I'm shocked that Nomar stays on the ballot. Who thinks that Nomah is a Hall of Famer?
I don't but look at 98-00. That was a killer stretch. 97-03 was not too shabby either. Doesn't have the longevity or consistency or milestone numbers.

The "voters" who voted for Troy Percival, Aaron Boone, Tom Gordon and Darin Erstad should have their credentials revoked.

You know if you had asked me who was the better pitcher between Pedro and Randy Johnson I would have said Pedro.

But after seeing the vote, I went to look at RJ's numbers and holy crap, he was dominant for a very long time.

Pedro just didn't do it for a long enough time. His best few years are as good as anyone's.

Randy also stopped caring at the end of his time in Seattle. You can see a stupid improvement from when he was traded to the Astros.

Glad to see Biggio get in. I thought Piazza might as well but came up a bit short. Bagwell vote total surprised me a bit. I was not expecting it to remain stagnant. Maybe with the lack of 1st balloters next year his chances will improve.

Yes to all of the above.

Pedro's run with Boston was one of the greatest baseball has ever seen.

Johnson never, or rarely, quite that good, but he performed at a very high level, nonetheless, and did it for a long, long time.

Looking at next year, what kind of shot does Hoffman & Wagner have of getting in. #2 & #5 on the all time saves list. Hoffman is a 7x AS, top 6 in the Cy 4x, and a career ERA of 2.87. Wagner is a 7x AS, top 6 in CY 2x, and a career ERA of 2.31.

Wagner will probably get the same treatment as Lee Smith. I've heard some rumblings from people that the BWAA might not elect Hoffman in on the first ballot, or he will have a similar % of votes as Smoltz. But then again, those same people may have been the ones saying Pedro Martinez might not receive enough support to be a first ballot HOFer either.

Taking steroids out of the convo, he's got a .936 Career OPS, he's going to get to 500 homers most likely, and he's clutch as hell. Ortiz should be in. He was a huge factor in turning around the Red Sox. He's finished top 5 for the MVP several times.

Ortiz currently has a 43 WAR. 65 is about the low end for most players. Ortiz has a lower WAR and wRC+ than Edgar. They are both pretty much DH's (although Edgar played a decent 3B early in career). Edgar had 9 seasons over 5 WAR, Ortiz has had 3.

a couple of comments...

I always considered John Smoltz the best of the Maddux-Glavine-Smoltz trio. Outside of Bob Gibson, Smoltz is arguably the greatest post-WWII right-handed fastball-slider pitcher.

also has anyone ever wondered why Tom Seaver was the previous highest first ballot percentage Hall of Famer? Perhaps some east coast bias there
