veteran first baseman Dan Johnson from the Astros in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The 35-year-old had been with Houston on a minor league contract.

Should've taken the cash instead of letting his ego get in the way. It would be a lot better going through rehab with $5 mil in the bank. Tough lesson learned, I guess.

Agreed. The family and agent just kept saying that nothing was wrong with Brady and that he'd been checked out by several doctors. In a sense, that was true. He wasn't injured. What the Astros saw was a greater risk of injury, coupled with potential complications with surgery. The greater risk of injury has quickly come to fruition. Time will tell on the surgery.

I'm sure it's tough when you're the number one pick and the team that drafts you tells you that they think your career will never get off the ground due to arm issues and cuts your bonus in half. That has to rock your world. I can't blame the kid for not signing. When you have your sites set on playing in the majors, who's thinking about an insurance policy and getting millions in the bank in case of injury? Perhaps his parents and agent should have been a little more receptive to the medical reports instead of spouting off about their doctors saying nothing was wrong. Obviously, something was wrong.

Roster news:

Lefty specialist Joe Thatcher has been added to the Astros' 40-man roster, Rosenthal reports on Twitter. The Article XX(B) veteran will receive a $1MM salary and can add an additional $1.3MM through incentives. If he can return to form, Thatcher could be quite a nice addition to a Houston pen that was an area targeted heavily for upgrades this offseason.

Fellow non-roster invitee Roberto Hernandez will also make the club, the Astros have announced. As MLBTR originally reported, Hernandez will earn $2.65MM on the year. The 34-year-old joined the fold in Houston late in the spring, but provides a sturdy and versatile presence as the club seeks to take the next step this year.
